I never had a GD, but my wife requested one. She loves it. Keeps her sink nice and clean without a lot of fuss. She is a homemaker, and uses it frequently. It was easy to install (once the old basket was removed). She has a KitchenAid Mixer that is about 25 years old and we have learned to trust the KitchenAid brand as quality products, so far we havent been let down.

I replaced a 6-yr old Insinkerator that had rusted a bit inside - once in a while a rust piece would break loose and make an awful noise. I am hoping that this disposal lasts longer and will not corrode inside. The outer construction is the same as the Insinkerator so it was easy to take out the old and put in this one. Was able to get the disposal switched out/installed in about an hour (not counting the time to go out and buy and install the new faucet itself! PS If you have ideas of replacing your faucet, this is the time to do it when you can get to all of the lines without the disposal in the way! Have your new faucet ready - also be sure to pick up plumber putty.

This unit replaces a noisy Badger 5 unit that came with my new house. Quieter than the Badger 5 unit, but since it is mounted in a Kohler stainless steel sink, there is still some vibration when running.

This disposer is pretty much the same as anything else with 1/2 hp. I bought it because it was the cheapest 1/2 hp I could find. It works fine, and being red it actually looks good under my sink. Then again, I just remodeled my entire kitchen and everyhting looks good in there now... ;)

ps- like most other installed kitchen appliances, this one does not come with a cord. If you are replacing an older unit you can likely take the cord off that one, but if not you'll have to get one at a hardware store.

I purchased this disposal to replace a Kenmore one that was less than 3 years old. The price I paid for the KitchenAid was about the same as the Kenmore three years ago. The installer was impressed with the durability of the unit, its efficiency and the ease of installation. He indicated that this product was excellent and a much better product than the one I was replacing. He was extremely impressed when I informed him of the purchase price. I priced ones with similiar speed and capacity at the big box retailer, they were all more expensive but could not compare with the quality of this KitchenAid unit. It is not the quietest unit but I am extremely pleased with its quality.

My plumber installed this garbage disposal in our remodel, so I can't speak to ease of installation. With everything else being top of the line in the kitchen, I should have gone for a more powerful and quieter garbage disposal. This 1/2 horsepower unit doesn't claim to be quiet, and it isn't. I've been in some houses where the garbage disposal just hums rather than grates; this isn't one of them. Besides the noise, however, I have no complaints. The price was amazing and it's Kitchenaid, so I expect it to last.

We have 4 kids and use our garbage disposal 5 out of seven days a week. If it will go down the opening, we'll try and grind it up! Lemon and lime halves, orange peels, potatoes, avocado skins, boiled chicken carcasses. . . . I don't care. Our last disposal was a Badger 5 (Insinkerator) 5/8 hp. It lasted ten years before the cast drain chamber rotted through enough to begin leaking. For that reason I was not inclined to go to a smaller, 1/2 hp Kitchen Aid. Sure, I own one of their mixers, but who'd ever heard of a Kitchen Aid garbage disposal? Long story short, I am 100% satisfied. As it turns out, this garbage disposal has to be made for Kitchen Aid by Insinkerator. The only thing that didn't exactly match the disposal I removed was the color, and its smaller overall size. Other than this, it is a duplicate of the Badger. Much quieter than the old unit I removed. Some lament that the water backs up. That's just because the rubber splash guard is so good. It acts kind of like a stopper. If you want the water to run down faster, rip out the rubber guard and let the food splash all over. Other than that, the sink inlet and drain outlet were the same diameter as my old Badger/Insinkerator.I'm very obsessive on purchases. If I have any doubt that I will be satisfied I don't buy it, or over buy just so I'm not disappointed. Unfortunately, I have a cheap streak too. This disposal was a compromise. The sole reason I bought it was the price.[$] Even though it's a 1/2 hp, I'm not doing anything different, and it's not dragging down. This disposal has it all over the Kenmore disposals i had before. One of the main reasons I purchased this disposer: it installs without removing and replacing the sink flange, IF you have a similar disposer already installed. It turns out that my old Emerson disposer appears to be exactly the same model as this KitchenAid, so installation was a breeze. If this one lasts as long as the old one (12+ years), I'll be happy. It's not as quiet as some of the elite models, but it's reasonably quiet and great for the money. Overall - a very good choice.

This is so much more quiet and doesn't take as much space as our old garbage disposal which was here when we purchased the house in 1996. We'v had it for 3 weeks. I hope this one lasts as long as the first one (that is 13 years + however long it was here before we bought the house --it was not new). We do not put meat, bones or fruit pits down our disposal, so perhaps we do not tax our appliance, but this one works as well as the old one using less horsepower. I installed this unit in a double-sink situation where there was not previously a disposer. A couple of PVC cuts, a new elbow and trap adapter, PVC cement and the installation was complete in less than an hour. In our limited use so far the disposer works great.

I shopped around and was pleased to find this 1/2 hp GE disposal available at ABT. Amazingly, this disposal came in at a price point right down there with the 'no name' made in china disposals, and yet is very solid, nice looking, quiet, easy to install - just what you'd expect from GE. I was on my way to pick up a third 'badger' unit from the big box stores, third in 10 years! A much less powerful 1/3 hp unit, at a much higher price, and obviously they do not last long. I am very pleased that I stepped back and looked around.

For the price, this little disposal is a great value. It's easy to install, and I didn't need any additional parts from the hardware store - I was able to reuse the hardware from the old disposal. Total install took about 45 minutes. Since I've only been using it for a couple weeks, I can't express an opinion on the durability. It's not particularly quiet, but it's not noisy, either - just depends on what you're shoving down it =) It's got enough power for our small-to-moderate sized kitchen, and does the job nicely! I have had nothing but a good experience with this disposal and I'm happy I bought it. BUT, the instructions were not particularly user-friendly, especially considering there were two black rubber circles among the contents that the instructions made no mention of at all! I got done installing the disposal and freaked out because those two things were left over, but after frantically re-reading the installation instructions I realized they didn't say WHAT to do with them. Weird... Plus, it was a bit of a chore to install, and you will probably need a second person to assist you. (I'm definitely NOT a handyman, though.)

As most others said, this Kitchen Aid disposal gets the job done. I had a professional install because there was no existing disposal, and it needed a dedicated circuit, etc., so I can't speak to the ease of installation, (it was easy breezy for the contractor). It's not overly "quiet", but how long do you run a disposal for anyway? 20 seconds? "Quiet" matters to me with a dishwasher, not a disposal. It's very sturdily built, grinds the food quickly, and I'm very happy with it. There's absolutely no reason to spend hundreds on a garbage disposal for general home use. A+++

I am disappointed by the capacity for the sink to drain water. Even when it is empty, the sink will back up slightly when poring our a large pot. Beyond that, it takes very little waste to back up the sink and force you to run the disposal. In retrospect I would install a larger disposal.

I had an old 1/3 HP Whirlaway under my sink and I didn't know how bad I had it. I am really glad it broke and I stumbled on to this KitchenAid. Install was easy, the hardest part was getting the old disposer out. I have tested it out on some pretty heavy vegetable peels and waste, grinds it all without any difficulty. Great bang for the buck.

I can't comment on performance since I rarely use the disposal and only installed it a week ago BUT, I can attest to the fact that for the price it is slightly more powerful than the competition and includes a sound shield (it is slightly quieter than my old one). Also, I replaced an In-Sink-Erator with this. It fit on the sink fiting exactly and my plumbing was adjustable enough to accomodate the slightly different dimensions. 1-1.5 hours to install.

I bought this disposal to replace a dispos-all unit with a bad bearing. Getting this unit out was the most time consuming part of the job. The old unit did not attach to the sink in the usual (standard) manner. The unit was probably installed before the sink was dropped in place which made it easy to install, but a pain to remove. But once the old unit was out, it didn't take long before the Kitchenaid unit was up and running.
Since the old drain assembly would not accept the Kitchenaid, I had to replace these parts as well. I thought that I was going to have to make a trip to the hardware store for some plumber's putty, but the unit came with gaskets for the new drain assembly.
There were some other posts that mentioned the need for a cable connector. if you are doing a new install, you will need to have this before you start. But if you are replacing a existing unit, then you should be able to use the cable connector from the old unit on the Kitchenaid unit.

This product is fantastic. We had a GE disposal that came with our new construction home. It lasted about 6 years but really has functioned poorly for the last 2 years. Reviews said this product was noise but It really is hard to notice the noise because you don't have to run it any amount of time for it to dispose of anything. In our subdivision trash cans have to be kept in our garage, therefore we dispose of any food trash in our disposal. This thing has handled everything and then some. We could not be happier?

This is the first disposal our 90 year old house has seen. We installed it when there was still no cabinet doors (lengthy remodel) and it is still pretty quiet! My husband is a new DIY and was able to install it no problem, even with a cord adapter we purchased at a "big box". We have pretty small cabinets and I am still able to store cleaning items under it as I was before we even had a disposal. Also, it doesn't hurt that it has a great visual design- I love looking at my drain that says "Kitchen Aid."

This was an exact duplicate/replacement of the same model bought 13 years ago, which was leaking from the bottom of the disposal. I was able to install without much trouble. I did have to purchase the power cord separate. The unit seems to work well but sometimes it is louder than other times depending on how the metal cutters are positioned when it turns on. It can make you think there is something in there but there is not. Overall it seems like a quality unit and is powerful enough for my needs.

I would recommend this product over the leading name brand. I used to have a an In-Sink-Erator and this one definitely beats it. It's wider and shorter in comparison to their models, which are skinnier and taller...and it's not as noisy as I had anticipated. Can't beat the price either.

This was a replacement of the exact same model. The problem with the old unit was a hole in the case that is not repairable. If the case was made of a more durable material (not plastic), I would not be writing this now. The installation was made easier by replacing the same model. The only thing that caused the new unit to be a little quieter was an added piece of plastic around the case. It works as well as the old one and it will probably last as long as the case because if you ever get a hole in it, even though the electric motor and moving parts are still good, the unit will have to be replaced. Good price and since the old lasted 14 years, I think it was worth the money.

I have a 4 person family. The product was recommended because of the limited amount of space under my sink. It installed easily and is quiet compared to the 3/4 HP Kenmore that I had. I've only had it for 3 weeks, so I can't testify to the reliability of the product, but it's worked great so far, and I now have plenty of space in the cabinet underneath the sink to store more items than previously.

Makes you wonder why anyone would want to spend more for a disposal. One thing many of us forget is we're not doing waste treatment plants any favors by throwing food scraps into the sink. Pull them out and send them to the landfill (compost)!! Should only be a modest amount going down the drain and this unit handles it well.

Overall, I like this disposal a lot. In over 30 years of homeownership, I've always installed KitchenAid disposals in the several homes I've owned. Installation was simple; the disposal is powerful, yet quiet; BUT there are two parts that you MAY need before finishing the installation:(1) A 3/8" "cable connector" for the bottom of the disposal. It's a mystery to me why this 25 cent part was not included in the box because you need it to complete a safe installation of the electrical cord. (2) A different-sized "discharge tube." I was replacing a larger 3/4 HP KitchenAid disposal with this one. The distance between the old disposal and the original pipe was shorter than with the new disposal. As a result, I needed to purchase a longer discharge tube to complete the installation.I would recommend having these two items on hand BEFORE you begin your installation. Otherwise, you'll have to make an extra trip (like I did) to either [...] before you can finish the job.

This was to replace an insinkerator that I had had for 3 or 4 years and began leaking. Once I opened up the box i realized that this appeared to be exactly the same model as the one I was replacing. They appear to be made by same company. That made installation a breeze as I didn't even neet to change drain. Seems to work ok, a little loud like the old one.

Mounting plate must have alignment screws perfectly equal. Spent frustrating hour and had to have service tech install it. Never had this much installation problem with other units.

Shorter than the Badger that I removed, gave me a bit more space under the sink. Went in very easily. It fit into the same slot as the other disposal, but I replaced that sink insert part just because it was new. Seems to eat everything that I feed it. The KitchenAid is made by Whirlpool, so you might be able to buy a slightly less expensive model. This one is a replacement for my original Insinkerator disposal and it was a breeze to install. It took all of about a half hour to take the old unit out and put the new one on. The most time spent was knocking out the plug for the dishwasher connection (DON'T forget to do this if you have a dishwasher), and hooking up the electrical connection. Cheapest name brand quality 1/2 HP disposal I could find. It's a decent replacement to the 1/3 HP Badger that stopped working.

Installation is fairly easy. Powerful and tough, it handles a normal load of food waste well. For the price, it really is an an incredible value. 1/2 HP is about as low as you should go for a disposal, and I find that in my small household, it is more than enough to handle what we throw at it.

A little noisy, but not noisier than your average disposal. I can't fit my hand into it to fish out small things that accidentally slip into the grinding chamber, but that's probably a good thing anyway. I just use a pair of tongs to retrieve small measuring spoons or other things that fall in there.

I definitely would recommend this to anyone. I really love mine!
