You must shut off the water in order to relieve the pressure so you can unscrew the filter. Otherwise, the pressure keeps it too tight.
I like this filter system. It filters the water to for our regular sink water and our instant-boiling tap. We use the filtered water to make a pot of coffee every morning and so we are using a filter every six months or so. At around $100 each, that can add up.

The Franke brand (which these are) seem to last longer than the non-franke aftermarket filters offerred by others. I tried a couple of the others and they didn't last very long. And I read the same thing on the web.

Our family can't afford a whole-house filtration system, but using the Franke Little Butler and its filter @ the kitchen sink is the next best thing.

The first Franke filter replacement I bought was an after-market product. The flow was terrible, even slower than normal, and the filter didn't last more than four months before becoming unusable because of the slow flow. I think I saved $20, with shipping, on the non Franke filter.
The Franke filter is by far better. It was clear just opening the box and seeing the product. The flow is so much better.

Having been on the Grand Canyon and drinking the river through a ceramic cartridge, I trust and love this filter and faucet. Very convenient to have filtered water for coffee and drinking right from the faucet.
