Comments about TomTom TomTom ONE XL-S Car GPS Navigation System:

The Tom Tom XLS was kind of confusing at first, it took time to figure out how to use all of the features. At first it would not say the street names. Little did we know you had to pick that feature in a check list. Otherwise, we do use it a lot. It has helped us get home several times. I do recommend using the Tom Tom XLS, however, I would recommend playing with the features before driving to a new place and getting lost because you dont know how to use it :)

Comments about TomTom TomTom ONE XL-S Car GPS Navigation System:

After using the product for about 3 weeks now, I'd have to say that a few of my favorite functions are the acquiring of GPS satellites indoors, traffic re-routing, and of course MapShare. The SiRF III chipset used by TomTom locks in on the weakest satellite signals (even indoors) and does it very quickly when used with QuickGPS. When connected via a phone to the internet via Bluetooth DUN, there was no problem activating TomTom Plus services. My favorite is the traffic updates. It has a feature that automatically will re-route you around any jams. I just wish that the US had the traffic high-def service that TomTom has in Europe. With the MapShare capability, you have the option to import/export changes to the map that you or others have made. This is nice given that you have complete control over which updates you trust (from TomTom, from TomTom buddies you trust, from changes made by many users, or changes made by only a few if desired). This gives you the ability to rename roads, mark a road as closed, even change the direction of traffic flow during construction. It also lets you update points of interest. The main difference between the ONE XL and ONE XL S is the text to speech capability. Keep in mind that this works only with the computer voices (You can use the other Tom Tom voices, but lose the text to speech capability). Another problem that I saw was that you cannot use both the internal and SD memory cards at the same time. I had a 512 mb SD card laying around and thought that I'd load all the voices and points of interest on the SD card, until I realized that the unit would not boot without the TomTom app and maps loaded on it as well. This means that you'll need something larger than a 1gb SD card if you want to use that slot. All in all a nice product, but battery life is very short. Plan on eating up one of your power ports in the car.

This was a Christmas gift for our daughter. She was able to install it quickly and easily. We tested it the next day by traveling to a known address. The instructions are clear and prepare you well in advance for turns and exits.

Unit did everything I expected and more. Text to speech was a great add-on and trip planning was easy. I should add that a case for the unit should be included in the price. But, it performed and functioned as promised.

Comments about TomTom TomTom ONE XL-S Car GPS Navigation System:

I used TomTom on my phone for over two years (Treo with PalmOS and bluetooth gps) and it was always the best - still is. Getting the dedicated car gps after reading reviews and customer feedback led me to stick with TomTom GPS. I recommend the One series personally (520 or 720) since they have a faster processor and more ram (reduces time the device takes to plan your route or finding a new route for when you miss an exit - seconds count here). I choose this the SL-S over the XL since it has twice the memory and Speaks the street names (however, not when you choose a human voice since those are recorded and you can't record someone saying every single street name in the country).

Battery life is good, screen size is good too...the physical device is strong built and slim which is awesome for taking it with you (like camping or bike riding). I mentioned the One series above (namely the 520 or 720) but they are the bulky ones, but better overall (faster processor) when you want the best car gps - choose based on your needs.

Best advice for those looking to buy a gps is don't go cheap with those $100 gps, when you're lost it's at that point when you know paying less is worthless...and paying more for better, updated correct maps and easy interface with your device was worth it. Also, with TomTom updating the maps in a year or two is easy..at least it was when I used my phone - and the map is what makes a direction right or wrong. Highly recommend.

Fast delivery, received it in a few days. Very happy with Abt and would buy again from.

Comments about TomTom TomTom ONE XL-S Car GPS Navigation System:

I purchased this item for my Father for Christmas day and I have opened it to get the home location set and to rename some of the local roads around their (very) rural home to the correct street names. This process was very simple, and they now report accurately. I purchased this unit specifically for the text-to-speech capability and because I have been a tomtom user myself for about 3 years and my dad always liked mine. I like this unit so much I am considering upgrading my old tomtom palm solution to this.

Service & Delivery comments:

This was my first time ordering from Abt electronics, and it was very pleasurable. The unit was ordered on a Saturday, it was reported as being packaged on a Sunday, and I arrived the item on Wednesday. The item was also the same price without rebate as all other online stores was after rebate. I appreciated this a lot as rebates our time consuming to fill out, and take a long time to arrive. I will certainly be checking Abt before purchasing consumer electronics.
