This was a gift for my girlfriend, who is in film development, to use for cutaways, insert and establishing shots on projects. She did a LOT of research on HD camcorders and this was the one she chose. We never owned a camcorder before so we're still getting used to all the features, but so far the Pros outweight any cons.
PROS: Lots of features found on much more expensive camcorders. Easy to hold in your hand. Great zoom feature that's easy to work.
This camera also takes great looking still photos AND you can create stills from video you take! Battery lasts from 74-110 minutes, which is a solid battery life.
CONS: Sound could be a bit better, but they do say external microphones can be used; same for light- you can buy an external light (or light wi/flash if using for photos).

Suggestion: invest in a Canon battery - we bought another brand and the camera would not recognize it. They're not cheap but you'll want one just in case because it takes awhile to recharge the battry.

This HD Camcorder/Digital Camera really rocks! My 30 year old 35mm camera finally died. I wanted to switch to a HD camcorder that also had high quality digital photo capability. This baby handles everything with fantastic results. The HD video is beyond belief, and that's from someone coming from a quality Canon Mini-DV camcorder. My child has Band competitions, and this HD camcorder nailed every situation perfectly - it didn't matter if it was outdoor cloudy, indoor gym lighting or sunny days. I simply selected the pre-programmed mode for each situation, and the video came out looking fantastic. Now, about the digital camera function. I really hesitated because of the 3.3 mp digital camera capability. I ended up doing a ton of research about the megapixel hype/myth. Found out that anymore than 5 mp for the most part is a waste of megapixels and money for the average photographer. Too many megapixles can actually degrade photos. I eventually researched that a high-quality 3.3 mp camera like this coupled with Canon's high-quality optics/processing features should allow you to enlarge photos up to 11"x14". So far, the photos, like the HD video, are also amazing. Check-out the web about the great "megapixel myth" and you'll feel very comfortable with the HF200 for digital photo and HD video use. The sound is also very, very good. Don't wait, run out now, and buy the HF-200 asap, especially before the upcoming Holiday memories slip away. I'm sure glad I did. You will too.

Fast action {football} suffers from jittery/jerky image flow. Could the stabilization be adding to the problem?
For indoor and nature, the quality is astounding, comparing to the best commercial BluRay as delivered to the big 53" at full 1080!

Spent weeks researching and decided on this model which uses the SDHC card memory. Best value for the price. Great camera for the user who wants crystal clear HD w/o breaking the bank. Picture is incredible. Super range OIS is second to none. Used for sports and family videos since I bought it 2 months ago. One of the best electonics purchases I've ever made.

Great camera. Would be nice if the lens was a little wider. For normal use in the house during the day it could have benefited from a little more light, but overall still ok. At night in the house you will want to turn on all the lights or get an external light like the VL-5 Video Light.

Very good quality HD recording under most conditions. Indoor low light shooting is somewhat noisy, but that's expected, and much better than originally thought.

Standard battery lasts less than 2 hours, which is OK for most cases (16G card can only last that long under high quality setting), but you may want to have a spare higher capacity battery for extended outside shooting.

Very easy to use. Start recording right out of the box. The picture quality is amazing on a HD TV. Zoom is great, and there is hardly any camera shake due to the optical stabilization. The only downside is this camera records files in .mts format. This will not work natively within Vista or XP. You will be required to use the software that came with the camera to view and save files. Windows 7 does support this file format in Windows media player, media center, and streams to my xbox with no conversions. My advice would be to get windows 7 to simplify things.

I love the picture this cam provides and it fits the hand really well. I haven't had issues with image stability. I was fortunate to get this when it first came out on Abt for [$]. Don't think you'll find a better HD cam for the price. Looking forward to using it on a trip to Alaska in June.

I carry mine in a 6 inch camera lens case with extra battery & memory. I use my camera for travel, family events, nature, and a varity of events! It is compact but it does the job...and if you want to switch back & forth between camcorder and camera, it can be done with ease! I honestly can't think of anything I can say negative about it!
I might add....ABT is one of the best websites I have ever delt with! They are honest, fast to ship, and the communications with them are exceptional!!! Would I buy from them again? I already did, I bought a Panosonic DMP BD80 Blueray DVD player and again a pleasant online experience! WAY TO GO ABT!!!

Very Compact and nice to carry on Vacation,etc. I bought a 6 inch padded lens case with a belt loop that I can put the camcorder in and carry it with me...handy and easily accessable. I have taken a few HD movies and I am very impressed with the ease of use and quality of the movies! The owner's Manual provides much info and once you have spent a few hours reading it, you can choose the important features that you will be using & learn them well. It also takes some decent still photos as well. (3.3mb) So as an all-in-one Camcorder/Camera I rate it 5 stars!I might add, ABT is a great place to purchase anything!!
