United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to Honor Abt Family on October 19
Alice and the late Robert Abt,along with their family, will be honored by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM)with the Museum’s National Leadership Award on October 19 at Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Tower at the 20th anniversary of the “What You Do Matters” Risa K. Lambert Chicago Luncheon.
The Abt family, who built Abt Electronics in 1936 from the ground-up to the largest independent, single-store retailer of electronics and appliances in the country, will be celebrated at the event for their deep belief in the need for a national Holocaust museum before one existed, dedication to the museum while supporting its education and fundraising efforts, and passing their commitment on to their children and grandchildren.
Jordan Abt, granddaughter of Alice and Robert Abt and the museum’s Teen Committee co-chair, will accept the award on behalf of the family and will launch a national social media campaign, #SafeguardTheirStories, with co-chair Angela Gutman.
The campaign, which aims to help safeguard the stories of Holocaust victims and survivors, hopes to raise more than $75,000. The proceeds will go to the construction of the David and FelaShapell Family Collections and Conservation Center, which will preserve the history of the Holocaust for future generations.
