Whirlpool Whispure Air Purifier, Model AP510

Who needs Whispure?
The fact is, your family may inhale dust, smoke, pollen and a host of other particles every day. What's more, indoor air levels of many pollutants may be two to five times higher than outdoor levels, according to the EPA. And today's families spend nearly 90% of their lives indoors.

What can you do about it? Clear the air, with the Whispure™ Air Purifier. It's the quietest high efficiency air purifier you can buy.

Breathe easy. Here's the nasty stuff that Whispure inhales for you.
If you suffer from allergies or asthma, you want your home's air to be as clean as possible. That's why you'll be pleased to learn that the Whispure™ Air Purifier uses an exclusive Filtrete™ True HEPA Filter from 3M. It captures 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns from air passing through the filter.* Exactly how small is that? 1,100,000,000 would fit in an area less than a square inch. Which is bad news for dust, pollen and smoke. And very good news for all of us.

Pleasant dreams with peace and quiet.
You need an air purifier that keeps working, even while your family sleeps. And that's the Whispure™ Air Purifier. It filters more air with less sound.

The inside story on Whispure:

  • Whispure has the power to inhale microscopic airborne particles like dust, pollen, pet dander and smoke.
  • Once air is inside Whispure, the 3M Charcoal Pre-Filter pre-cleans it, to reduce odors and filter out large particles.
  • Next, the exclusive Filtrete™ True HEPA Filter from 3M captures 99.97% of airborne particles as small as 0.3 microns from passing air through the filter.
  • Finally, Whispure circulates filtered air back into your home. And it filters a roomful of air in just 10 minutes, which maintains the recommended 6 Air Changes per Hour (ACH).

You're in complete control.
Whispure has three fan speeds to fit your needs. You simply turn it on, adjust the speed, and Whispure does the rest. It's that easy to clear the air.

A change for the better.
The two-stage filter system inside Whispure keeps going strong for a long time. But how do you know when it's time to change filters? Just glance at the indicator lights. You can even register on-line to have replacement filters sent directly to your home, precisely when you need them. Keeping your home's air clear simply doesn't get any easier.

Which one uses the most energy?
The Whispure™ Air Purifier swallows plenty of dust, pollen and smoke, but it never consumes a lot of energy. The truth is, the Whispure Air Purifier uses approximately the same wattage as an ordinary light bulb.

Whispure works behind the scenes.
Where's Whispure? Chances are, it's hidden away against a wall or even in a corner. But rest assured, Whispure is still cleaning the air. That's because it uses front to top airflow, so you can put your Whispure wherever you need it most. And there's a Whispure model for every room in your home.

Effective & efficient design. Very quiet, even at "Turbo" speed. Timer settings and lock function are great additions for those with children. A little large if you are planning on putting it in a bedroom or narrower hallways. As is advertised, it is great for living rooms/open areas.

I am allergic to dust, dust mites, and tree mold and use this product in my bedroom. The quality of the air has improved greatly. I replaced a more expensive Sharper Image device that did not work properly. I checked with Consumers Reports who recommended a smaller older model and this was price competitive. I am very happy with my choice!!!

This is the fourth Whispure that I have purchased. I have them all over my home. After trying two other competators (with the devices being fairly equal) the Whispure is the quietest, easiest to use, most attractive, and does the best job. With multiple pets in the home, the debris they create *could* be a problem, but thanks to this product, it is not. We also have an asthmatic human in our home, whose breathing problems have all but vanished. I dust my furniture about 75% less often than I used to, and allergy season comes and goes without my notice. I no longer need to use nasal allergy medication. My units run 24/7. I really cant imagine going back to living without them. The only real negative is the cost of replacing the HEPA filter, Pre-filter 4-packs are inexpensive, but the HEPA filter is costly.

My daughter (age 11) has asthma. Unfortunately we have several pets that don't help the situation. We use 3M Filtrete (1750 rating) for our 2 central air units, which helps air quality. We've since added the Whirlpool Whispure units to her bedroom and a couple common living areas (AP510 in living and AP250 in bedroom). In just a few days the air quality was consistently cleaner and after a few weeks the amount of dust in our home was significantly reduced. We're very satisfied. The only downside is when running the unit on the highest level the noise can be high. However, we do that usually for a short period and then turn it down to the lowest setting, at which point the Whispure label is justified.

I love this model, it works even better than it's predecessor the AP450. Between my AP450 and AP510, I am filtering 1100 sq.ft. of the upstairs of my house. Before I had to dust at least every 1-2 weeks, now about every 6-8 weeks. When my dog and cat play together and shake their fur and dander, this thing just pulls it all right into the filter. If it is in the air, the AP510 will filter it out. It is well worth the money, considering how well it performs. Other air purifiers make false claims or will not effectivly filter the air. I did the research before I made my choice, and found out some disturbing information about some of the other brands of purifiers. The only thing I don't like, is the filter replacemint cost. I blow out the filters with an air hose every month, but you will still need to replace the HEPA filter once a year and the pre-filter 2-3 times a year. That may or may not be the recommened replacement intervals, but that is the way I do it. Bottom line is, true HEPA technology is the way to go.

I smoke, I have pets, I work too much and don't have time to dust regularly. So, in speaking with a friend of mine, it was recommended that I purchase an air purifier to help keep the air in my home clean. I checked Consumer Reports and found their recommendation was this product for my large basement area and Abt Electronics had the item in stock and at the very best retail price I could find.[...] The instructions were simple, the features were simple and the process was almost effortless!Within hours, my smoky basement was clear and smelling fresh and clean. I cleaned the floors and within a couple of days, the amount of pet hair loose on the floor was minimal.I've run the unit 24 hours a day since it has arrived and have had no failures or changes in the status of the filters. This product appears not only easy to use, but easy to maintain and easy to fall in love with.I highly recommend the Whispure AP510 by Whirlpool to anyone searching for a room air cleaner.

Pros: Attractive Design, User friendly, Quiet
Cons: Large
Best Uses: Living Room, Larger Rooms, Asthma Control
Primary use: Personal
Describe Yourself: Quality Oriented
This is a great product - it's very quiet and seems to make the dust level less. My husband and I sneeze a lot less in the 2 rooms that this air filter works in. It makes the room that it's in quite cold, so put in a far away place from where you will be spending time. Although it is large, it seems efficient and has a slim-ish design that could be used next to a couch or next to a buffet. Probably too big/powerful for a bedroom - it would probably dry it out and make it way too cold.

I did quite a lot of research on these air purifiers. I found the Whirlpool in my price range with excellent reviews compared to the units that were much more expensive. I am a very light smoker living in a co-op (900 sq ft). I have two cats and a dog. I bought the purifier more for them then myself. I keep it on the lowest speed when I am home and you would never know I smoked. The only reason why I did not give it 5 stars was because it really is not that quiet on the higher speeds.

Pros: air IS cleaner
Best Uses: Bedroom
Cons: cheap parts, Expensive

Describe Yourself: Quality Oriented
Yes, it Does...clean the bedroom air. not too loud. Only real complaint: initial start-up...fan was wobbley. opended it up and found that the mounting tabs were broken (ALL press fit PLASTIC). yet, there are holes for bolts/screws. put in my own and now works like it should. so.. for the price, cheap construction, parts. but, then again, what is made well, anymore? it does work.

Describe Yourself: Quality Oriented
Pros: Quiet, Attractive Design, User friendly, Lightweight, Slim Footprint
We use this in our living room and I am very happy with it. It moves a LOT of air and you don't realize this because it is pretty quiet at most speeds. It is large, but that is to be expected for a large room filter. Nice and shallow - front to back so you can tuck it in places pretty easy. Fairly light also.

I use this product in my boy's bedroom. We recently found out that our oldest kiddo is allergic to our 15 year old cat. We hoped this would cut down on dander and other allergens in the air. So far this has helped a great deal. We haven't had any new allergy issues or infections. It is quiet and very easy to use. I can't speak to the life of the filters, but running day and night it is still registering as a new filter after three weeks.

I bought two AP510's [...]10 months ago. I haven't changed any filters yet, but vacuumed the pre-filter a week ago. Immediately afterwards we had the 2007 fires in San Diego county which filled the air outside with smoke for several days. We ran both units on high for much of the time in a 2400 sq ft house and they effectively removed all the smoke smell. Our neighbor's houses smelled like smoke, even though they kept their windows closed (but they didn't have air purifiers). Very happy with the Whispure 510s. I've attached a photo of the approaching smoke; successive days had diffuse smoke everyone (but not as thick as the photo suggests).

I all ready have the 450 and was happy with it and needed a second airfilter to do the rest of our small house, so I bought the 510. I was pleasantly supprised it has a little more air flow, and is slightly more quite in the turbo setting than when the 450 is on high, and uses 105 watts instead of 115 watts. The sound and wattage difference must be just better motor bearings because when you shut it off it spins way longer than the 450. Though it cost a little more I would buy the 510 over the 450 again.

I ran this for 24 hours and then looked at my air in the sun streaming in the windows and it was 100 times cleaner than the day before, the amount of dust and pet hair floating around was so reduced I couldn't believe it. I bring it to my bedroom at night on the "sleep mode" it circulates the air I wake up much less congested and my room doesn't smell like "pets" even though a 2 dogs and a cat sleep in there too !

I've had this air purifier for about 6 months now. Before purchasing this item I would wake up regularly with sinus problems. Now I wake up without sinus problems on a regular basis. I'm ordering a second one today to give to my daughter for the baby's room. It's a little louder than I expected, but not enough to keep me awake at night.

Pros: Quiet, Attractive Design
I did quite a bit of research on air purifiers and opted for this model based on other positive reviews, performance, and cost compared to other models. The design is decent and unobtrusive. It certainly is relatively quiet ... it runs on highest setting 24/7 and it's just humming white noise. I've had it for ~6 weeks now. I also bought a Vornado AQS35 at same time, and it is significantly louder than the Whispure 510. I don't really have allergy issues, but I was really just wanting to reduce dust. I keep it in my main living area, near the center of the room, which is a relatively small "great room" open into kitchen, hall, & stairs with vaulted ceilings. However, the size of the room is still within prescribed range for this unit. I also have hardwood flooring, so dust bunnies are a problem. Based on previous rave reviews, I was expecting to seriously reduce, nearly-eliminate dust issues. While there has been a noticeable reduction in overall dust on surfaces and floating through the air, I still have a pretty significant problem with dust settling, even within close proximity of the unit. If fact, dust and fluff gather around the unit. Within the first month, the prefilter did become quite covered in dust and such. I ended up cleaning it off with vacuum as I had not yet bought replacement prefilters (and I certainly wasn't going to start replacing them on a monthly basis). So, clearly, the unit is working and doing a fair job of cleaning the air. The controls are simple. The 'control lock' feature is a bonus. I don't think the 'filter status' lights are actual reflections of how clean or dirty the filters are, but rather just a sort of long-term timer to tell you that you need to buy more filters from them. So, overall, I do not regret purchasing the Whispure 510 and am glad for the cleaning it does do, but it certainly is not the miracle worker I had hoped it would be. I don't really see now how any such air purifier could actually get all the air throughout a room to come to it. Clearly, some dust will escape its pull. But, I'm guessing that this unit does do a better job than a lot of its competitors. Perhaps it would do a more thorough job in a more confined room. If you are in the market for a moderately affordable air cleaner with the best performance possible, I would recommend the Whispure 510 (certainly more so than my Vornado AQS35). However, buyer beware, don't expect miracles.

effective room air cleaner
By RJ from Phila., PA on 04/2/2007.
Best Uses: Bedroom, Office
Cons: Expensive
Pros: It works
Describe Yourself: Professional
My air bourne allergies seem to have diminished with the use of the AP510 air cleaner. Smells from an office kitchen around the corner have diminished, too. Noise does not annoy and seems to act favorably as white noise in an office setting. The downside seems to be the price where the unit approaches $[...], the Hepa replacement filter will approach $[...] along with a necessary and relatively inexpensive prefilter. The question is, would another unit with a less expensive (eg Honeywell or other)filter work almost as well in the setting? The unit is simple and not elegant with a plastic box containing two filters and a fan, electronic controls (that work well) and foam for sound insulation.

The Whispure air purifier has certainly met my initial expectations. A longtime allergy sufferer, I was waking up almost daily with a sinus pressure headache and decided to try an aircleaner in the bedroom. After some online research I decided on the Whispure 510 [...] Product arrived quickly and ready to plug in and use. I noticed a difference right away and have had only 2-3 headaches now in the first 3 weeks of use. Cant comment on filter or pre-filter life yet but Im happy with the effectiveness of this purchase. Unit is not silent but the fan noise is not a problem at all for my wife or I on low or medium settings. I've also slept with it on the high setting with no problem (~3 feet away). Bottom line: works for me - wish I'd have purchased sooner.

By Dust-Hater from Los Angeles, CA on 01/29/2007.
Cons: Kinda big
Best Uses: Office
Pros: Quiet, Inexpensive, Attractive Design
Purchased unit after reading lots of air purifier reviews. Definitely runs quiet, in fact the sound is relaxing, even on high. Have had it for 3 weeks and it looks like there is less dust on surfaces, which is why I bought it. Only negative is that the unit itself is larger than I expected, but I found a place for it where it's not obtrusive. Still too new to see if the filter replacement costs become costly, also hoping the motor doesn't burn up as I keep it on 24x7.

Pros: Efficient, Quiet
Best Uses: Home
Cons: None so far
I have not purchased an air purifier before so I don't have any personal experience with them prior to this puchase; however, after researching reviews I was drawn to this model. It's brother the AP450 was one of the highest rated purifiers per Consumer Reports I believe. It is fairly quiet. Its technology is simple and it utilizes tried and true HEPA filters and the design seems effective. It appears to be a great product that does what it is supposed to do, without a lot of fuss or flash. A good step to take more control of what is going into your lungs--especially in Los Angeles and New York. I highly recommend this product to that end.

Great Air Movement! Great Value!
By Breathin' EZ from Berlin, NJ on 01/28/2007.
Best Uses: Home, Large Living Areas
Pros: Inexpensive, Quiet
This Air Purifier can really move air! It's unique design and turbo setting allow this unit to push a lot of air straight up from the top of the unit (the air doesn't blow across at you) which will create a lot of air flow. This allows more air to be filtered by the unit faster than conventional units. I have a 112 story living room (280 sq ft) where I run the unit by a wall, that is overlooked by a dining room-kitchen area (325 sq ft). I have 2 cats and was used to seeing fur floating around the kitchen dining area. Not anymore!! My wife has allergies and has shown improvement in her reactions since we purchased this Whirlpool unit. Also, you may want to know that moving so much air (turbo setting) can be a bit chilly in the winter time (northeast US) but should be nice in the warmer weather. This unit is inexpensive compared to others in this class and was rated very highly by Consumer's Report.

Some people thought this product was somewhat loud but my dad had it in his living room and I was sitting right by it. On medium you could barely hear it over the TV. I think it's amazing. I used to leave my dad's smelling like smoke even though he smokes by the fan in the kitchen. After I leave now with the air purifier running I did not smell like smoke at all. I would highly recommend this product to anyone thinking about purchasing an air purifier. I shopped around a lot and am glad with the choice I made.

Upon reviewing many Air Purifiers, this one stood out as a favorite. We received our order earlier than expected and the machine was very simple to set up. Our family stuggles with some allergies so we wanted to see if this would clear the air. After 6 hours of use we noticed that we began to have fewer sinus symptoms associated with allergies. We are not saying everything is perfect, however we are breathing better and having more restful nights sleep. Are thoughts are that this purification system does work at a very good level epecially for the price.

This is a fantastic air purifier! We have had it for about 3 weeks and just love it! It is relatively quiet, especially when it is on the low or medium mode, and has a convenient handle to move it around if you like. It is not too big and we can tell the difference in the air quality. It is a little pricey but well worth the investment. Would recommend!
Breathe through your nose again
By Hank from Los Angeles on 12/5/2006.
Pros: Inexpensive, Long life, Attractive Design
I like this item quite a bit, and it sure does do the job - my wife and I sleep very well. My two small cons are that it's still somewhat noisy (though I have never had a purifier before and can't compare it to other models) and it's pretty bulky. I suggest using this one only in the big space it can clean - 500+ sq. ft. - and getting a smaller one for the bedroom, which I'm planning on doing.
Works well, seems very quiet to me
By BrianE from PA on 12/4/2006.
Cons: Expensive
Best Uses: Home, Bedroom
Pros: Quiet, Good features
I was rather amazed at how little noise it makes on highest fan speed. Too much for sleeping but just fine otherwise. Was surprised at how large it was (web page hard to judge). Seems to do a good job on a large room. While air output is considerable, it's one directional, not sure how well it circulates in a large room. I'm experimenting trying to find best location, angle, etc.

By Home Air Clean Man On A Mission from Henderson, KY on 11/19/2006.
Pros: All The Basics, Quiet, Inexpensive
Best Uses: Bedroom, Living Room
Cons: Unattractive
Bought two of these units for our son's bedroom and our living room (where he spends most of his time when he is home). So far, they've worked great and the low speed is bairly noticeble (easy to get used to the background low noise). He's 13.5 months and had some breathing problems we think is related to allergy in our area. So far, it hasn't ridded of all his symtoms, but I know it's helping and the air is much nicer to breath.
Good, but not quiet
By AJ from NYC on 11/17/2006.
Best Uses: Home, Bedroom, Office
Pros: Inexpensive, Long life, Easy to clean
Cons: Loud
The AP510 works well - you can feel the difference in air freshness, and odors don't linger like they used to (we have a home-office right next to our kitchen). On low speed it sounds like an A/C - so not totally quiet, more like white noise.
quiet-ish, smooth lines and effective
By DC Furie from Washington, DC on 11/15/2006.
Best Uses: Home, Bedroom
Pros: Quiet, Attractive Design, Inexpensive
Cons: Styrofoam confusion
was confused about the styrofoam *inside* the unit. thought it was for shipping until i searched the internet and learned that it was for sound muffling. There could have been a flier explaining this to save brain drain. Other than that easy to start using, lots of good options for use (levels, sleep mode) and not too bulky.
Effective and portable-have now bought 4
By Jason with allergies from Mission Viejo on 11/13/2006.
Pros: Attractive Design, Long life, Quiet
If you want an air purifier that truly works, this is the king. It is not tiny, but is stylish enough, and the handle on the top makes it portable. You could go with one of those ultra quiet Sharper Image types, but they are NOT NEARLY as effective. So if you want a machine to actually clean your air, you will have to deal with some fan noise.

Best Uses: Bedroom
Cons: Larger than others
Pros: Quiet, Lightweight, Easily portable, Inexpensive, Perfect for bedroom, Attractive Design, Long life, Great value
This product was exactly what we were looking for. We spent weeks researching air purifiers and are very happy with our choice. My husband and I were noticing problems with our allergies, we have a large dog and live in Florida. The first night we used this product we could tell the air was cleaner. We haven't stopped using it since! The "sleep mode" is perfect for nighttime and reduces the noise dramatically. We don't even notice that it is on. We increase the speed during the day for optimal air purification. We don't have enough great things to say about this product!

Quiet and Powerful
By BrooklynJon from Brooklyn on 11/3/2006.
Best Uses: Home, Office, Bedroom
Pros: Relatively quiet, A good value, Very high CADR
Cons: Styrofoam, Utilitarian appearance
This air purifier has a very high CADR, which enables it to freshen a large space. Although its nothing great to look at, it moves a lot of air, and it's relatively quiet. It also has a sleep feature, which temporarily reduces the fan speed, so as to reduce the noise. I also have Austin Air filters, and I think the Whirlpool model is quieter relative to the amount of air it filters. I recommend it, particularly for large spaces, such as basements, or large open rooms.

Although I was taken aback by the size of this unit, it is worth its weight in clean air. There has been construction going on outside my condo for months, and the dust it produces is thick. This unit runs as quietly as others several times smaller. It doesn't present too large a depth that it can't be placed strategically in any room. Best Uses: Large Rooms, Everyday Use

Pros: Powerful, Simple Controls, Easy To Assemble, Easy To Clean
I purchased this after reading a very positive review of the slightly smaller model in the leading consumer magazine (the one whose name you can't print). I am a heavy smoker and it does a good job of cleaning the air of smoke odor. It is almost silent in all but the fastest (Turbo) speed. However, it is loud enough to require an increase in volume of the TV or stereo when in the Turbo mode.
