We have washer and dryer by Miele of Germany, which I highly recommend. Persil (gel) detergent works like a charm. Is appears to be very expensive, but it is not - you use miniscule amounts - it lasts a long, long time. Clothes are sparklingly clean, colors are vibrant, and the laundry room smells sooooo goooood.... When you have a water softener, use half, or even 1/3 of the manufacturer recommended amount.

The product is very efficient - we are using portions smaller than recommended (1/3 to 1/2) and the dirty cloths become clean - no sweat. They also get a nice scent that my wife likes and I don't care for. Works great on technical (running) shirts that require gentle handling, and on regular cloths. It is not cheap but with smaller loads it is essentially half priced. Buy it, don't think twice. OTOH the powder may work as well, but I like liquids.
