Benefit: Enhanced definition of non progressive scan / non-HDTV signals

Explanation: There is an increasing amount of programming available that is produced and presented by the major networks and local affiliate stations in high definition. However, we will all continue to view a substantial amount of television programming that originates as conventional analog signals for many years to come. Since they are specifically designed to handle high-resolution signals, digital projection televisions require special processing systems that convert incoming analog pictures to the higher scan rates used by HDTV. The quality with which this conversion is done is a major factor in determining the overall picture quality of the TV when viewing standard definition sources.

Mitsubishi's exclusive DiamondDigital Pixel Multiplier™ is now in its third generation of development, known as DPM3™. A major advance of competitive systems, DPM3™ provides high quality signals regardless of the input source: analog over-the-air television, cable programming, satellite systems, VCR playback or non-progressive scan DVD players.

DPM3™ uses both digital and analog processing to analyze the vertical and horizontal components of each picture element, or pixel, in a video image and apply proprietary algorithms developed by Mitsubishi's digital television engineering team. DPM3™ does more than just "double" the number of vertical scan lines as with conventional, off-the-shelf video processing systems. By operating dynamically as the picture scans from left to right, the horizontal resolution is enhanced as well.

The total picture optimization made possible by DPM3™ enables Mitsubishi to deliver standard video images with the fine detail, sharp focus and smooth, natural texture normally associated with HDTV. Thanks to DPM3™, Mitsubishi delivers high quality images regardless of the input source.

  • Five Format Modes

  • Auto Film Mode (3:2 Pulldown Compensation)
Film Mode - Movie film has a frame rate of 24 frames per second, while video is recorded at 30 frames per second, with each video frame made up of 2 fields. This makes transferring movies to video rather complex. The result is that some video frames consist of fields from two different film frames. Depending on the amount of motion taking place in the programming, these video frames can cause the picture to jitter or flicker. Mitsubishi's Film Mode detects these frames and applies motion adaptive technology to stabilize the picture. The result is a smoother, more continuous appearance to video that originated from film.
