Sony 10" Subwoofer, Model XSL102P5

Key Features:

  • 10" Polypropylene Cone
  • 1200W Peak Power (330W RMS)
  • P5 Turbo Cone Design
  • Gold-plated Binding Posts
  • Small Sealed/Ported Enclosure Optimized
  • 4-Ohm Voice Coil

Features:

  • 10" Polypropylene Cone
    • A thermoplastic vinyl polymer exhibiting high tensile strength, resistance to solvents, and superior temperature stability. Long polymer chains exhibit these properties because the long chains tend to randomly orient themselves within the compound (often referred to as highly amorphous), and become extremely entangled. This can be visualized by imagining a tangled mass of shoe laces - pulling out any individual shoe lace is more difficult as the mass become more entangled.

Thermoplastic materials such as polypropylene can go through many temperature change cycles without any appreciable chemical change. They are created from polymers, which are long, repeating chain of atoms formed through the linkage of many monomer molecules, which are small molecule that may become chemically bonded to other monomers.

Polypropylene is inexpensive to manufacture and quite robust, and has found to be quite useful in a variety of products, speaker cones among them. It offers a low cost solution as a material that exhibits strength, rigidity, high internal loss, moldability, and excellent resistance to environmental influences such as moisture, UV radiation, fatigue, and temperature.

  • 1200W Peak Power (330W RMS)
    • Meaured in watts, the maximum amount of power a speaker can handle under test conditions, using short bursts of input signal, with a narrow frequency range. Sometimes called "peak power", this specification can vary between different manufacturers. The max input power rating is often anywhere between 3 to 5 times the speaker's "Ad Hoc" or RMS rating.

A power rating conforming to "RMS" or "AD Hoc" follows industry-wide accepted specifications. The rating is made under continuous power over a period of time as opposed to short bursts, and is typically a full frequency band width spec. Industry standards usually follow a 20Hz to 20,000Hz frequency band. Other standards used in an RMS rating include distortion and impedance specifications.

Caution should be used when matching various stereo components, as different units use different power ratings. Speakers are often measured in max power ratings, while amplifiers have traditionally been measured using RMS or Ad Hoc ratings.

Sony provides both Max Input Power (or Peak Power) ratings and RMS (or Ad Hoc) power ratings for their amplifiers and speakers.

  • P5 Turbo Cone Design
    • The newly designed P5 Turbo woofer cone features a radial ribbed cone surface, improving performance in two areas - lower distortion and higher output.

The unique ribs increase cone rigidity, reducing the flex common in conventional cone designs. Less flex translates to lower distortion and greater accuracy in audio reproduction, especially in the lower frequency bands.

The cone surface area has also been enlarged, resulting in greater output. The same input power yields higher SPL . The P5 Turbo woofers also feature increased power handling, making the P5 Turbo woofers our best yet!
  • Gold-plated Binding Posts
    • The best electrical conductor known to man is gold. Gold transfers electricity with the lowest resistance (at room temperature) of all known materials. In those systems where there must be no compromise, gold-plated connections are used to maintain the integrity of the audio signal.

Gold also is one of the few high-conductivity metals that resists corrosion, even under adverse environmental conditions, like those found inside a car or boat. For these reasons, Sony chooses to plate their high end speaker connectors with precious gold. This ensures a long-lasting and low impedance connection.
  • Small Sealed/Ported Enclosure Optimized
    • In most vehicles, there's enough interior space for the occupants and perhaps a few packages, but not much more. There are few instances where one is willing to give up half the trunk or hatch just to get decent bass response.

That's why Sony developed a line of subwoofers specifically optimized for small sealed and ported enclosures. These woofers can pump out gobs of bass in enclosures as small as a half a cubic foot for some models. And most work exceptionally well in enclosures a mere 1 cubic foot in net volume!

So keep your spare tire, and load up the trunk with your groceries. With Sony woofers, there's no more sacrifice.
  • 4-Ohm Voice Coil
    • A 4-ohm voice coil is a virtual guarantee of compatability between your amps, speakers, and subwoofers. For virtually all the single voice coil speakers that Sony makes, a 4-ohm voice coil is employed. Most Sony amps are rated as 2-ohm stable as well. So with 4-ohm voice coils, two speakers can be wired together yielding a 2 ohm load, increasing power and output.
