I am a custom A/V retailer. I install many of these players in customer's homes. We find the reliability and ease of use one of the biggest draws towards this equipment. Many of my customers have extensive DVD and CD based music libraries. This player gives a place to park these disks, and provides fast access to them.I have two of these operating in my house, one for movies and one for music. Sound and pictures are great. As for titles, we provide a sheet to our customers that they can write down titles as the disks are inserted, and this helps the title programming later. We have found that few disks contain title info.We train customers in our showroom prior to them actually having to program these titles. It takes me approximately 60 to 90 minutes to program 400 disk titles, and most customers can do it in 2 hours or less, the first time. Preparation is the key.I FEEL THAT SONY SHOULD PROVIDE A WORK SHEET WITH EACH UNIT. WE HAVE A 25 DISK PER PAGE SHEET THAT SPEEDS UP PROGRAMMING, WHICH WE SUPPLY WITH EVERY SALE.As for design, al electronics are a work in progress, and everything improves and simplifies with age. Feedback is what drives engineering, and produces change.Love the product, and I sell it to others. A good low cost solution to a problem most people don't even know they have. My pre-k kids operate this with out problems.

The picture and sound quality, as well as the connectivity options are what you would expect of Sony. Two strong recommendations for Sony are to improve the automated titling. I loaded 50 DVDs and 150 CDs into my new unit yesterday evening. After 3+ hours of evaluating my media, the device detected and labeled 13 of the 200. Not sure what impact the carousel load has on reading this information, but Sony must improve the hit rate and should improve the time it takes for the device to read the titles (especially when it comes back with nothing).

Great for vacation homes!
from Los Angeles
Comments about Sony 400-Disc DVD Mega Changer:
We have this disc changer in our vacation home. It's great because our video library is at the hands of rental guests without being out in the open for discs to go "missing". We have this, and all our other A/V equipment, locked in the A/V closet and guests can easily scroll through our entire library to find a movie to watch. We also have a 1-disc changer located outside of the closet for times when we, or guests, bring other movies. It was a wonderful solution to stop the theft/misplacement of our DVDs!

Biggest pro is it keeps my children from scratching the discs. As mentioned many times the user interface is pratically worthless. Not user friendly in the least. As others have mentioned I have an exel spreadsheet with three lists. One sorted by disc # another by title and another by genre. Will probably buy the blu ray version next but hope they have a better interface.
This Model is Great but..........
from Bronx, new york
First I would like to state that is Model is GREAT but the 200 disc model was and still is better. (Had it since day one and it still works) Sony should have used the same software as the 200 disc model. it is easier to find your collection on the explorer menu. punch in a number and play. this one I just made a list in my favorite program (EXCEL) and use that. all in all though its good could be better.

Love it, er, them. I own two. I still remember getting up to switch discs but no more of that nonsense. Undocumented tip to switch discs directly via the remote:With the remote switched to DVD, Display > Enter > Disc # > Enter > and then Display again.
Please release a new driver for DVD loading
from Suburban Chicago, Ill
Sony, as life long consumers of your products the technical features of your products have always been superior to your competition. As with this unit the video and playback features are superb, yet the user experience is woefully inadequate. Please create a software release for the DVD loading process as this is clearly to weakest feature of the unit.As labeling standards may have changed, please continue to support the product to remain contemporary.
I have 2 of the Jukbox changers and these players are reliable and durable. However, Sony needs to modernize the interface so it is compatible with computer technology. It would be beneficial if the player could be connected to a home network via Media Center to allow access to the DVD's and CD's. The player should access the slot, read the information and build the database automatically. Most of my collection is covered by the DRM that protects copyright. That is fine with me. I just want a mechanism to access the DVD's that I have purchased.Programming the player is a pain. I have the cheat sheets and although they are functional, it is not the best way to store information.

Having owned this unit for some time now I find that it does, in fact, function as advertised. Some of the complaints that I have noticed in other reviews I find to be a bit nit-picking. Once I put discs in this machine they generally stay there. I would not expect to be changing the content frequently. The automatic titling on load is dependent upon the disc publisher not Sony's problem. Titling manually may be a bit tedious but when a PC keyboard is used it moves fairly quickly. To document the contents I have created a '.doc' file in my computer and have printed it out both numerically and alphabetically. This work fine. The machine is full and I need another one. I have been waiting to see if Sony is going to produce the same unit for Blue-Ray. May have to go with the current product again.

Not as good as reviewers state
I am very disappointed in the front end of this DVD changer. Sure, the upscaling is great and sound quality is great, but I have to have a print out of my discs lited alphabetically so that I can find them. Then I spend 20 minutes getting to that disc with the on screen display. There is no way to jump to a letter or anything.Very few discs are automatically registered. I am ok with that, but it is a symptom of the same problem. The software is horrible. In this day and age, I am surprised that Sony could not create a better piece of software to control the limited required data on 400 discs. Itunes, Windows Media player etc... all do a much better job at this. Also, because the unit does not have RS232 support, you can't even hook it up to an external system like Escient Fireball. For the money, it is a good DVD player, but Sony missed the mark if this is supposed to be a good movie server.
Does The Job
from Cleveland, OH
This unit does everything as advertised. All functions work with relative simplicity due to a well laid out front panel and remote control. Upscaling is superb. Super audio, when playing a SACD disc is great as long as the multi-channel outputs in the back of the unit are used. Its design is based on archival (or library) system of DVD/CD storage. The unit does not provide print-out capability of what is loaded. However, if you remove the DVD jacket and place into a clear plastic sleeve (8.5" X 5.5") and place the sleeve into a same size 3-ring binder you will have the library at your finger tips. Overall, a very good value.

I received this unit however most of my commercial DVD's would not play. I loaded the unit up with nearly 400 discs and about 75% of them would not play.
