CableCARD™ is the name of a limited access control card provided by the local cable company that allows Digital Cable Ready TVs to receive, decode and de-scramble premium digital channels without the use of a cable box. One way systems allow both basic and premium channels but do not allow video-on-demand or pay-per-view ordered by the remote control. On-screen guides are not provided by the cable company but alternative guides are often available. The CableCARD™ is provided by the local cable company. When the TV owner moves to a new area, the first card is returned to the cable company and the new cable company provides a new card.
