Toshiba SD-3990 Progressive Scan DVD Player, Model SD3990

The SD3990 DVD player features ColorStream Pro® Progressive Scan Component Video Outputs for enhanced color purity and image detail. DivX® Home Theater Certified allows playback of DivX, AVI and MPEG4 (.ASF) compressed files downloaded from the internet from a personal computer and stored on a CD-R/RW. The convenient JPEG Photo Viewer enables users to seamlessly display digital photographs from disc onto their televisions. Play back MP3 and WMA files effortlessly from compatible CD-R and CD-RW discs. Virtual Surround Sound recreates dynamic multi channel surround sound from two stereo speakers.

Key Features:

  • DivX® Home Theater Certified
  • Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 Pulldown)
  • JPEG Viewer

Audio

  • WMA & MP3 Playback
  • Virtual Surround Sound

Convenience

  • Digital Picture Zoom
  • Screen Saver
  • Front LED Display

Jackpacks

  • ColorStream Pro® Component Video Output
  • Coaxial Digital Audio Output

Benefits:

Video

  • Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 Pulldown)
    • Benefit: Delivers the smoothest, most film-like images to any progressive scan television, such as an HD-compatible one, and ensures maximum resolution.
  • JPEG Viewer
    • Benefit: Enables the display of digital photographs captured in the JPEG format. Simply load the CD with your favorite photos and create custom slide shows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control.

Audio

  • WMA & MP3 Playback
    • Benefit: Play recordable Compact Discs (CD-R & CD-RW) with music stored in either the Windows Mediaâ„¢ Audio or MP3 file formats can be enjoyed.
  • Virtual Surround Sound
    • Benefit: Provides a simulated surround sound effect when using two stereo speakers. Convenient when playing DVD films with home theaters not equipped with multi-channel playback compatibility.

Convenience

  • Digital Picture Zoom
    • Benefit: This interactive DVD feature allows you to select an area of the picture you want to zoom in on and magnify it. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces superior color fidelity and resolution, even when you’re zoomed in. Also can be used to expand letterbox-only films to increase the viewable area on-screen.
  • Screen Saver
    • Benefit: The player can be set to automatically go into a screen saver mode after several minutes of inactivity. While in this mode, the Toshiba DVD logo appears and "ping-pongs" across the screen. Many movies will display the main movie menu indefinitely after the movie has ended. If left onscreen for a prolonged period, burn-in on the TV screen may result without this feature.

Jackpacks

  • ColorStream Pro® Component Video Output
    • Benefit: These outputs allow the video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component video equipped interlaced or progressive scan TV. When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts-like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker-are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity.
  • Coaxial Digital Audio Output
    • Benefit: Sends the audio signal to an audio/video receiver in its digital form allowing access to the Dolby Digital® /DTS® track encoded on the DVD disc.

Jackpacks

  • ColorStream Pro® Component Video Output
ColorStream Pro® progressive scan provides a non-interlaced component video DVD/TV connection that allows DVD-Video to reach its maximum picture quality potential. Every DVD-Video disc is mastered in MPEG-2 progressive scan (480P). By preserving DVD's progressive scan image, the ColorStream PRO connection provides a new dimension in total picture quality, delivering a more film-like, three-dimensional image. The progressive scan image is flicker-free, with virtually no visible NTSC line structure or motion artifacts, and offers better resolution than standard interlaced images.
  • Y, Pr, Pb
Refers to the color video output jacks on DVD players with component video. Y is the Luminance, which is the brightness and gray scale portion of the signal. Pr is the red portion of the signal minus the luminance element. Pb is the blue potion of the signal minus the luminance. These require less bandwidth than the R,G, B signals.

OK if you don't have cable

I bought this as a cheap DVD player to replace another brand that broke... I was surprised to see that there are no coaxial inputs/outputs to allow TV signal to flow through... this player is strictly for watching DVDs, and you can't use it as a TV addon unless you have a converter which will cost you more money.
Pros: Easy To Use, Easy To Set Up
Best Uses: Home
