I replaced a 12 year old model of this same trash compactor. The screw that held the foot pedal on wore through the metal hole. It got a lot of use, so no big surprise. Although I was used to it, I never liked the foot pedal, and you had to apply some pressure to depress it, so it was no wonder it finally broke. This new model allows you to pull the drawer open with the handle, or use the foot pedal. It is so much easier! The drawer pulls open very easily and slides in and out effortlessly. And, it really looks sharp. My old one looked very dated, so the new one has given my kitchen a little face-lift!

Had a Kitchen-Aid in hte house when we bought it. guessing it was 20 yrs old. Finally it wore out & we replaced with a GE Profile in stainless steel. Almost 13 months to the day, it growled really loud & smoked. Unplugged it & called hte store. The warranty is a year. Repairs are on me. If I pay nearly [$] for an appliance, it should last for years. When it was working it had a LOT less power than the Kitchen-Aid. This thing wont crush plastic milk jugs for crying out loud! Basically I bought a [$] stainless steel trash drawer.

Very Basic Compactor
from Wilbraham, MA, United States
I purchased this unit during a kitchen remodel. Extremely high priced unit with no additional options. Just a simple unit with a foot petal to energize the compactor. The door is not well made, it appears to be for light use and very noisy. I already had to have this unit serviced before its first use because the plunger wouldn't plunge. The motor would run but nothing would happen. The service man came out a week later and could not find anything wrong with it but it did start working for him. Lets hope it will continue to work. This compactor is not recommended for heavy use as it seems to be very delicately made compared to other units I had in the past.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
'Tin canish' feel - door wobbly when closed
from Fremont, CA, United States
Too pricy for a basic dated product, wobbly door handle, does not have an air filter to keep odor out.
Easy to operate
from Tucson, AZ, United States
This is very easy to operate, and I like not having to touch controls with my hands. However, I am a bit concerned about the durability of the "step" opener.
I was replacing the one that broke
from Massachusetts, United States
I only bought it to replace the one that broke. It matches the other GE Appliances in my kitchen. If I was buying all my appliances today, GE would be my last choice.

The compacting ability of this unit is very poor. In addition, the front is not truly stainless steel but some sort of plastic stainless steel finish. The streaks created from just water drips are very difficult to remove even with recommended cleaners. As a result the unit is maintenance. Mounting bolts were missing from the installation package and we waited weeks for them to arrive. The unit was recommended by a salesperson and instead of looking at reviews online I trusted the advice in error. Also, the trash bag caddy for the unit is an additional expense. Purchased a GE to support U.S. made products, but the quality of this trash compactor is very disappointing.
Clean operation with ge plastic garbage bags.

This unit was just the right size for our remodel.

Only compacts the trash a little, therefore does not hold as much trash as I would have hoped. My last compactor really packed it down. Also, unless you close it with force, the compactor pedal does not pop into place for compacting
Not as good as the old one I replaced
from Plano, TX, United States
I bought this 5 months ago after we had our kitchen remodeled and went with stainless steel appliances. It looks really nice. Unfortunately the performance doesn't match it looks. I had to call the repairman out 4 time in the first month because it wouldn't compact at all. The compactor plate would go above the threads and wouldn't come down. The repairman finally replace a control part and now it works. However, it doesn't work as well as the 25+ year old Whirlpool compactor I replaced. It doesn't have a super compact mode which my old one did and I loved. It also has no way to fix the bag inside, so after a few compacts the bag start to slip off of the edges and I have to keep pulling it up which then un-compacts some of the trash. If you need a good compactor, look elsewhere.
