I have 4 remotes (TV (JVC), DVD (APEX), STEREO (JVC) and VCR (JVC)). I've been juggling, dropping, losing among those 4 remotes. My kids don't make it any easier either. After reading all the reviews (+ve and -ve) in [...], I've decided to buy this to replace all of them and it didn't disappoint! Setting up was super easy! I love the learning mode (and I had to use that for a few functions). System control buttons (already set 2 of them) execute a series of operations nicely. However, the major component select buttons (TV,DVD,VCR etc) are unlit - makes it harder to see in a dim area. (Repeated usage makes you memorize the buttons, so that was the workaround!). I am fastidious so, I tested if all the TV remote buttons are emulated. Found one minor issue: The caption button on the TV has no corresponding button on this remote. I've tested this remote to learn it using a totally different component. I didn't like this way. The system control buttons are nice. I set it to execute a series of operations. So, when I press them it should execute and press them again it should reverse it. Meaning, power on and play when pressed, press again the same button, it should stop and power off. Most of the times, it is dubious! Some times it works ok. I don't want to use one button for power-on and play and set another button to stop and power-off. That would not be efficient. Those are the only issues so far in this 3 week period since I bought it. The price cannot be beat! [...]! I think it is worth every penny for my purpose - to replace my 4 remotes (this can control 8 devices, so I still have room for 4 more). All in all, I would definitely recommend this.

Great, except no Sony Blu-Ray code

Comments about Sony Black Learning Remote Control:

A terrific universal learning remote that can truly consolidate all of your remotes into one, provided you can remember which functions are "learned" by various keys whose labels may not match those of the original component's remote. The learning function makes it possible to program some esoteric functions that most universal remotes lack, as well as non-standard components like the Roku streaming video player or even an air conditioner. In some cases, though, there aren't enough buttons to completely replace an original remote. For example, with Cablevision's Scientific Atlanta HD DVR (UR2-CBL-CV04 remote), the RM-VL600 doesn't have enough buttons to cover the PIP function buttons and the /A\-[B]-(C) buttons (along with all the matching labeled functions), which means you have to choose which ones ot include and which ones to leave off. Not a big deal if you don't mind keeping the original remote handy just in case you need those extra functions once in a while. You could also use a separate component function set, such as SAT or TAPE, to cover the extra buttons. Also, there is no code for a Sony Blu-Ray player; you have to "learn" each individual key. The only real drawback there, aside from the time, is that you don't get the one-touch power-on that you get with other Sony components using the function button, and again, there aren't enough buttons on the remote to cover all of the BD player remote's buttons (including the four-color function keys). The macro buttons at the bottom are especially useful for input and function changes that require multiple steps, e.g., turning the TV speakers off or on to toggle between them and an audio system. These require some experimentation, however, as the macro sequence may go too fast for the component's response time. Overall, this is an excellent and VERY affordable alternative to the flashy, more versatile, more ergonomic but incredibly expensive Logitech Harmony series.

Excellent product, best value around!!!

Comments about Sony Black Learning Remote Control:

I wanted to get rid of all those remotes on my night stand, After spending $89 on a Harmony remote and being frustrated with it for almost a year; I bought the Sony RM-VL610 from the Sony Style outlet and and I am completely satisfied. All of my components are Sony and worked without any setup, my Magnavox LCD TV (made by Phillips) needed a Phillips code which took me a few minutes to figure out. The biggest plus is that the remote remembers when you choose a video or audio component and uses the correct volume (i.e. receiver volume versus TV, or cable box channel versus TV channel). Nice job Sony, I wish you could help me get a refund from Logitec ;-)

Comments about Sony Black Learning Remote Control:

Outstanding remote! The only problem I had was that I could not easily use it with my Sony DVD Recorder or any DVD recorder. I called Sony Tech Support and they confirmed that the remote cannot be used for DVD recorders because there are no Sony preprogrammed codes for DVD recorders, however, you can program the remote to operate a DVD recorder if you program one button at a time using the remote's learning function but even then all functions may not work.

Comments about Sony Black Learning Remote Control:

I purchased this because even 2 current year Sony products i own do not know each others codes. I figured that the learning function was what was needed. It learns codes flawlessly. There are not enough generically labeled buttons to replace my DVR remote - but general use for basic playback works well. Button "feel" is a bit cheap and sometimes sends double codes if you are not careful to push and immediatlely release the button. Great value for the money - saves on wear and tear for the [expensive] original devices!
