The Refrigerator Ice & Water Filter #4396701 should be replaced every 6 months or when the "change filter" light comes on - whichever comes first.

NSF tested and certified Whirlpool OEM replacement cartridge for Whirlpool refrigerators.

Dimensions:

1 3/8 inches in diameter and 9 1/2 inches long

Installing your new water filter:

Twist the old filter a quarter-turn counterclockwise
Pull the filter straight out
Remove the reusable color-keyed knob from the end
Discard the old filter
Slide the knob onto the end of the new filter
Push the new filter into the fridge until it stops
Twist the filter a quarter-turn clockwise
Reset your "change filter" light (if your fridge has one)
Resetting your "change filter" light:

Press the light switch (the one that the refrigerator door presses every time you close the door) 5 times within 10 seconds.
OR
If the fridge has a filter button, press and hold it for 5-10 seconds.

Works as expected. My last one lasted for exactly the rated six months of use before the "Change filter" indicator in the fridge turned red. I've measured the particulate matter in the water before and after filtering using an IntelliTEC probe. Tap water before filtering: 150-250ppm After filtering: 20-70ppm Nice!

Filter produces great-tasting water

When I built my house in the country, I knew the well water would be hard. I planned on buying bottled water which I had grown accustomed to doing when I lived in an apartment on city water. Much to my surprise, the filtration system in my Whirlpool refrigerator produces such good water, I cannot tell the difference between the water I get from the refrigerator v. the bottled water in the supermarket. My one idea for improvement is to make the filter cartridge case with a handle that I could put my hand through during replacement to make turning it easier. Actually, if it could be located higher up and tilt out, that would be even better.

Good luck getting the old filter out

Once the filter has been replaced, the new filter works very well. However, removing the old filter is extremely difficult, requiring bizarre feats of strength and coordination all while hunched over the base grill of the fridge.

Great-tasting water ... once installed

This is a replacement base grill filter for our Whirlpool refrigerator. We struggled to get the old filter out, and due to the air-water physics in the system, the water dispenser valve leaks for a bit for a while after the filter has been replaced. But after the filter is replaced and the minor leaking subsides, the water tastes great. I can only presume that the filtration meets the specs advertised (e.g., lead, mercury, etc.).
