Reviewed by Dave (Everyday Drinker) from Holley, NY on Jan 30, 2010
I have used this grinder every day for at least two years. It is my first grinder so I have nothing with which I can compare it. I use a Keurig single cup machine and only brew one cup at a time. I also use a Breville Cafe Roma espresso machine almost daily. The grinder does great for either type of coffee, and for the most part, is easy to clean. The only two issues I have are the location and shape of the grind tray, and the inability to remove the internal grinder for cleaning. Other than that, this machine is great and I recommend it.

I bought this for making French press coffee, so I needed a consistent course grind. The Breville did this. Very little sludge left behind. I like the looks of it and how easy it is to operate - one button and voila. It's good entertainment for the kids as well :). Not as noisy as a blade grinder I had (Krups). Only knock I have against it - a bit messy to transfer the grinds.

I use mine to grind 2-4 scoops a day, and after 5 months, not a single glitch. While there is a very small layer of fines in the bottom of my shot cup (I grind a low-oil medium roast bean at the 3rd "click" of the Espresso grind setting), I suspect it isn't going to get much better, unless you pony up the Lira for a Rancilio or Mazzer. Getting the grounds out of the container can be a little messy, as it is a slightly irregular shape. Static has not been an issue. Burr heating during consecutive grind cycles has not been an issue. My machines include a Krups 964, a Krups FNC Novo 3000, and a Breville BES820XL.

Awkward drawer, stray grounds keep it from re-inserting all the way, needs frequent cleaning, flimsy lid, doesn't pour easily but still like the performance overall. Consistent grind size & better flavor than blade type.

an excellent grinder for everyday use

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
The grinder is sturdily built and attractively designed. It is excellent for everyday needs for household use. The loading hopper and grind receiver could be somewhat larger. I don't know why the amount-to-grind control is calibrated in seconds rather than tablespoons, cups, or other volumetric amount, but that's a minor matter. Overall I'm very satisfied with it.
Pros: Easy To Use, Less noisy, Consistent Grind, Stylish
Best Uses: Home, Everyday

An excellent step up from blade grinders
Reviewed by Karl (Everyday Drinker) from Chicago, IL on May 27, 2008

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I received the Breville grinder about 2 weeks ago and have been using it about every other day since then. Since I was stepping up from a blade grinder, the improvement has been remarkable. Much better tasting coffee and honestly, less noise than the blade grinder I was using. That's not to say the thing is silent, just less noisy than my alternative. I had read some complaints about static causing the grinds to stick in the hopper and while there seems to always be a small amount that doesn't want to come out, it is far less than I was led to believe and really isn't even worth cleaning out. The grind so far has been consistent, although I will say that I only use it for drip coffee as I don't have an espresso machine. Cleanup has been very easy as there are only a few parts to remove and wiping things with a damp paper towel and letting them air-dry has been enough so far. In conclusion, I would highly recommend the Breville to anyone looking to step up from the atrocious blade grinders and not break the bank at the same time. It's efficient, stylish on the counter and will vastly improve the quality of your morning coffee.

I like fresh coffee and I grind every day. It might be the climate, but during grinding a fair amount of static charge is generated causing the grinds to "jump" out of the recepticle when I open it. I also have to run two grinding cycles for a sufficient amount of grinds to brew the strong coffee I prefer. That said, I am very happy with the consistency of the fineness of the grinds.
Pros: Consistent Grind

Cons: small quantity of grinds, Messy, Small Hopper

As with any grinder, you need to get use to the coffee brand/type/roast to determine the right grind setting.Changing coffee may require a change in grind setting. I like strong coffee, so the long grind times (finest setting) makes the grind timer not as useful. Very pleased otherwise.

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
Needed a reasonably-priced burr grinder to handle a wide range of grinds for various types of coffeemakers I happen to own. The Breville BCG450XL conical burr grinder was a perfect choice. Mine has a very useful range of grinds from coarse to fine, and grinds consistently, an important point. No static problems, and there are no issues with large amounts of grounds hanging up in the machine or loose beans getting caught in the hopper as I have seen happen with other grinders [...]It is about the quietest burr grinder under $300 I have tried. Very easy to clean, with a lift-out top burr plate. Very satisfied overall.

EXCELLENT BURR GRINDER! The best I have
Reviewed by Brian the coffee roaster (Everyday Drinker, Coffee Aficionado) from Yakima, Washington! on May 14, 2007
BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I have been a home coffee roaster for over 5 years and this is the best coffee grinder I have ever used. It produces a very even grind very quickly, even with a slow burr grinder speed. Slow grinders are the key to reducing static electricity and a mess.... it also produces a more flavorful coffee compared to a fast grinder speed or a blade grinder. Usually, a slow conical burr grinder would cost a lot and would only be bought by a coffee shop, this is great for home use! It's great!!
Pros: Consistent Grind, Stylish, Easy To Use
Best Uses: Home, Office, Everyday
