I used this for a turntable and a nano.
Reviewed by jimsony (Technically Challenged) from Dallas, tx on Aug 07, 2010
BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I used this to hear my turntable due to lack of phono input and it also worked on my ipod Nano that for some reason I could not hear from my new sony reciever. Whats the deal with no instructions? Also it has a place for an adapter but they dont mention it at all they just assume you know. The universal adpater from Ryno does not fit this product. I put the grouding wire on the screw although I am still not sure if that is correct.
Cons: Difficult To Set Up

Just what the home theater needed

Great preamp for old turntables used with modern home theater systems. You can buy a universal adaptor to eliminate the use of a 9 volt battery. With the wall wart adaptor you can leave the unit on without the worry of a dead battery.
Pros: Easy Setup, Compact, Easy to hide
Cons: No battery included
Best Uses: Old turntables, Home Theater

This was returned as it added a significant hum to the signal. Unit runs on a 9V battery that runs down if you forget to turn it off. Has the ability to accept a 110V adaptor that must be purchased separately. Would suggest buying a new turntable with built it pre-amp before buying this.
Pros: Easy Setup
Cons: Poor Sound Quality

No instructions, but after tinkering with it I found and removed the two screws that hold the cover on. Battery goes inside. Once that was done, the item worked fine. Very small amount of distortion on some very high notes, probably because there's no "de-emphasis circuit" (as I remember it being called), but otherwise sounds goood.
Pros: Good Power
Cons: No instructions
Best Uses: Older Turntable

Watch out for the on/off switch. It is unmarked and you need to make your own on/off marks. If you leave it on for long periods, you will have to replace the battery. If you use an external power adapter, watch out for hum.

My only criticism of this pre-amp is that I didn't read the description closely enough. It is battery operated. It does have a connection for DC power, but you have to buy your own power adapter. On the positive end, set up is extremely easy and it works!

Put the 9V. battery, connect the preamp between the turntable (know what that is?) and the PC using a "y" connector with 2 RCA's and a 3.5mm banana jack a the other (extra accessory cable), launch "Audacity" (free at http://audacity.sourceforge.net) and you are cooking. So simple, even I can do it... The sound quality is good but bear in mind that it will not make a worn LP sound new, and that I could not pass for a true audiophile.
Best Uses: Audiophiles, Basic Systems
Pros: Can supply your own power, Battery power, Easy To Set Up, Durable, No audio cables supplied, Clean Sound, No external power suply

Seems like GE is unaware of their own product...not on their website, no tech sheets supplied to vendor. If you miss the tiny on/off switch, you may think it doesn't work, but it does, at about the same level as a built-in pre-amp.
