Whirlpool AD35USS 35 Pint Dehumidifier, Model AD35U

ENERGY STAR® qualified to remove moisture using less energy, this Ultra Low Temperature dehumidifier removes 35 pints of moisture per 24 hours in temperatures as low as 38° F. Ideal for use in very damp areas such as bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms and laundry rooms.

Features:

  • ENERGY STAR® Qualified
  • AccuDry™ Sensing System
Smarter than average. Whirlpool brand's unique AccuDry™ System revolutionizes air moisture removal. Rather than sensing air moisture levels after dehumidification, like most brands, AccuDry™ senses moisture before it is removed. This allows the dehumidifier to cycle on and off more regularly, providing reliable moisture control. And, the AccuDry™ System exhausts out the back of the unit preventing warm air from blowing directly into the room. Smart innovations to make you more comfortable.
    • Accurately senses air moisture
    • Unique system allows dehumidifier to cycle on and off more regularly
    • Back of unit exhaust keeps warm air from blowing directly into the room
  • 35-pint Moisture Removal/24 Hours
  • Operates as Low as 38 Degrees F
  • 2 Fan Speeds
  • Adjustable Humidistat
The adjustable humidity control allows you to choose the dryness of the room for your family's comfort. The dehumidifier will cycle on and off to maintain your selected level of dryness and comfort.
  • EZ-Empty™ Bucket (Front Removable)
  • Automatic Bucket Full Shut-off
  • Bucket Full Indicator Light
Whirlpool's smart dehumidifiers know when they are full. The Bucket Full Light tells you when it is time to empty the bucket and delays operation until you empty it.
  • Direct Drain Hose Connection
  • Continuous Run Mode
  • Easy Rollers® System

Collects water beautifully
By Over-researched Homeowner from Highland Park, IL on 08/19/2008.
Pros: Compact, Energy Efficient, Lightweight, Effective
Best Uses: Dank Basement
Describe Yourself: Homeowner
Cons: Noisy, Awkward Water Pan
Primary use: Personal
When using in a basement, the noise -- sometimes a lot, sometimes not -- isn't an issue. The product does a great job gathering water and, after a great deal of research, I concluded the flaws of the Whirlpool were fewer and less serious than the flaws o the competing brands. Just be careful emptying the water bucket, which sloshes over quite easily, and tell yourself that the modest price is a compensation for questionable longevity of product (at least in reviews).

Pros: User friendly controls, Effective
The Whirlpool AD35USS was chosen based on research for efficiency and well-known brand name to be used in a non-living space basement during summer. The unit was found to be efficient, but it makes alot of noise. Factory service was contacted and I was advised that the "Made in China" components, such as the compressor just do not perform as well as they could. While it's running, it sounds like an old klanky air conditioner. Even when the unit was placed on a thick carpet, the noise persisted. I tolerate this only because it's in the basement. If it was in a living space, the noise would be intolerable. The future for this unit is uncertain.
Great product, Wish it a little quieter

Cons: a little noisy
Best Uses: Dank Basement
Pros: Effective, Energy Efficient, Compact

I have been using it for 3 weeks. It removed moldy smell from my basement, and made it cooler during the hot summer. I was surprised to see so much water in the collecting pan after 2 days. The only thing that wasn't so great is the noise from the fan and motor. It is louder than I expected, but I think I can live with that.

Pleased with the Whirlpool
By Headhunter from Medford, NJ on 07/29/2008.
Primary use: Personal
Product came right out of the box and ready to go. Has apan, but I preferred a hose connection to a sump in the basement. I hooked it up and within 24 hours there was a noticible difference in the basement. I found it to be quiet, although that was not an important issue for me since it was in the basement. Nevertheless I was surprised at how quiet it was compared to the one it replaced.
Very Pleased!!!

Best Uses: Dank Basement
Pros: Effective, Quiet, Compact, Lightweight

Primary use: Personal
Cons: Water Pan Small
Over the years, I have used several brands of dehumidifier and this one works best by far. It is very quiet and the various settings allow it to work well in almost any situation. My only issue is that the water pan is a little small and sometimes fills up in less than 24 hours. Hooking up a hose so it can drain continuously into a floor drain will fix that problem.

More effective than I thought it could be for 1200 sf space after reading package. Package said I might need 50 pint/day dehumidifier instead of 35 for basement but this seems to work fine, though it seems to run continuously. Basement is cool and dry. Package also suggests a dedicated electric circuit and has big scary warnings about using extension cords, so I complied and added a 20 amp circuit, though a couple of lamps are also plugged in. Controls on top panel are difficult to read when placed up high. Would be nicer on front, but probably easier to read when on floor. Would be nice to have current humidity readout. It's quiet enough not to notice. Easy to set up and forget. Air is nice and cool. Unit blows warm air from side. Side placement of hose drain means other side with exhaust is going into the room unless you curve the hose around back and exhaust into a corner. Overall very nice and a lot quieter than my old 75 ppd Comfortaire. Hopefully it will last longer.

[...] This was a replacement for a 50 Pint Dehumidifier by Whirlpool. The evaporator coils sprung a Freon leak and rusted out after about 14 months. [...] This dehumidifier is quiet, effective, and attractive. It is easy to hook up a garden hose to a floor drain. I just hope it lasts longer than the 14 months that my first one lasted.

I replaced a very old 15 pint dehumidifier. It's taller that I expected, but slim (depth), and the bonus is it can fit against a wall. This one is much quieter than my old machine. There is compressor noise, but I expected it. I would give it 5 stars if the humidity setting was varible instead of just 3 settings. (I'm not looking at the machine. It's something like minimum, medium, maximum). But, so far, it's made a vast improvement in the comfort of my basement -- to including dehumidifying the attached storage room and bathroom. Love it.

This product works great in my basement which is damp (but not wet), especially in the summer. I use a hose, which was easy to hook up, rather than emptying the water bucket. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition as it was very well wrapped. I would definetly recommend this procuct.

My son and daughter-in-law sent this dehumidifer to me to replace a very old one I had that kept freezing up. They have a larger one and love it also. In the winter, I open the heat vent in my basement and all is good. Spring and summer this year has been extremely damp because of all the rain. My old dehumidifer would freeze up at fairly high temps. This one is good down in the 30 degree range. My basement never gets that cold.I am a senior citizen (80 +) and I have no problems lifting the bucket to empty the unit. I am very pleased with my new dehumidifer.

We had a really damp basement this year. We purchased this because the carpet started to smell musty and we did not have a good way to air out our basement. It worked very well. I quickly decided to attach a drain hose and that is a really good choice. Otherwise, I would have had to empty it twice a day; it pulled out that much water.

I have two of these dehumidifiers. I keep them on the automatic setting. I use one on each end of my house; master bedroom and living room. The central air runs less. I have a medical condition that makes me intolerant of humidity. I am so much more comfortable since I started using these dehumidifiers, especially at night.

Works well, but it's only been 3 weeks
By Consumer527 from Bethesda, MD on 06/20/2008.
Best Uses: Dank Basement
Pros: Effective, Lightweight, Compact
Describe Yourself: Homeowner
Cons: Leaks, Awkward Water Pan
Primary use: Personal
After only 3 weeks of operation, I have no major complaints. But this dehumidifier has some limitations: (1) the "normal" humidity setting seems too low - the basement felt damp after it shut off. So I run it on the "dry" setting instead and turn it on and off manually. It would be nice if there was a numerical relative humidity indicator. (2) The water pan is very awkard to carry, and it's almost impossible to empty into a bucket (to water the garden) without spilling some water, although it's no problem to dump it into a sink. (3) There seems to be slight leakage. I think water drips for some time after the dehumidifier shuts off, and flows through draingage holes in the floor plate when the water pan is removed unless the pan is immediately replaced. But otherwise this seems to be a good machine for the price. I'll learn more next month when I see the first electric bill, at the end of the summer when I open the dehumidifier to clean the heat exchanger, and next year when I start it up again.

Works fine, draws out a lot of moisture. However, despite a simple garden hose connection to drain directly, the water does not seem to go through the hose but instead is still draining into the pan. I can't see how this is possible and have yet to fix the problem. My last dehumidifier had the same connection which worked as it should.

That's what we keep asking, "Is It Running?" It is so quiet we don't hear it unless we're standing near it. It removes the moisture effectively and efficiently, better than the previous unit. We were so used to the noise of the old unit that's why we keep checking the tank for water, and yes, it's working.

I bought this dehumidifier for my apartment living room where we have had moisture and mold problems due to old, non insulated windows. After some research I chose this model mainly because of it's good reviews. ABT's excellent price made it that much easier to decide (thank you ABT). So far it has exceeded my expectations in performance, and at least met them in all other aspects. The windows seem to be staying almost completely dry in the cold weather. I dump almost half a bucket full every day and that is on the lowest setting, and not running it all day. The only thing that I would change is the design of the drain bucket. When the compressor kicks on, it tends to vibrate it enough to have to raise the tv volume about two notches. I have dampered the sound by wedging some paper towel between the bucket and the machine, which helps quite a bit. The actual fan is pretty quiet. The compressor, not quite as quiet, but tolerable. That is expected though. Don't be mislead by my 4 star rating; I believe there is always going to be room for improvement. I almost gave it 5. All in all, it's a quality, effective product and I hope to get many years of use out of it.

This dehumidifier is exactly what I hoped for when I ordered it. It's dimensions fit into a narrow space, and the venting allows it to be against a wall. I have it in a bookcase, so that it empties via a hose to a wall drain. It seems to be very efficient, and is much quieter than a model that I had previously.

We use the dehumidifier mainly in our home office, where it is most humid. All of our items were starting to get mold stains from the years of humidity in the room. Once we ran the dehumidifier we noticed a difference in the air overnight. Not very quiet, but it is fine when running at night with the doors closed.

This is much more quiet than my old one. The only thing I dont like is that the bucket is a little hard to empty. I will have to look into hooking it up to a hose for automatic empty.

This is a replacement for a more expensive unit which "ate up the electricity like it was sugar sweet."The unit is located in a bedroom in a danp basement. Even on medium setting it works superbly. It is quiet, and we have already paid for half of it in just two months by the reduced electric bill. Originally I had planned to use a direct line for emptying. It is so easy to empty, I've postponed installing the line emptying feature.[...]

We bought 3 of these dehumidifiers. We have 2 on a wooden schooner and 1 on another sailboat and they are keeping the insides nice and dry. We have hoses hooked up to drain into the bilge so do not have to empty the water pan. They are working great and pull a lot of water out of the areas.

Love the way this dehumidifier works in cooler environments because of the automatic defrost. However, when the compressor is running, there is a major rattling noise between the water fill bucket and the housing above it. We have softened that rattle somewhat by placing a small piece of foam between the bucket and the housing to eliminate direct contact. All in all, I am very satisfied with the unit.

We put this product in our slightly musty basement & that problem is gone. I am amazed at how much water it is pulling from the air. Our basement is now dry and we actually enjoy spending time there. It is attractive enough to leave out in the "open" if you need to do so. Also, nice & lightweight for easy moving. I only wish that we had invested in this sooner! My only possible negative is that I wish it were a bit quieter, though relative to other dehumidifiers it may be whisper soft (by no means is it very bad)- I honestly don't know.

Works great. I think it would do even better for single room applications (we're using it for our large basement finished family room). I especially like the auto cycle function and the selectable comfort levels. Maybe a bit loud, but I can't compare the noise since this is the first unit I've owned. Sound output similar to a small window A/C unit, but a bit quieter.

I use the humidifier in the basement, which is partially finished and so my family spends time there. The humidifier is quiet and doing a terrific job pulling humidity out of the air. Easy to empty the water. I have not yet cleaned the filter but expect that task to be straight forward.

Cons: none

The first day I got this thing I put it in my main finished basement room. I set it on its most powerful setting and 3 hours later I went down and almost had nose bleeds from how dry the air was. Amazing! At that point I placed the unit in an adjacent room where my utilities are and I set up the hose attachment to drain directly into my sump pump. Like the infomercial guy say, "set it and forget it". I set the unit for my desired humidity level and now I forget I even have the thing. How great! The roll around feature is very handy and even when I was using the collection bucket it was easy. There is a filter screen that needs to be changed occasionally but it removes very easily. I am a happy owner.

I use this in my basement. It's great. It is quiet and doesn't run as warm as my last unit. My last unit put out a lot of heat when running. This unit is much different. It doesn't put out much heat at all. I would recommend a 45 or 50 pint unit so you don't need to empty it so often. Although, you could attach a hose to it.

The control panel only allows a few pre-sets for the humidity level. Better to have a dial with infinite settings for exact level. As mentioned, this unit is noisy because of plastic housing which picks up and amplifies motor sounds.

Great dehumidifier. much better than the sears kenmore we had that died after three years of use. I like the fact that this one will work in the cooler months when we still have a tad of dampness in the basement. the old demuidifier would run but do little in dehumidifing.

This product works great however, I probably would suggest the next larger size for a basement. This one fills up in less than 24 hours. I will eventually tie it in to a permanent drain which will eleviate this problem, but if you don't have that capability, I would suggest the larger dehumidifier.

By Tim from Philadelphia, PA on 06/20/2007.
Pros: Energy Efficient, Excellent Controls, Effective, Lightweight, Compact, Good Design
Best Uses: Finished basement
Describe Yourself: Homeowner
Used in our 1000 sq ft finished basement to reduce humidity. Keeps basement dry during humid summer days, and runs infrequently. It sits away from the TV and kids stuff, so the noise isn't bothersome. It isn't quiet, but I wouldn't call it loud. This unit is well designed. The controls are clear and easy to use. The hose hookup is great, and plugs directly to the unit and not to the drip pan/basin like another dehumidifier that we were previously using. Relatively small size and is not too heavy to move around. Very satisfied with this unit after a month of use.
