Nice MP3 player. I did a lot of research and chose this over the new Ipod, and I have no regrets. Do wish it would have come with a protective cover, but I got one cheaply on Ebay. The sound is great, easy to use, and just the right size. I'm going to buy another one for my wife. Would be nice if it had AM/FM, but no big deal since my downloaded songs are basically my own radio station! The Sony base charger--sold via Sony's website--is about 50 bucks and makes this easier to charge and patch music to other players.

This is perfect. Beats the iPod in so many ways: Better sound quality! Ridiculously longer battery life. Faster response time when pressing buttons and switching songs. Easier to find the song and artist you want. Provides detailed song information, such as year and bitrate. Sound is completely customizable. I can't say for sure, but probably more durable and reliable than the iPod, as mine died after a little over a year. Do not buy Apple's lackluster iPod. Get this one!

Sony NWZ-A818 is a Winner!

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
The Sony NWZ-A818 is the first mp3 player I have owned. After extensively reading many professional and customer reviews, it seemed to me that the Sony got the best reviews for sound quality, which is the most important specification for me. I have only had this player for a couple of weeks, and I agree with all of the glowing reviews. The sound quality is amazing. I like the built-in equalizer and other controls that allow one to tailor the sound to the specific music. The supplied headphones, as reported, deliver very clear sound, with crisp highs and warm bass tones. They have a tendency to occasionally fall out of my ears (even after trying the different-sized earpieces) but this is a problem I have with all earbuds. It's certainly not a defect in this product. The unit is very solidly built, and the button action is solid feeling and responsive. The 2-inch screen has a crisp clear display. Syncing music from Windows Media Player is as easy as dragging and dropping. Very fast!I've been having a ball discovering new music and hearing things in old favorites that I haven't heard before. I bought this player from ABT Electronics. [...]FIVE STARS for the product [...]

Very easy to set up and use. Drag and drop windows folders - USB connection. Great sound. I patched it into my Pioneer Head Unit and listen to it while driving to/from work. Playlists and easy sync with Windows Media Player. Headphones have gread sound, but cord is a little too short. Video and picture quality is excellent. Like someone else here, I bought a leather case from Sony. I don't recommend it though. It is too expensive and makes it hard to push the buttons. I totally recommend this unit.

When I mentioned the typical Sony quirks, the cable is proprietary so you just can't use any USB cable for charging and file transfer. I did buy the AC charging adapter for travel use since I don't own laptop for charging - I highly recommend it. I haven't used the video or picture functions and probably don't ever plan on it, therefore I won't make any judgments on those functions of the unit. Those are pretty much the down sides to this unit, everything else is very solid! The sound is fantastic. My previous MP3 player was a Cowon iAudio U3 and it was nice, but the sound of the Sony is several levels better. I primarily use this unit for snowboarding and listen to it with my Giro Tune-Ups helmet, it is a whole new experience or the Cowon. When I use this unit with my Shure ear-canal ear phones the sound is AMAZING! I like the non-iPod aspect of being able to truly own your files, the ability to drag and drop files or using Windows Media player to Sync play lists and files to the unit. Some reviews I read didn't like the hold button on the back of the unit, I think it is great - hard to accidentally bump off. All in all a great unit!
Pros: Great Sound, Lots of Storage, Easy To Set Up, Sleek/Compact
Best Uses: Snowboarding
Cons: Typical Sony Quirks

Excellent MP3. Sound quality is excellent. No need to look beyond the Sony NWZA818 (unless you need lots and lots of GB storage). One note, however: Sony should make the AC charging device standard with (part of) the purchase of the MP3. Currently, Sony is selling the AC charging device as a separate product.

Very small and easy to use - USB connection. Can transfer files/Playlists with Windows Media Player or drag and drop. The Sony Media Manager Software (free download) stinks though! You have more options with XP Media Player. Video and Pictures are clear; can be displayed Portrait or Landscape. Sound Quality is very good, headphones are excellent, but the cord is a little funky (one side shorter than the other). I bought a case from Sony..a little pricey, but couldn't find one elsewhere. All in all, not a bad device with great sound quality and enough storage for me.
