Comments about Denon RF Remote Controller:

My programmable remote background was centered around a 6yr old Denon RC8000 remote operating a Denon 5803 amp. This new RC7000 remote eliminates just about all the complaints I had with the older remote.

For those of you new to advanced programmable remotes, I’ll first say you must have a complete set of hard keys. That way, you can pick up the remote in a dark room, and just using your finger muscle memory, find a particular key, and easily scan through commercials on your DVR (for example). The RC 7000 also utilizes a monochrome high contrast backlit screen.

I am using the RC7000 in the IR mode only. I programmed a separate LCD screen for each of my A/V devices, then changed the memory functions for the hard keys (if needed) to accommodate that particular device. This allows you to do things like to always use one particular key to enter “setup” on all you’re A/V devices.

I also programmed the main power ON/OFF, and Volume control buttons to only work the amp. If I later want to change the TV volume, then I would add prompts to that particular LCD screen
This remote also allows you to copy functions from one page to another. That way, if you happen to start with the TV function, you can add prompts to the TV LCD screen to also turn on the DVD, and select DVD Input on your amp. This keeps you from surfing through multiple pages (like other remotes) just to find one other function.

The fact that you can change labels on the LCD screen for all of your prompts means that every key tells you exactly what it is going to do. You don’t have to remember that Aux2 is really an MP3 input … you just relabel the prompt. The relabeling of prompts on the screen is a very real strong point. Once you properly set up this remote, then your friends or Significant Other, can actually pick up the remote and successfully figure out how to use it. Usually with programmable remotes, you’ll always need some function off the original/actual device remote … so, you’ll keep it nearby just in case. Honestly, this RC7000 really does incorporate all the functions you need, and in my case I am using this single remote instead of six others.

I do have a few complaints about this remote. The first is the numbers/symbols on the hard keys are difficult to read (too small, and low contrast … medium grey letters on black buttons). I would also have reversed the generic set-up buttons (near the top) with the play/pause/etc buttons on the bottom. The bottom of the remote gets slimmer/slippery and makes it a little difficult to get a stable grip on the remote. And finally, there is a virtual lack of any instructions on how best to “edit/program” the remote. My background with an older Denon remote helped a lot. If you buy this remote, you won’t regret it, but, it will take you several hours to get comfortable navigating through the editing software and customizing the RC7000 to suit your needs.
