I have had three Kitchen Aide mixers. I upgraded to the professional 600 model, which works fine. I do not understand why your more expensive and heavy duty mixer does not come with dishwasher safe beaters and dough hooks however. I washed mine and they immediately discolored. Given that the accessories for the 41/2 quart model are all dishwasher safe, this seems like a clear design flaw.

Terrible finish on beater
Comments about KitchenAid Stand Mixer 5 Quart Narrow Bowl Burnished Beater:
I bake frequently and am constantly annoyed and frustrated that the flat paddle leaves grey streaks in my food. It's gross and very frustrating to have a high quality mixer, a wonderful whisk attachment, and such a disappointing dough hook and flat paddle. Has anyone found any other companies with compatible paddles that are of better quality?

Same gray stuff in my food!
I came to purchase a new flat beater to replace the one that was leaving gray residue in my food and on my hands. I now see it's still a huge problem with no alternatives. I have a Pro series mixer and a cheap beater! It very sad this is the quality of such a important part of a appliance that cost so much money. ....and I had NO dishwasher when I first had this problem with the gray residue so it's not only a problem from proper care.

Finish comes off
from Sycamore, IL
I bought my 600 Pro mixer awhile ago and after using it a few times I found out the hard way that the finish was coming off my beater. I was making a white icing that turned grey during mixing. When I contacted Kitchen Aid about it they recommended using "barkeepers friend" to wash it because it sounded like it had oxidized. They didn't suggest replacing it for me. So now I wash it BEFORE and after use each time. Pain in the butt but I love my mixer.
Same problem with finish coming off
from Golden, CO
I have the same problem everyone else reported - I hand washed the flat beater and the finish has come off, leaving a rough surface with ashy residue. Is there a stainless steel replacement available?
Used beater once and need a new one!
from Salt Lake City, Utah
I gave me old 4.5 Qt mixer to my daughter which I loved to upgrade to a larger model. I like to make double batches. I used this flat beater once, washed it with normal hand dishes and now the finish is coming off! It's leaving a grey residue all over my hands. I will be contacing them for warranty but now I have to pay the shipping? Should't the upgraded models have the BEST beaters the make?! Help, I can't even use it until I get a replacement.
Not the quality you would expect.
from Chicago, IL
I agree completely with the other reviewers in that it is ridiculous that a mixer that costs this much does not have attachments that are sturdy and reliable. I had the same problem in that after it was washed, it now leaves a grey residue on everything. Additionally, as another reviewer mentioned, the white coated beater that is compatible with this mixer is known for the coating coming off! I hope that I am contacted by a representative to fix this problem, and also, that KitchenAid relooks at the quality and materials from which their accessories are made.
What is wrong with the beater that comes with the mixer?
from Greensburg, Pa.
My daughter who is a baking and pastry graduate bought this for herself. I washed the beater and now it is discolored and when you touch it the discoloration ends up on your hands. It has been sitting unused since I have not replced the beater. I thought these pieces would be a stainless steel item and was stunned to find a gray residue on my hands when I picked it up after washing it. I am not pleased to read that the white coated ones peel and that others are having the same problem. I was going to buy the coated beater, but now I am not sure I want to put any money into scrapers that are going to peel, flake, and discolor again. Please contact me with a resolution since others have been contacted. I want to be able to say we have a Kitchen Aide and when there was a problem, they fixed it. The 600 professional series was a huge investment for a pastry graduated to make.

This came with my professional series mixer, and immediately discolored. every time I touch it, I now get what seems to be a metal dust on my hands.
Needs to be Stainless Steel
This attachment comes standard with the Pro 600 6 Qt stand mixer. It is so cheap that the finish disintegrates quickly when wet, and the drying cloth and my hands turned grey with the metal powder. I would not want this metal residue in my food. It should be made of stainless steel

Not what I had hoped for.
I have always wanted a KitchenAid mixer and this year my husband surprised me with a Professional series. I am known for my very smooth mashed potatoes and thought this would save so much time. What I ended up with was lumps. I too placed my flat beater on the very top rack of the dishwasher and all the finish came off and I was left with an ash-like finish that rubs off. I was very disappointed, as this was my first time using the mixer. I am ordering another beater, however, I wish that it was dishwasher safe!
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
