I have had my Kitchen Aid Professional HD since 1998, and use it once or twice every single day at our sporting camp. I never had to replace the flat beater until it got washed in the dishwasher by accident. The directions stated to wash by hand which I always did, but a helper put it in the dishwasher once and that caused the black residue mentioned in the other comments. It is worth having this non-coated paddle, and just washing by hand.

I have had three Kitchen Aide mixers. I upgraded to the professional 600 model, which works fine. I do not understand why your more expensive and heavy duty mixer does not come with dishwasher safe beaters and dough hooks however. I washed mine and they immediately discolored. Given that the accessories for the 41/2 quart model are all dishwasher safe, this seems like a clear design flaw.

Comments about KitchenAid Stand Mixer 5 Quart Narrow Bowl Burnished Beater:
I am using my second Kitchenaid mixer, which was purchased a few years ago. The first beater I used was the burnished model. It quickly turned foods grey also left residue on my hands. So, I threw it away. I purchased the coated beater. Haven't had it for too long. However, it is now chipping and leaving pieces in my food. Yuck. My first Kitchenaid mixer lasted for a really long time. I don't think this second one will. Quality is far lower than in the past. Disappointed.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Bowl Lift Burnished Flat Beater Bad Quality
from Winter Park, FL
Please help. I have had my kitchen aid mixer for quite a long time. I keep it at our vacation home so it is rarely used. From very early on, the beater began to leave "gray" color in my food. I got online today to see if there was a new option for this mixer, but it doesn't appear so. Can you help? Please.

I purchase the mixer as a Christmas gift. My wife uses the mixer constantly. She loves it, but, the grey residue that is coming off of the beater is relentless and will not go away! Its brand new.
Gray and grit

The flat beater feels gritty has a gray residue that comes off on my hands, any towel I use on it, and into the food. I would like a replacement but don't know if I can get one that does not do this. Very disappointed.

I PURCHASED A KITCHENAID 600 PRO STAND MIXER SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND IT CAME WITH A COATED FLAT BEATER. ALMOST IMMEDIATELY IT BEGAN TO PEEL AND CHIP AND WHEN I CONTACTED KITCHENAID I WAS TOLD I COULD BUY ANOTHER ONE BECAUSE MY PRODUCT WAS SLIGHTLY OVER A YEAR OLD WHEN I CONTACTED THEM. I STILL HAVE THE MIXER AND I AM STILL USING WITH THE BAD BLADE WHICH IS STILL SHEDDING PAINT, BUT I HAVE BEEN WANTING TO REPLACE IT SO I JUST WENT ON THIS SITE TO BUY THIS BURNISHED ONE AND ALL I SEE IS COMPLAINTS. I DON'T WANT ANYMORE RESIDUE IN MY FOOD WHICH I AM SURE IS NOT HEALTHY, SO NOW WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS VERY COSTLY MIXER? WHY AREN'T THESE MADE IN STAINLESS STEEL??? KITCHENAID...WHAT DO I DO NOW?? WE ALL BOUGHT THESE MIXERS BECAUSE OF THE PRODUCTS EXCELLENT REPUTATION AND WE ARE BEING LEFT WITH A PROBLEM. PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH A SOLUTION. THIS IS JUST UNFAIR TO YOUR VERY LOYAL (UNTIL NOW) CUSTOMERS.
I love my KitchenAid mixer, but I too am very disappointed that the burnished flat beater is getting grey residue on everything. It looks like the coated flat beater should be the best replacement for this.

Sadly, the other reviews about a gray metallic residue coming off of the product is true. The first time I washed the beater the shiny finish came off.
Grey residue unacceptable

For such an expensive product, my pro 600 series flat beater gave off this grey residue. My husband threw the flat beater away! What good is the machine if the attachments aren't quality products?

Like other reviewers, I too have had problems with the beater discoloring and leaving marks on my hands and food, and also leaving marks on my washcloth when washing.
