I previously owned the Panasonic DMREZ47K and was looking for a replacement. After looking at other, less expensive DVD/VHS recorders I had to go with what I know and went with Panasonic's latest version.I use the unit to record vhs tapes to dvd, to record analog tv show to vhs for delayed viewing, and to record digital tv shows to dvd for my permanent collection. It records on all formats of dvd where many other makes did not.I found the set up easy. There are a lot of instructions but they are easy to follow. I found the whole setup very intuitive.I connect the cable directly to the unit since it has digital and analog tuners (I do not watch any premium channels). I then connect the unit to my hdtv. I can watch one show while recording another. What you need to remember is that you can not rush the machine. This is not some computer script where you can stack commands. It takes time to go thru it's paces - there are mechanical parts to move after all. It needs to finish processing the first command from the remote before it can accept the next command from the remote. I use it daily, several times a day. The digital tuner produces a quality picture to my eye. I am satisfied with the quality of recordings both on vhs and dvd.At this point I have no complaints -- just like I had no complaints with the previous model -- except maybe the price. But ultimately it is worth the price to me.

Wow what a dissapointment! This is my 2nd from Abt (which is a fantastic Company) These uints are extremely slow, I have found if you hit eject while a movie is playing the unit will eject the disc and freeze up. Any normal dvd/cd player you can do this w/o a problem.Change channels too fast it will freeze up, hit the wrong button Direct navagator instead of Return the unit will freeze up and more!I also tried the Toshiba combo units that were even worse. These seem to be the only ones available and all I can say for the money that they get for them they are both boat anchors. Panasonics customer service is basically useless.Bottom line these companies have been making DVD and VHS players for many years that I have used and all were great , these new combo units are a disgrace. The operators manual for the Panasonic is nuts!On the positive side the Panny does have a great picture quality as well as plays back most discs. but make a home movie using Nero in DVD format and trying to put it to a VHS tape forget about it so I would only say the only enjoyment that the VHS player will give you is to play your old VHS tapes. You can not record DTV onto VHS either what they do not tell you is that you can only record analog TV to VHS. Big deal as there is no more analog TV in the USA...........I am going to keep the unit, BUT basically this is the best of the worst that is available on the market. Eventually techonology will catch up and they will either come out with a decent firmware upgrade or better units will be made. But I need to have somthing that can record TV shows.Bottom line if you get one of these make sure to leave ball point pen on top of the player as you will need it to hit the reset button as this thing freezes up for any number of reasons, at least you will get a lot or excersize getting up all the time to re-set it.PANNY YOU REALLY DROPPED THE BALL ON THIS!

Comments about Panasonic Black 1080p Up-Conversion DVD Recorder And VHS Combo Player:
Purchased product to copy VHS to DVD. This was easy to do. I am using HDMI output, but I do not believe the picture is HD like. Have not used all the features yet, but will be trying to copy fro TV directly to a DVD and tape at some point. Combo machines seem to be disappearing, this one is not bad for the price.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Not so good.
Out of the box the back input would not work. If you come to the front the jack would input a signal. This was bad out of the box. The TV open air scan found the stations. Make sure you buy insurance on it. I am send it back for anuther one. Not many recorders on the market with tuners. It does have a nice menue built in for you recordings.
Good quality unit

delivery faster than expected! I needed a dvd/vcr combo to replace one that would not work with my HDTV. This Panasonic unit fit my needs to a tee and I could not be happier. Set-up was easy and the play back of either VHS tape or DVD to my HDTV is amazing! The style and color works perfectly with my receiver and other electronic equipment in my home theater set up.
It's A Shame No More Are Available
I should have bought three instead of one!ABT made this sale easy and thorough. I reallyliked the actual sales receipt they sent in lieuof just a Pay Pal Receipt. So much easier to locate my item from where it was purchased. I simply attach the receiptinside the product manual. Who throws away a manual?
2nd Panasonic of this type
Need to make instructions less confusing.

Generally easy to use. Unit slow to load but records good picture. Main defect is that it will not play DVDs recorded and finalized on another recorder, even though those same DVDs have been played on four other units, including another Panasonic unit. Panasonic was unable to provide a valid explanation for this problem, other than its oft-used "There is no guarantee DVDs recorded on another unit..."
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Lightning destroyed my last one. Abt matched the last price I paid even though it wasn't as good a price this time.
