About Me Tech Savvy
I have used a Sony STR-DE698 for years and was very pleased, but had to upgrade when I purchased a new 1080p plasma TV. The DG-520 is the low end of Sony's new line of receivers. I needed 2 hdmi inputs and the 520 has 2. What they didn't say is that the hdmi ports are pass through only (sound has to be input separately, even though the hdmi is carrying sound). Also, one hdmi port is labeled DVD and the other is BRD (for Blu Ray Disc). Sony tells me the BRD port can be used for any hdmi input. Because of the labeling problem, I just connected the sat receiver and the dvd player's hdmi cables directly into the tv, and ran an optical cable for sound from the tv back to the receiver. Works fine. In retrospect, I think I should have spent a little more and gotten the 720, for more inputs, etc., but I'm quite pleased with the 520. It is very similar to the DE698 in performance and features.
ABT was very prompt shipping product. I chose regular shipping and still had my order in 6 days.
Excellent value for the money
[...]I read numerous reviews of the STRDG520 and chose it because it permits hdmi pass through at 1080p. I only need 2 hdmi inputs, dvd and direct tv hd, so I figured I was good to go, and the price was great. When it arrived, however, the instructions said one HDMI was for DVD and the other for a Blu Ray player. Satellite input was allocated to component inputs, which don't come up to 1080p. (I realize that Direct TV isn't broadcasting in 1080p at present, but someday, perhaps) I emailed Sony support and they replied that it was fine to hook the hdmi from the directv to the Blueray input, so I'm a happy camper once more. Happy with ABT and Sony.
Prompt delivery, excellent packing and cushioning.
