The tale of how I got my Hoover. This incredible machine was sitting outside a dumpster at an RV park we were hosting. My husband not to be left out on a deal promptly retrieved it. I was very skeptical especially since the previous owner clearly didn't want it. WELL, I tried it in our camper and was very impressed. BUT, I knew it was better than our central vac - the real test would be when we get to Arizona and try it in our park model. I was simply amazed at what my canister had been leaving behind in the 3 yrs we have lived in our new park model. The addition to the park model has new light colored carpet. It looked like it would need steam cleaning soon. Now it looks almost as good as new. I still can't believe how much dirt it is picking up. We were also going to replace the cheap carpet in the original park model. But, we will be holding off for now. Again, I can't believe the dirt it is picking up! I would highly recommend the Hoover Empower!! Now all I need is the manual that tells me how to use all the attachments. :)

The Hoover EmPower Bagless Upright Vacuum is a good value for the money. It does an excellent job of cleaning the carpet and works fairly well on tile and hardwood floors too. Its cord is longer than most uprights, which is a big plus, and the fold-down handle makes it very convenient to store it in the hall closet with the winter coats. The downside: it is obviously built rather cheaply. The height adjustment is clunky and made of thin plastic. It feels like it could break easily if used too often. I leave mine at the same height all the time, so that's not an issue with me, but it could be with others. The wand system is weirdly designed, and the spinning wand brush attachment gets clogged with hair rather quickly and quits working until you clean it out. A normal brush attachment works just as good and doesn't take anywhere near as much time to clean. The canister fills up rather fast because it holds about half the volume of the more expensive bagless vacuums, so you have to empty it more often. Like ALL bagless vacuums, you shouldn't empty the canister in the house, as that causes a lot of fine dust to puff up into the air, and the filter needs to be cleaned rather often too - in fact, you need another vacuum to properly clean it. The filters are expensive, so when it needs to be replaced, I could have bought a lot of normal vacuum bags for the same price. The bagless design does exactly as it is supposed to do, but after using this design for awhile now, I understand why bag vacuums are still being made. -- The bag system is much more convenient; you go and go until the bag finally fills up, then pull the bag out and discard it without having the dust-cloud problem that emptying bagless vacuums cause. As I said though, this vacuum does a very good job of cleaning the carpet - especially with getting cat hair up. But its downsides, which all bagless systems share, make me really wonder why anyone would pay upwards to $600 for a bagless vacuum. This one is a good value for [$], but that's the top price limit anyone should pay for this design. Bagless vacuums have a ways to go to being perfected.

DURABLE AND REALLY PICKS UP THE DIRT!!!
from Marcola, OR, United States
Comments about Hoover EmPower Bagless Upright Vacuum:
We bought the house that we live in in May of 07 and this vacuum came with the house. I can only assume that it was about 8 mo at that time. The man used it as a shop vac in the garage where he did his wood work. We had a Windtunnel at the time but the Empower picked up the dirt much better than the Windtunnel and I had thought that it was good. This vacuum has kept the dog hair up when we had a Malamute/Akita mix as well as all of the dust, sawdust and whatever else dust from remodeling up and off of cabinets floors and furniture. The only thing you really need to be careful of is to NOT set it on something to elevate the vacuum because the brush will chew it up (that includes the cord!)
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I bought this vacuum 10 years ago and it still works very well. I broke the power brush attachment early on, but I never thought it was a great tool anyway. The empower has been a great value and I believe it still has a lot of life left in it.

After 11 years it still works. The plastic height adjustment broke early on, but the lowest setting is all we ever wanted anyhow. It stopped moving itself long ago too, but it is still easy to use. After 11 years of faithful vacuuming, no real complaints.

I have had this vac for over 7 years. I decided to wait and write a review after using the vac "long term". I like it a lot.

I have had this vacuuum since 2002 (10 years). PROS: It works well and the canister will clean up very well so odors are eliminated. Power hand tool is WONDERFUL. CONS: Hose could be longer or come with an extension hose. I took apart the Powered Hand Tool and can not get it back together. ;- ( Filters are expensive but a littel research and you can find them cheaper but use the Hoover Brand. Overall this is my first Hoover (I'm a Eureka person) and I am pretty impressed.
