Previously known as Sonos ZonePlayer 120, the Connect:Amp 120 has a built-in state-of-the-art digital amplifier to deliver superior audio to any room. Just connect the ZP120 your favorite pair of speakers, large or small, and fill any room in your house with unlimited songs and stations. To start playing music, one Connect:Amp or Sonos Bridge must be connected to the router, then all the rest work wirelessly.

Key Features:

  • Superior sound with a powerful digital amplifier: The ZP120’s state-of the-art digital amplifier delivers audiophile-quality sound to any room. The energy-efficient Class D amplifier provides 55W per channel of power with a THD+N <.02% for excellent audio quality playback — without hisses, crackles or hums. And because the amplifier is built in, you won’t need to connect to a stereo to play your music. Just plug it in, connect to speakers and enjoy.
  • Best-in-class wireless technology for multi-room music: The ZP120 brings great sounding music wirelessly to any room in your house, without a big wiring project. SonosNet 2.0, our latest wireless mesh network technology, provides double the wireless range for whole-house coverage, ensures synchronous music playback, and avoids sources of wireless interference. Which means the music gets to all the right rooms — near or far — at exactly the right time.
  • Instant access to endless music: Sonos liberates the music on the Internet, your computer and more, so you can wirelessly play it all over the home. Wherever there’s a ZP120 (or any other Connect:Amp), you can tune in to 100,000 Internet radio stations, shows and podcasts and stream millions of songs and stations from the most popular online music services. Plus, you can play your entire personal music library, like iTunes®, in any or every room. You can even connect to your favorite audio source, such as an Apple AirPort Express®, CD player or TV and listen on all the Connect:Amps throughout your home.
  • Control it all with your favorite mobile devices…and more: Wirelessly control all your music and all your Connect:Amps with your choice of Sonos Controllers. Got an Android™ smartphone, iPhone®, iPod touch®, or iPad™? Then, simply download one of the free Sonos Controller apps and take control with the mobile device you already have and love. Want a dedicated Controller that everyone in the home can use? Grab the touch screen Sonos Controller 200 and pick a room, find a song and touch play. Got a desktop or laptop? Then use the Sonos Controller for Mac or PC for added control. They all work together seamlessly so mix and match to your heart’s content.
  • Simple setup and expansion: Setting up your ZP120 is incredibly easy. No technical or wiring expertise required. And no need to break through walls or re-wire your entire house. Add more Connect:Amps in more rooms without adding wires.

I ordered the SONOS ZonePlayer 120 after months of agonizing over whether to spend the kind of money needed to get started. There was a package deal that included speakers and a bridge, so I decided to take a chance. The ZP120 was intended to replace a much larger audio receiver that was being used to power a whole-house wired system that was fed by a wired and wireless MP3 streamer with stereo outputs.

My first impression was the product was protectively packaged, with minimalist contents: the power cord, and flat ethernet cord, the unit itself and an optical disk. The unit is a bit taller than the online measurements, but attractive (in white).

The unit was simple to connect. I decided not to use the bridge and just connect it to the existing router, so it took more time to remove the old receiver than to hook-up the SONOS ZP120. The press-spring speaker terminals are pretty awesome, and the nicest on any equipment in the house. The ZP120 only has two ethernet ports, but that's probably plenty, allowing you to pass-through a cable if you are short on connections.

Powering up I found it not as powerful as the receiver I removed, but the old receiver was so strong I never boosted my room volumes above one or two notches. So, I was able to set the SONOS volume to 50% and use more range on my wall controls. We don't blast the music here, so I'm sure this will be fine.

When I installed the iPad iOS controller software, I was impressed with how fast the updates and setup sequence went. I had already created a SONOS account, but I don't think that is needed, since I never entered a password - just my email. Both the ZP120 and the iPad controlled wanted updates, and they went smoothly. So far, the experience was similar to the quality of that company with the fruit logo.

When SONOS didn't discover my many MP3 daap servers, Iw as feeling disappointed. But after letting it scan my file sahres of music, I realized this is a benefit, since only the files need to be there, not the additional service. The indexing process took quite awhile for my very large library, but nothing failed, so I added two.

Internet radio works nicely, as expected, and SONOS includes one or two free trials of familiar subscription services, which I didn't try yet (this is a first impression) but I'm sure I'll become hooked on those,a s well.

So, I was very nervous about the money spent, but after one night together I think I'm in love. I know I'm going to expand this system as time and money permits.

One thing to add: the wireless, which I am not yet using, is a MESH wireless network on the 2.4GHz band. This is a very crowded band where I live, but I'm anxious to see how the wireless works to the "3" and "5" series wireless speakers. After looking into the wireless features, this is going to be a major feature. And that's an understatement.

First let me say that I have no intention of returning my ZonePlayer 120 amp. I'm not sure I could replace it with something that performs nearly as well as it does. But it has not been a painless installation, by far. If you have a large music collection, especially classical music, you may be in for disappointment. Although the player is supposed to support 65,000 songs it cannot handle even my 45,000 songs, because of the amount of metadata that my collection contains. Metadata is the information attached to a particular track (ie. artists, title, album, etc.). Classical music, especially opera, is very heavy on metadata and as a result the system cannot accept my entire collection. I was then diverted to a paid Sonos associated solution (unnamed as requested), but after nearly 2 weeks of tedious uploading (The product is error-ridden, unreliable, slow and confusing) my music still cannot be played or accessed. Sonos customer support is great, but it has been unable to come up with a solution, which it has been working on for nearly 3 weeks. Nor does Sonos apparantly have any plans to increase its memory capacity because doing so will prevent the oldest Sonos systems (10 years old) from working with new equipment. It seems strange that such a cutting edge company would limit its product capacity based on equipment that should probably be replaced in the first place. Can you imagine being locked into technology for 10 year old phones, TV's or computers? I hope a solution can be found.

Pros:

Wonderful concept. Great for smaller collections that meets Sonos criteria. Awesome, knowledgeable technical support.

Cons:

Large music collections be warned. Metadata limitations. Alternative solutions presented by Sonos are not currently adequate. Sonos technical solutions slow in coming. No "hard" fixes for current capacity issues.

Comments about Sonos Connect:Amp Music Player:

The house we moved into had speakers already wired, with just some speaker wire hanging out of the wall. I left it there for a while, and finally hooked this up - it's a completely transformational way to listen to music! Whatever you want to hear, from any source, and it's super easy and fun to use. I doubt I'm using the full capabilities of the product, but what I am using is really great.

Comments about Sonos Connect:Amp Music Player:

Love my Paradigm speakers and wasn't sure how I was going to truly enjoy a wi-fi sound system with its limited fidelity quality. I then discovered the Connect-Amp and, voila, I could integrate my existing speakers into the system!! Love, absolutely love, my Sonos system. I have the connect amp, my Paradigms, subwoofer and a Play-3 that we move around the house. We also leave the Play-3 on in our large great room with my speakers and it really fills the room with wonderful sound. The practicality of the wi-fi system totally controlled from my iphone is right out of the Jetsons. It's all seamless and was a cinch to get going. I had a hard time believing the guys at the local big box electronics store about all this but they were spot on. This set up is perfect for us. Can't wait to expand and get some more speakers including the Play5 and a better subwoofer.

We opted to upgrade our Sonos
                    System. I am disappointed, frustrated.
I would have preferred to keep
our old system, it worked and
                    was reliable.

Quite costly per room, however I purchased mine in phases for budgetary reasons.
