Comments about Onkyo THX Select2 Plus Certified 7.1 Channel Home Theater Black Receiver:

I've owned the TXSR706B for about three weeks now. It was fairly straight forward to set up. I've watched several movies now and played around with a couple of games and HD tv channels. I'm glad I opted for the THX rated receiver, I replaced an older Onkyo receiver that did not have HDMI inputs. I'm very pleased with the video and audio quality through the HDMI inputs (Blue ray looks and sounds great). I can hear an improvement in sound from the older onkyo (approx 8 years old, non THX). The Audyssey speaker calibration is worth having. I haven't noticed the excessive heat that some reviews mentioned, though I did install a two fan ventilation system in my (closed) cabinet before installing the unit. I would recommend this unit for someone who wants a better than average home theater system at a reasonable price. It beats most every home theater in a box that I've heard easily. I'm still learning how to use all the features and am still tinkering with the set up (programming the different remotes) but am very pleased with my purchase.

        Service and delivery comments:

This was my first experience with ABT and I could not be happier. Their customer service over the phone was very helpful, the receiver arrived packed in a cushioned box surrounding the original manufacturers container, and it arrived at my door less than 5 days from when I placed my order. I will be dealing with ABT in the future. Highly recommended.

Comments about Onkyo THX Select2 Plus Certified 7.1 Channel Home Theater Black Receiver:

After extensive research, I bought this receiver to hook-up my PolkAudio speakers RM6880 5.1 channel. I must say that I am really impressed with the sound quality. This is a must buy if you have 5.1 channel or 7.1 channel setup. Although I was not expecting anything awesome since my living room layout is kind of weird but receiver mic setup helped me configure my living room and after running the setup, quality is just amazing. One thing I had noticed that this receiver doesn’t come with any audio cables. Not that I was expecting any cables but spending another hundred dollars was kind of painful. Onkyo really live it up their reputation on this one.

          Things to remember
          1) Make sure that if you don’t have cable box for your TV, your TV has to have an “audio out” port. I don’t have a cable box but I do have a regular coaxial cable that is provided by the cable company. So it is connected directly into my TV.
          2) Call Onkyo support for any configuration questions you may have they are great source of help.
          3) Use good quality cables. Not saying that you should buy expensive Monster cables but “decent” is a key word. I am using 16 gauge speaker wires with premium quality subwoofer cables.
          4) This receiver gets hot really fast so remember to provide plenty of air flow
          5) And finally, if you live in an apartment complex, and if you have decent speakers, make sure to check with your neighbors. This receiver is very powerful with right speakers setup, your neighbors will definitely notice :-)

Comments about Onkyo THX Select2 Plus Certified 7.1 Channel Home Theater Black Receiver:

I've had this receiver for about two weeks, after doing thorough research to find a quality unit that would serve my needs. I already had a surround sound system and a quality Denon receiver that was about 7 years old. Because I'm in the process of purchasing my first HDTV, and have upgraded to High Definition satellite, I wanted a receiver with HDMI connections to tie everything together. I believe I made an excellent choice.

The Onkyo seems to do everything well. The single most impressive feature, to me, was the way the receiver automatically calibrates all of your speakers for maximum performance in your particular listening environment. I'd read other reviews that commented on this... it's a fascinating process (not difficult). When I was done, my very good sounding system now sounded superb - as though I'd purchased new speakers. Of course, there's no substitute for quality speakers. But, if you have good quality speakers, you can expect that they will sound even better when set up by this receiver.

I still have some learning to do - must spend some time studying the manual - but, so far, I couldn't be happier than I am with the Onkyo.

My Denon 2308 recently died. Its under warranty but getting that repaired easily is another story. I bought the Onkyo to get me through the 4+ weeks I wouldnt have an engine to drive my HDTV & BluRay Movies. The best part about that is being able to compare the Onkyo with the Denon. The Onkyo is the clear winner. Here is where its better:
                  + Easy Setup
                  + Much better interface
                  + More user friendly
+ Unit has more accessible buttons (I like to be able to walk up and hit 1 button to change something, with that said I wish the button were hidden behind a door rather being out in the open which is why I listed it as a con)
+ Zone 2 controls - they are little awkward at first to get the zone 2 turned "on" but the overall controls are better (again more user friendly) (With zone 2, I drive outdoor speakers and 5.1 rather than 7.1)
+ HDMI switching - all inputs, including Svideo, component, etc) can be output through an HDMI cable. This is huge! Only 1 cable (HDMI) to my TV!
+ Connections - the rear of the unit was setup a little smarter to me. Plus the speaker connections were more spread out making the threading of the cable and twisting much easier for my adult fingers

Sound wise the units are about the same. Because the Denon had a little more power I find I need to hold the volume button down a little longer on the Onkyo to drive the volume up or down... But we are talking milliseconds... Both drive my speakers and sub woofer very well.

                  My system:
Panasonic 65" VIERRA plasma (GREAT TV)
                  DirecTV (HDMI)
                  Bluray = PS3 (HDMI)
                  Front speakers - Infinity Prelude
                  Center - Infinity Prelude
                  Subwoofer - Boston Acoustics HPS-12HO
Rear speakers - POLK Montior 50 (floor speakers - it has been a better experience over smaller rear speakers in my experience)
Ipod - Keyspan Tuneview Doc (RF Remote allows you to control the Ipod completely from my patio & Deck - volume and Playlists and entire IPod catalog)

Room - 25X20 Family room with 17' ceiling

Comments about Onkyo THX Select2 Plus Certified 7.1 Channel Home Theater Black Receiver:

20008/12/31;8:48AM,ESTI bought this to power a 58" Panasonic, plasma, 1080p, wall mounted TV in my living room. I had 4 ceiling mounted Sonance speakers, installed maybe 15 years ago, to which I added 3 Aperion wall mounted speakers and an old Yamaha subwoofer, completing a 7.1 system. I feed it with DirecTv and a Panasonic BluRay. Out of the box, it connected with ease and the Audessey mic adjusted the speakers in a snap. The resulting experience is beyond belief. Electronics have now advanced to the point where it is a waste of money to go to the movie theater. I put in the "Dark Night" and it was incredible. But, best was the concert DVD's. Roy Orbison's Black and White DVD was enough to make you feel you were in the audience. The 706 was only [$]and it has true HD, DTS and all the other sound decoding you can use. The next lower Onkyo lacks some of this and I would definitely recommend upgrading yourself to the 706, presuming you have the speaker setup to justify it. I've only briefly used this, but the entire system performs vastly beyond expectations. I'll update as I have greater usage. However, even with my old ears, the experience is definitely worth paying for.I have this resting on a shelf of a custom built stereo cabinet, and I leave the front door open when in use. Plus, I have a number of openings in the bottom and back of the cabinet to allow for convection cooling. I want to install a remote extender so I can keep my beautiful doors closed on my cabinet when in use, but I'm sure I will need to install a cooling fan if I do so that the 706 doesn't burn through the cabinet top. Be careful!
