I decided to replace my 9 yr. old Whirlpool Gold side-by-side refrigerator in February vs. replacing a bad compressor. Now I wish I would have taken my chances w/ the $800 repair instead of buying the Kitchen-Aid side-by-side Architect Series II refrigerator. I am astonished at how refrigerator design & performance has gone backwards over the past 9 yrs. My Whirlpool had excellent features, ran quietly & served me well until the compressor died. The new Kitchen-Aid makes more sounds & loud noises than a high school band. It really is disturbing. The icemaker is obnoxious both in how loudly it operates & its poor performance in actually making ice - once emptied it takes 48 hrs. to refill itself. The compartments & door bins are a step backwards from the Whirlpool Gold as well. For instance, you cannot store a milk jug size container except in the upper door bins which makes no sense if you have children. Also, the interior shelves on my Whirlpool could be adjusted in 1 inch increments wheras the Kitchen-Aid only has a few possiblitiies for shelf arrangement. The icemaker dispenser makes a mess everywhere especially when using the crushed ice feature. Overall, I would rate the Kitchen-Aid as a piece of junk not worth the money, but I'm not sure what's on the market that's any better.

Disappointed with Quality
Comments about KitchenAid Architect Series II Black Side-By-Side Counter Depth Refrigerator:
So far we've had two drawers in the fridge and one in the freezer all fail in the same way. The small plastic tabs that attached to the front panels all cracked. For a premier brand I would expect a better design for something that is put under stress every day. I am also disappointed in flow of the water dispenser. It is painfully slow and the ice make is way ridiculously slow and loud.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

We love the design of our new Kitchen Aid side by side. The clear, clean shelving makes it easy to see everything stocked and makes it easier to be more organized. Quiet, clean, great looking design and our favorite refridgerator by far!
Lots of room and love the lighting inside!!!

Disappointed with many features of this refrigerator. Cheap, plastic DRAWERS- front facing breaks off when pulled out. This happened in the freezer and the refrigerator, I've had to glue them back together because the plastic tabs are completely broken off. WATER DISPENSER- water is room temperature, not cold. Rust is forming in tray beneath dispenser. ICE MAKER - is very loud. SHELVES- are not adjustable. Kitchen Aid has provided service when requested; however, I would not recommend this product.
Interior Space Design Poor

Interior space layout does not fit our lifestyle. Too many small height shelves, not enough variety. Limited medium to tall height shelf layout.Exterior strip under outside dispenser show sign of wear too quickly.
Piece of Garbage

I have had this model for a couple of years and I have had to replace water valves, switches, and make various other repairs. I strongly recommend NEVER buy a KitchenAid appliance. Currently, I am one of the myriad of customers who have a non-functioning ice dispenser. I have gone through all the troubleshooting and had two professionals look at it and they cannot fix it. I think KitchenAid should stick to small appliances and get out of the refrigerator business.

I bought this fridge, spending good money because of the brand name and their 10yr warranty. My older fridge no name lasted 10yrs before it finally gave up on us and I did even have to repair It once. After 1yr the right side of the fridge would not close properly. I called KitchenAid and was advised because its a cosmetic issue it would not be covered and the cost $350 which include parts and 1yr warranty. My husband ended up ordering the $30 part and fixed it himself. Now 2yrs after that our fridge side starting freezing everything! Eggs, vegetables, 1 gallon jugs, was not making ice and the water dispenser was not working. I figure this has to be covered, wrong again. The service rep said "only major parts" compressor some tube thing, I'm thinking wow for such a supposedly top notch brand this fridge is worthless and kitchen warranty is nothing. He quoted me the same price as when I called 2yrs ago, $350 he even added wow sounds like you have numerous issues with this fridge. Its only 3yrs old and we should of went with a no name brand. All they wanted was for us to pay for their warranty again and he even said they will look for a service company by us but we may end up even having to pay for the diagnostic fee! We will no longer purchase kitchenAid products and I hope in the future they consider what their "warranty" actually does for you.
