First, a disclaimer of sorts …. I'm a long-term, died-in-the-wool Hoover evangelist. No, I don't work for Hoover, but I've always used them religiously for over 30 years. I've tried switching off to other top-of-the-line brands, but I always return to Hoover for their unsurpassed cleaning power and reliability. That does not, however, mean they were perfect.• The Hoover WindTunnel U6439 bagged upright that I've had for the last several years would suck up a Buick. Unfortunately, it also rivaled a Buick in the weight category. Although it's supposedly a "self-propelled" model, I felt like I had to go into training in order to vacuum my house. It became something I would put off because I wasn't sure I had the strength to wrestle this bulky beast all over my house. • The WindTunnel controls which allow you to change the brush height from carpet to floor were manual, hard-to-move levers on the brush housing which required you to shut the machine off in order to properly manipulate them. • The HEPA filter on my old WindTunnel seemed to work only for the first few months. After that, all manner of airborne particles would fly around as I vacuumed, even after I cleaned/replaced the filters.• Lastly, noise of my previous WindTunnel was something akin to a jet taking off. When I saw a TV commercial for the Hoover Platinum series machines, I was definitely intrigued. I loved the idea of getting two separate vacuums together for one price (brilliant marketing idea there, Hoover). But I was skeptical; could the power of a Hoover truly be housed in something that weighs only 11 pounds? I'd tried other lightweight vacuums in the past and their suction was dubious at best. I made a beeline for the Internet to start researching. Over a couple of days of intensive reading (yes, I'm very thorough), I decided to continue my trust in Hoover and took the plunge. Both machines come packaged together in a single tall box which was waiting for me on my front porch when I got home from work. The first thing I noticed was that I could actually lift the entire box into the house without grunting like a Sumo wrestler… that was promising. After removing everything, I was stunned at the weight … or lack thereof … for both machines. The physical appearance is very appealing; the upright is sleek and slim with a 35' long cord, and the canister has tools-on-board, along with an ingenious shoulder strap so you can "wear it" while you vacuum. You will be stunned by how little these machines weigh … a child could easily lift them both. But could they clean? When I fired up the Platinum upright, the word that kept coming out of my mouth was WOW. First off, no more jets taking off in my living room … just a pleasing HUM. Second, this impossibly lightweight wonder gives a whole new meaning to the term self-propelled. It seemingly FLOATED over my carpeting all on its own, while still having the suck-up-a-Buick power I expected from a Hoover. It cleaned better in one pass than its older U6439 WindTunnel behemoth cousin did in several passes. I was picking up stuff I didn't even know was there. How about making a pass underneath your bed, or behind your dresser that you haven't moved since you moved in 15 years ago? It was astonishing how well this machine worked in just one pass.I have a rather large, bulky throw rug in my kitchen that I had been preparing to replace because it had become so un-vacuum-able in recent weeks. The Platinum upright made it look brand new. And hallelujah for a TRUE edge cleaner! Everyone claims to have edge cleaning ability on their uprights, but this one truly delivers on the promise. Think about those sneaky areas in your house where all sorts of stuff lingers … like that dead zone along the baseboards tucked up under the bottom of your kitchen cabinets where they meet the kitchen floor. This Platinum upright sucked up all that debris immediately … right to the edge. The maneuverability of the Platinum upright is astonishing. It truly is as light as Hoover claims and it moves as easily as a Dyson. The upright portion of the machine lowers completely parallel to the floor so it really can move under coffee tables with ease. It also moves from carpeting to floors effortlessly with an intelligent, lighted, fingertip control right up there on the handle. The HEPA filtration is light-years ahead of my previous WindTunnel … think HEPA with a Hemi under the hood. Yes, I know that bags are expensive, but you can find discounts if you search online and buy in bulk. Plus, I don't mind paying for a product that truly works … these bags, and this new Platinum HEPA filtration system, truly work. No dust or other airborne nasties were visible anywhere. The Platinum canister has a carrying strap, which makes so much sense. The maintenance crew who cleans my office building uses strap-on canister vacuums and I always thought that was such an intelligent design … now, I've got my own. And all the tools are right there attached to the unit, ready and waiting for you. I toted that canister all over the house, cleaning window sills, ceiling corners, air conditioning vents, everything! Then I walked into the garage and started cleaning the inside of my SUV. It's quiet, powerful and incredibly portable … the best "canister" I've ever used.In my first test run of this Hoover Platinum "vacuum system," I found myself LOOKING for stuff to clean; I couldn't get enough of it. The Hoover UH30010COM Platinum is, quite simply, the best vacuum PERIOD I've ever owned. I absolutely LOVE this machine … and to get 2 vacuums â€" an upright and a canister â€" for the same price just makes terrific economic sense. It has extraordinary power in a relatively quiet, sleek, lightweight package that doesn't leave me feeling deaf, sore and exhausted. Bravo, Hoover!Run, don't walk, to get the Hoover UH30010COM Platinum vacuuming system … you will not be disappointed.

I bought a brand new house and decided to treat myself to a brand new vacuum. The local retailer (nation-wide department store, begins with "S") had this model cheaper than the internet price so I bought it. I LOVED this vacuum. I LOVE a clean house. It was not long before the machine would cut out and stop. I would turn it on and vacuum again and it would cut out. Thinking it was in need of another bag I changed them out. No use. It kept doing it. As the vacuum was only 6 months old I brought it back and demanded a new unit or my money back. The young guy had no problem with handing me a box with a new unit ( I now have two of the small canister vacuums that come with it). So now it is another 6 months down the road and this new unit is doing the same thing. My husband took the unit apart, researched the issues, and discovered it is the thermal fuse. The instructions say to let the machine cool. That does not work. There is NO dust or dirt on the motor, the belt looks new, the bags are empty. So obviously it is a poorly designed fuse. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE. A machine for almost 400 dollars and this is the aggravation I get? A vacuum that works great the first few months. After the Christmas holiday I will again take this to the store to see if they will replace it. If not, I will go to another brand. Sorry Hoover, your made-in-China technology just can't handle my need to vacuum 5 times a week.

Great vacuum handle breaks due to power
from Louisville, KY, United States
Comments about Hoover Platinum Collection Bagged Upright Vacuum With Canister:
This is a great vacuum and you sort of expect it based on the cost but i didnt give it 5 stars(honestly it should be less) because the handle broke 2 times and now i have it duct taped to the body of the vacuum. I am reaching out to customer service to see if they will do anything about it. I dont want to pay an additional $85 to replace the handle. I hope you dont vacuum as hard as i do haha.

Can't find v-belts
By frustrated 2
from Helper, UT
I bought this vacuum in 2010. I have really enjoyed it except that I cannot find any v-belts to fit it. We ordered the ones that are showing and they are too big and narrow. No where on the vacuum or in the manual does it show the belt size.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
I loved this vacuum until....
from Dalls, NC
I've had this vacuum for 5 years now and had an extended warranty with Best Buy and it worked great until my warranty ran out. Now it's extremely loud and doesn't seem to pick up like it used to! I bragged about this vacuum cleaner to everyone about how it was worth the money but now I'm beginning to wonder since it's so loud I feel like I need earplugs to run it! It is also very hard to push but I've checked all the rollers and can't find a problem. Perhaps it's only good for 5 years?

2 vacuums are better than one.

I bought this to replace my upright bagless. I hated the bagless feature; cleaning it out and shaking out the filter was a mess, every time. So I purchased this one primarily for its bagged feature. First and foremost, this upright vac uses direct air flow. This means the suction is in the middle of the nozzle and will have equal performance on both ends of the nozzle. This has been a noticeable improvement when vacuuming against baseboards. High end vacuums have direct air flow for a reason; it's more about air flow than motor power and direct air flow has the best performance. However, if you want direct air flow, you have to give up the option of having attachments because it's not physically possible to have both. That also means if you have attachments available for your upright, your nozzle will have "by-pass" air flow and one side of the nozzle will perform better than the other. I am very pleased with the vacuuming performance of the upright. Also the headlight is very useful. It throws a bright, even, and wide area of light. I can vacuum in a nearly dark room with it. I vacuum at night and I like not having to turn on all the lights in the house to see what I'm doing. The upright also can practically lay flat and I am able to vacuum under my coffee table (something I couldn't do with my bagless upright). It works great on my hardwood floors and it doesn't spit out debris towards my feet. It is relatively light, the handle has a nice feeling rubber grip, and I think it's an attractive quasi-retro looking unit. I really debated weather or not it would be a hassle to have a separate unit to use attachments. I'm glad I gave it a shot because I now think the task of an upright and using attachments should have always been separate. When using the attachments on my previous upright it was very common to accidentally pull the vacuum and it would bang into something or fall over. It was also cumbersome to move the vacuum in one hand and the attachment in the other. With this canister vacuum, those problems are eliminated. It's so much more convenient to wear the vacuum with a shoulder strap to do attachment work. It's very light and comfortable, and has much more suction than my precious upright's attachments. My old attachments also fit. The cord is long, but could be longer. Although you can wrap the cord horizontally around the bottom of the unit for storage, it would have been better if there were dedicated hooks like the upright has to keep the cord mounted. It also blows quite a bit of (warm, not hot) air from the exhaust holes so watch out for any loose and lightweight items when using it. The pitch of the motor is higher than a typical upright so it will be perceived as being louder than usual. I always wear ear plugs when vacuuming so it's a non issue for me. Overall I am very happy with the performance and the design of this combo. Having two vacuums for two different jobs makes a lot more sense to me now that I've experienced it in practice. The 6 year warranty sealed the deal.
Great Vacuum and Customer Service
from Fresno, CA, United States
I had originally given a 1 star review after the handle of my vacuum broke right after my warranty had run out. But, Hoover immediately contacted me and set up an extension of the warranty fixed it, and 2 days later, my vacuum is working like new. It's an awesome vacuum (great suction and lightweight), so I am very happy I can continue using it!
Handle broke in half
I loved this vacuum-it had great suction and was lightweight and easy to carry up and down the stairs, but unfortunately, in the middle of vacuuming, the handle broke off. I can still turn it on, but it is no longer functional without the handle and since we bought it barely over 6 years ago, we are outside of the warranty. A replacement handle is $87-but I'm not sure I want to spend that much on a repair. I see a lot of other reviews about the handle, so would love to know if this feature has been modified to make it more durable. Disappointed to spend almost $300 on a vacuum that had such a short life span.

We have had this model for several years and find it to be a great machine. Does a great job and the extra mobile canister is great. Would definitely buy again.
I like this vacumn
By Ted Louis

Has worked well for the past 2 years and now it has a smell coming from the filter bag and I replaced bag and smell keeps coming back. When I take the bag off and turn it on all good. I then put the bag on and the smell comes back. If someone can help me fix that smell it is a great vacumn but if it cannot be fixed then I would not recommend.
Great vacuum, until it dies
In terms of functionality, this vacuum is great. It's lightweight, has good power and it's easily the quietest vacuum I've ever owned. But, two years into its life, it began shutting off after running for a few minutes. According to a dealer and research online, the circuit board in the handle needs to be replaced. Of course, the warranty is only 1 year, so I'm out of luck. Now I have a vacuum that runs great for two minutes before it shuts off. If you're really fast, you can get an entire small room done. :-( I expect a Eureka to last only two years because they're cheap. This was NOT a cheap vacuum.
Lightweight and thorough

This is my second Hoover Platinum. I own a B&B and have to carry my vac up and down the stairs. This is so lightweight and it does a great job even on my hardwood floors. No spitting out the back like most uprights on hardwood. I recommend this to all my friends and family and now to anyone out there looking for a new vac that does a great job.
