I purchased this washing machine to replace a Maytag which broke down after 12 years. I have used it for 3 weeks and think it does a great job cleaning my family's clothes. (We are a family of 6: my spouse is a tradesman and outdoorsman and the kids LOVE to play outside and get their clothes dirty, so I am a heavy-duty user.)

It has a stainless steel wash tub with bleach and fabric softener dispensers. It has hot, warm, cool, cold, and tap cold water settings for water. It has numerous wash cycle options ranging from delicate to heavy duty (think bed comforter). You can choose whether the load has light, normal, or heavy soil. You can choose whether to have an extra rinse. You can choose whether you've added fabric softener or not so that the machine adds a bit of extra water for the fabric softener during that stage of the wash.

The water levels are determined by the machine; the user does not set the water level. The machine senses load size and adds water accordingly. I read complaints while researching this machine that it overfills for 2 pieces of clothing, but I have not had a problem with overfilling with a small load. I peeked one day when I was running a small load and the water level was in line with the size of the load. Once I closed the lid from peeking, the machine added more water because it assumes that an item of clothing is added when the lid is opened. I assume this feature does save on water, but my water service is not metered at present so I have no hard numbers to compare.

The user's manual specifically warns against opening the lid while the machine is filling, so if you're the type who likes to see what's going on in there, buy the machine with the glass lid (which will run you about $70 extra).

The machine does not fill with the lid open, which will drive you nuts if you like to start the machine, add your detergent, and then add the clothes. This has taken some getting used to, since I used to add the detergent and then rinse out the cup with the running water as it filled the machine. Easily remedied, so not an issue for me. I now predissolve any powdered laundry cleaner (OxyClean, etc.) and just pour it in with the detergent before I add the clothes.

I have washed small loads of delicates up through a king-size bed winter comforter in it and everything comes out clean. The clothes spin out very well and are drier than with my previous machine. To test this, I timed a dryer load of towels and they were done 10 minutes faster than with my previous washing machine. That saves me electricity and natural gas costs.

The machine is a bit loud, so I would not recommend it if you have your laundry room in a living area of your home. I have a laundry room in the basement. We have a rec room and exercise room immediately adjacent to our laundry room and the noise isn't obtrusive to us there, but I do have to turn my laundry room radio up a bit louder when the washer is running and I am working in there.

I give it 4 stars because it is a bit noisy and you can't dissolve your detergent in the machine with running water, but those are minor inconveniences overall. Performance and capacity are great. This machine does a great job for my family's clothing and I would recommend it.

Although there is a setting for hot water, because of the energy saver it adds cold water to the wash, and the water is never hot. Unless you use the setting for heavy duty with an extra rinse setting , your clothes never come out clean. The only way you can get enough water to fill the tub, is to lift the lid after it fills. The sensor than thinks you added more clothes and it will fill water to the top. If you let the sensor decide, you will get soap marks on your dark clothes. It has a funny oder. Initially, I thought it was because of the stainless steel drum. But, after 2 months the smell is even worse. It almost has a moldy smell. It also makes a lot of noise. I hate to return anything. I was hoping to get use to this machine, but I will have to get rid of it. All I want is a simple washer that I can decide how much water to use as well as the temperature. A machine that gets clothes clean without me thinking about it,and without a bad oder in the machine and on my clothes.

hard to find energy star top-load washer. unlike front-load, this does not leave water residue that smell moldy. after loading clothing and adding detergent directly to load, just shut door and turn on. have not had issue with detergent staining clothing yet, or with water over-flow, or with clothing not clean.

Has a sensor to fill the tub with water and does not cover the clothes. Have to run spin cycle twice to remove water from clothes.
Broke down under warranty. Will not get part until Jan. 4th, 2012. Have to go to laundry mat for over a month.

This is a great washing machine! I replaced my 17 year old Kenmore and was a bit reluctant at first to switch brands. There were some negative reviews about this washer and I am very glad that I ignored them and went with this machine. It cleans clothes well and much, much faster than my old machine. It is quiet and efficient. The auto water adjust level is a nice feature. I would highly recommend this washing machine.

This machine while is great with it's features is HORRIBLE I only put in bed sheets and it it ripped and ate my fitted sheets. SO very unhappy with the machine and the fact that I can't open to make sure there is enough water is a minus overall I wish I had purchased another and will be returning it ASAP for a one one!

Easy to use. Read directions, load everything, close lid, set dials, turn on.

But, I returned home to a "funny" smell that turned out to be a flooded basement! The piece added to compensate for the inadequate drainage hose became dislodged after my third wash.

Now I wish I had taken the hose from my old Whirlpool and put it on the new Maytag.

I love this washer and the dryer as well the reason this washer is getting bad reviews is old people are used to using energy hogs...and just so you know they sill make them..if you dont like technology dont buy this washer...If you do you will love it. I have two small children and a husband and mine is wonderful, cleans very well mine is quiet. AMAZING. I have never had a single issue with it at all. You can trust it there is no need to peek it does its job and I can gaurntee you that your clothes will be cleaner then ever!

Not that thrilled with this washing machine. A major factor in choosing this 4.0 cu ft washer was so it could handle bigger/heavier loads (comforters/bedding) but the machine's spin cycle is way too sensitive and does not work all the time. I have to take things out move things around and try different spin cycles until that spin cycle works, very aggravating and time consuming. Also noticed fabric softner spots which I think is due to the spin cycle not working properly.
