Great sound quaility!

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

I previously owned a NWZ-A829 and the sound quality was preety good. The only downside that I felt about A829 is that it doesn't not come with the noise cancelling function. When Sony announced new X series, I knew this is something that I'm looking for. The noise cancelling function works great! I am a frequent flyer, and this X-series player has even 3 default setting for noise cancelation - office, bus, and flight. The only thing that it can't compete with A829 is its weight. For a little more increase in weight to get more functions and slick touch screen, I think it's a fair trade-off.

Fantastic MP3 Player

I snapped this up after I read/watched the review for it on [@]. My Zune tanked on me after about two years of literally constant use, and I decided I'd get this instead of waiting for the Zune HD because I absolutely hate the Zune software.I have to say, out of the box the Walkman's been fantastic. It comes fully charged and integrates seamlessly with both WinAmp and windows explorer, and also comes with a sidebar gadget that you can use to sync files, simply by drag-and-dropping them. No problems with Windows 7 compatibility that I can find.The included headphones are far better than the garbage shipping with the iPod and newer Zunes, and the built-in noise canceling works fairly well, though I still prefer the isolation of my SE310s.The sound quality is exceptional, easily the best I personally have come across in a portable device like this. It makes me wonder why they don't offer support for lossless formats, though you'd quickly run out of space if you used, say, FLAC files, especially if you're also storing video on the device.The interface is very well done; everything is very intuitive and there are a variety of ways to navigate through your song collection, all of them easy to manage. There's also an alphabet across the top of the browsing screen than you can drag your finger across, and when you pick a letter it will automatically scroll to that area of the list, whether it be artist, song, album, etc. It works very, very well. Also, the touchscreen is a dream to use.The video support I can see being a bit tricky for some people, since it doesn't include anything like native DivX support which means you'll have to do some converting. It doesn't bug me at all because I just use Badaboom to convert all the video; it's ungodly fast with a CUDA-capable video card compared to using your CPU, so a full length DVD takes maybe 15 minutes versus a couple of hours to convert. One should note there seems to be a 2GB file limit on video files, or at least there is with the mp4 format.Also, there's a really useful feature that displays a slideshow of stills from videos along a set time interval (2 min, 5 min, etc.); all you have to do is scroll through them to the point in the movie you want to watch and then click it. It might sound strange but it works well in practice. Think of it as a chapter selection function.The web browser is absolutely atrocious; if that's a factor in your decision at all, look elsewhere. It really is very poorly designed; you have to type with a bastardized cellphone keypad and predictive text, the application is very slow, the wifi drains the battery like you wouldn't even believe, the list goes on. Best to mark the web feature as unusable. I don't personally care at all, since I'm never far from a computer as a CS major. It's not something I'd use even if it was grade A, so I didn't factor it into my rating.The battery life is fairly good, with around 30 hours of audio and 6-7 hours of video (obviously that varies with brightness settings on the screen).Really the only problems I have with this thing are you can only get up to 32GB of storage with it, which really limits the amount of video you can store on it at a time, and also the proprietary USB plug, which seems all but obligatory these days. Why can't we get a standard mini plug instead?Either way this is an outstanding device, and I certainly recommend it to everyone for whom the web "feature" is not a deal breaker.

The best sounding mp3 player!

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.

Been using it for a week, and its the best mp3 player I have ever used. The screen is brilliant(very responsive) and great for videos. However, only mp4 and wma files are supported for video. Audio quality is great, and the bundled headset is very nice. NOise cancellation works well. Its pretty compact as compared to my ipod touch. The browser supports mobile websites, and could have been better. The youtube integration is good tho. The hardware buttons makes it much easier and practical to use than the itouch. I hihgly recommend this to anyone who wants good audio quality.
