We are in mid 2011, and not earlier than this week I decided to take the step towards the D300s. I have had a D700 for many years, and needed a DX complement for it. Of course, I started with the D7000 - which is a nice camera, but if you are used to the look and depth of RAW results from a D700, and if you are used to the solidity of this FX gem, the D7000 is quite a bit of a let-down. I also did not like the fact that the D7000's 16 MPix sensor (which would be somewhere between 30 and 40 MPix in 35mm format!) on the one hand side would resolve more than older Nikkor lenses (e.g. the 300mm f4) can provide, and on the other hand side, despite this large resolution potential, the D7000 mushes away fine details. (Apart from this, I hated the plug cover on the bottom of the hand grip, which always loses, and I hated the fact that my glasses' frame always got stuck in the frame of the eye piece rubber) Sorry, Nikon. So, I went forward to step into the pro-class again, and bought the D300s. I could not have been happier with its delicious results! Believe me or not, but I think that the D300s files are nices, sharper, and of deeper colors than the D7000's files. I absolutely LOVE my D300s, as I LOVE my D700. These two cameras are meant for each other. The results of both are stunning. And one last comment on the D300s. The web is full of comments that the D300s mushes away details at ISO800 and beyond. This is true when you keep the NR level at default (normal). Simply turn it down by one step, or switch it off completely. Or shoot RAW, as I do. And the D300s will bring out STUNNING details!

I just bought this in March 2014 and I am debating whether I should send it to Nikon for repair or return it to the store. This camera froze on me twice. After the first incident, Nikon Support taught me how to reset it. Few days later, I took it with me on vacation and it happened again. The reset technique did not work. It took more than one day for the camera to come back to normal operation. When it is operating normally, it is a great camera and I enjoy the speed of the camera. So, I am not sure if it is a camera problem or user problem. I own a D80 also and I have not encountered the same problem with D80.

Very Durable

Comments about Nikon D300 Body Digital SLR Camera:

After taking pictures, some friends and I were talking around the bed of my sons truck. I placed my D300S in the bed and forgot I left it there. Minutes after my son took off and miles later, I remembered what I did and immediately called him to tell him to pull over to get the camera. That was in the summer of 2012, It's now 2014 and there is nothing wrong with the camera. I still takes great pictures.

Comments about Nikon D300 Body Digital SLR Camera:

I majored in Photojournalism years ago and learned on a Pentax K1000. I went into another field but wanted a Nikon back then. Recently, I picked up a used D300s with a lens and love it! It may take some time to get used to all of the bells and whistles, but the pictures are sharp. Great camera!

Love it...

Comments about Nikon D300 Body Digital SLR Camera:

I have yet to have a Nikon I do not like but this is one of my favorites. It focuses fast. It has lots of sensitivity for low light and a quick shutter for bright days watching sports. Now that I have a D600 I should give it to my niece but cannot part with it.

Fast, acurate excellent image quality!

Comments about Nikon D300 Body Digital SLR Camera:

I have photographed both sports, landscapes and indoor corporate events with the D300s, panned incoming ski racers just to be impressed with the continuous auto-focus features, shot running water at F22 only to be amazed by the accuracy of the detail in the image, even had the opportunity to run out of memory with a borrowed D4 while shooting a Kayak event, switched the body on the 600mm glass with my D300s and produced equally stunning results. An excellent camera well designed, easy to understand, user friendly with top notch technology. As for it's low light abilities with or without flash it can do the job but a state of the art full frame I believe would give any photographer a comparative advantage.
