I have over 30 years of photography experience, 20+ years in the Darkroom and 30+ years using Nikon. My Mother was a Professional Photographer, as a result the equipment used had to be the best. When I started in photography I used a Nikkormat and I stayed with it for many years. I have also used Nikons FM and FM2 models. With these Cameras, a handful of Glass (Lenses) and a few filters awesome photographs were captured by my family. Nikon has an excellent lineup of DSLR Cameras that a Photographer can use to capture great shots, each with it's good and bad points - which will be different for each photographer. One thing to keep in mind when choosing a camera is that even the most expensive Camera can take a bad photo if it is used improperly. After spending most of my life in film, I decided to venture into the world of digital. Not wanting, or needing, a bunch of fluff I decided to purchase the D3000. This is Nikons lowest priced (at the time I bought it) DSLR camera, but it is what I was looking for - simple, to the point, no fluff, good camera. I use the D3000 typically in one of two modes, Auto and Manual. I use Manual most of the time, but will use Auto for the no brainer snap shoots at kids birthday parties, etc... I have found this camera to take excellent photographs. One of the great features I love about Nikon cameras is that all their cameras have the same lens mount from the beginning (or at least very close to their beginning). As a result, I can turn my D3000 into a FULLY manual camera and use all the lenses I grew up with - all that money spent can still be used - so cool. The D3000 has everything a beginner or experienced photographer needs to capture great photographs and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

I received the nikon d3000 as a gift from my girlfriend over a year ago after showing interest in my sisters photography. She was shooting with a D90 at the time and had taken many classes At the art institue of chicago on photography. When I first got this camera I thought it was absolutely the greatest thing in the world. I took it everywhere with me and took many, many photos. It really was a spectcular camera to own as a beginner. About 6 months into owning it I started to realize some of its limitations. No matter what I did I could not take a good low light photo without having some serious noise issues at higher ISO. I had purchased some lenses that were better suited for low light conditions and it still didn't solve my issue. In some instances you could see a good amount of noise in pretty well lit conditions. Since some of the main subjects I love to shoot are at night or in low light, this camera is becoming more of an inconvenience rather than a joy to work with which is why Im getting rid of it for a D7000. If your looking to buy this camera with a mindset of just taking pictures and aren't looking to further your photography skills then I would say buy it because it's a decent entry level DSLR. Otherwise, don't get it. I would look into a D5000, or the D3100 instead.

Super Tool for Gaining Professional Skills

from Undisclosed

I took up photography when I retired, and got involved with microstock. I soon realized that point-and-shoot cameras would not give me the scope I needed to compete, so started shopping. When I had narrowed my choices to two, I bought the D3000 as the body is slightly smaller than the competitor's similar model, so even my small hands can reach all the buttons. I began by using the fully automatic mode, but have been learning to manage other settings as various challenges arise. I'm now (five years later) confident enough in my skills to start offering my services to the public for head shots and high-school senior portrait sessions. I suppose I will soon be needing another camera just so I have backup equipment, but there are still plenty of features on the D3000 to keep me busy learning new skills. It took almost no time at all to get wonderful images, sharp and clear with great color; first day. It will take quite a while to fully master its capabilities. A superb tool for anyone who wants to grow from casual photographer to professional level.

Extremely good camera, but no video.

from Mississauga, ON, Canada

The camera quality is very good, better than any I've ever had. But since you can't shoot a video with it, I wouldn't recommend it to a friend.

Simple to shoot!

from Dunham, QC, Canada

this is my first more hands on camera then just a simple point and shoot, and i find this camera very easy to use and understand... if your looking for a more updated more hands on camera this is the camera to go with... i use it to photograph my clients and i also use it to have fun with my family its an all in one camera.... i don't take very many videos so this camera dose not have that option which i find i can focus more on picture taking with this camera.

Great starter dslr

from Columbus Oh

I had no clue what type of camera to get when I decided I wanted a DSLR so when I asked at the store where I made my purchase, they said this was the best as a starter camera. I took to it like a duck to water. I've taken thousands of pics and received hundreds of compliments on the professional of my photos. The price was low compared to other name brands and I was also given a 200mm lens as part of a package deal. I'm still learning about the camera and hope to take classes to learn more about photography and make it my new life work.

Entry Level DSLR

from Undisclosed

I bought this camera this year in an effort to deepen my photography skills, (there's only so much you can do with a Point and Shoot). This budget DSLR offers probably the best choice any entry level photographer can have. It's photos are quite good, It's ISO Range and Shutter Speed Range offer a lot of room for young photographers. The truth however is that you will outgrow this camera and opt to buy a more advanced camera that has even better ISO/Shutter Speed. As a beginners camera I wouldn't recommend any other.

Great Starter DSLR!

from Athens, PA, USA

I bought this camera to learn photography with and it has never failed me...ever!! I have traveled frequently with it in cars/trucks and on ATV's!! Great starter DSLR! The options offered are great for learning with as the camera just can't do some things the higher end cropped frame sensor DSLR's can do. It has never failed me. It still works I just upgraded to the 7000 after 2 years owning this I have just out grown it. I keep it as back up equipment and I would still be using it if I didn't purchase a new 7000 recently! GREAT BUY! (Images uploaded were shot by this camera and the stock 18-55mm lens)

I think the D3000 is awesome. I use mine mostly for light graffiti, but I take other pictures too. My camera has great color quality and take it everywhere!

Good but...

from Undisclosed

I like the camera, it has a good weight about it. Really my only complaint is once the camera got a year the pictures lost their vivid contrast and became somewhat grayed out, I adjusted the settings so maybe that is a "user error" Other than that it is a GREAT camera.

Excellent starter for old film camera buff

from San Jose, CA, USA

My first DSLR is D3000 bundled with 18-55 and 55-200 ED lenses (non VR). Previous film cameras Nikon FG and 8008s. Previous digital cameras were point and shoot or phone cameras. D3000 is great introduction to digital SLR photography. Very glad to have control of exposure again, which P&S cameras didn't have. Lack of video not critical. Lack of Live View ok as I prefer using a viewfinder, especially in bright daylight.
