This is my first eReader, so I have nothing else to compare it to. I can say as a first time user I am incredibly impressed overall. I love having the option to use the touchscreen/stylus if so desired. I have found myself using the page turn buttons at the bottom more often, though. I am a reader who always held my books from the bottom so this is very natural for me. I appreciate the fact that I no longer need to use both hands, but can do everything with the one holding the eReader. More often than not when I sit down to read one of my feline friends ends up in my lap, so now I have at least one hand free. Double tap in the top right corner to bookmark your page...double tap on a word while reading and the dictionary definition pops up at the bottom of your screen. All very handy, and very easy to figure out. I am a reader with progressive lenses. For years it has become increasingly difficult for me to read for long periods of time without significant eyestrain. Those days are over. I read for at least 8 hours straight, and at varying distances with zero eyestrain. This is the first time that has happened in more years than I care to remember. I highly recommend purchasing an eReader cover with your device. It made it feel more natural (book like) and not so 'exposed'. It feels as though it is more protected inside that cover as far as the touch screen is concerned. I say all the way around this is definitely one of the best investments I have ever made as a book lover, and would highly recommend without reservation to anyone else.

The fact that you need to install and use a special application (and it is REALLY stupid application) just to copy ebooks to the reader is a ridiculously stupid design decision. Why can't they just have the reader appear as a USB storage device so you can just file-copy ebooks to it without having to install a load of bloatware on your PC? Whats even more ridiculous is that Sony think every PC onwer in the world is only running Microsoft Windows, so they only provide a Windows version of the application. Consequently if you're smart enough to avoid Windows and run another OS like Linux or BSD, you will have no way to copy ebooks or music to this reader, which makes it totally useless for a significant number of potential customers.

prs-600 reader touch

Comments about Sony PRS-600 Silver Touch Edition 6" Digital Reader:
I like it, Wife has the newer prs-950 and the screen is better than the 600, but not that much better than the 600

Decent Device, Horrible Software
from Madison, WI
Nothing good about this device can overcome my disgust with the software. I'm afraid to hook it up to my computer because it will either hang indefinitely or delete my purchased books from the reader. The only way I can get this to work semi-reliably is to put epub books from other sources on an SD card and remove the card whenever I connect to the computer while allowing only purchased books to sync up via the menus. Stay away if you are not computer savvy!
Older PRS-600 still a champ
I recently acquired a PRS-600. It is a very nice reader in good light. The cover/light combo needs a much brighter LED to be really useful for reading in the dark. I prefer to use a headlamp for more light.
Almost but missed
from Sydney, Australia
I enjoyed the experience for about 6 months, despite poor quality (or dated) software and re-charge only through your computer (and unable to use the device during recharge). Then I started to get intermittent screen failure, just half the screen. Now just over 12 months of ownership, it's failed.
Best Gift Ever
from Shortsville, NY
I was given a PRS-600 for my birthday this past month and I absolutely love this reader. I read all the time and was getting frustrated having to carry books around all the time because I read multiple books at a time. This reader is wonderful. It's crisp, clear images make it easy to read, the text size is perfect and variable. I don't get a glare on my screen. The touch feature comes with a stylus but I find I rarely have to use it as it responds very well and quickly to my fingertips. I love that it has an expandable memory because I can carry hundreds of books, music, pictures, and notes with me no matter where I go. This is the best gift I've ever been given and I thank my fiance every day! Thank you Jim and thank you Sony!

this ereader is your typical ereader except after I bought it and started using it I discovered you can only charge it through the computer. So if you go on a trip and don't bring your computer forget charging. The battery doesn't last but a couple hours so for long drives its useless. There is a wall charger you can buy but look closely, it doesn't work with the prs-600!!!! I will never buy another sony because of this major inconvenience!
The text contrast (black) ...
The text contrast (black) on the grey glare screen is bad - do not by this model!!I am going smash this reader in the face of Sony guys!

Very happy with getting it so soon, am now chanrging the reader up before I use it.
Great practical reader, still room for improvement
I have had and used PRS600 for ~ a month, here's what I found, hope that Sony will make improvements for better reader.Currently pros:1) NO Internet access: I don't care about Wifi or 3G access, when I read my books I prefer the world leaves me be. I only need easy access to get books to my personal "vault", then easily load books from the vault to the reader which currently is the case with PRS600.2) Library and collections: I have tried Nook, when books come in multiple pdf chapters Nook spread the chapters out as single file. EReader allows to group all files/chapters of a book in separate "collection".3) Expanded memory: PRS600 comes with ~300Mb memory. I have some 10 books that fill up 250Mb already. Therefore the expanded card slots are essential (I think this expandable memory capability is essential no matter how big the built-in storage.)4) Taking note function is great: nearly the same as when I read hard copy: I can take note by highlight, write, and then look for them later easily from a list of notes which the reader then brings back to the original page (with a hard copy I flip the pages to look for my notes, or use sticky). This is very practical and useful which none other reader can do.5) great practical design: simple and functional, easy to use buttons, double tab for dictionary, for taking notes, menus are intuitive, easy to navigate.6) pdf readability: here PRS600 is great, it has option to change font size (reflow, BTW, I dont need tons of fancy fonts, only a few essential fonts that are best for reading on screen), or to zoom. I have technical pdf docs that have complex formatting, with single and two columns on same page, with graphs, tables, chemical structures, biological schemes, subscript, superscripts, etc., which are completely messed up on other readers of the same size, but can be read using the zoom function (instead of changing font size) on the PRS600.7) Sony support is great: everything is online, a little tortuous to find them but they are there and very very helpful in helping users to use the reader and trouble shoots and solutions.....
