A main reason that I bought the new refrigerator is for the freezer being on the bottom =- I previously had a standard top-freezer 22 ft. unit. The French doors are wonderful -- the space is a bit tight in front of the fridge and access is so much easier. The freezer drawer looks huge and is more accessible with the sliding racks. However, I was shocked when I couldn't fit everything I had in the old top freezer (which looked so small) into this big drawer. There are two reasons -- the back of the freezing compartment is curved in (covering parts of the machinery) which takes a lot of space out. Secondly, an ice maker takes up a large amount of space. I have no intention of connecting the ice maker to a water supply, so have absolutely no need for it. However, it cannot be removed and is a barrier to full use of the potential space. Now that I've reduced the amount of food (and extra bread!) that I keep in the fridge it's working out.

I purchased this product about 4 years ago. Initially was very pleased with the look and its performance. However after four years problems have started to show and I am very displeased with this refrigerator. I have been having trouble with water pooling on my floor, at first I didn't think much of it, just mopped it up and thought that was that. However, this problem has gotten way worse where the pooling of water is so extensive and constant, that I have to have towels and paper towels laying on the floor outside my refrigerator as the amount of water coming out is unbelievable. I went into my basement yesterday to get something, nothing related to this, and I noted a puddle on the basement floor and as I looked up water was leaking, from the exact area that the upstairs refrigerator is located. I cannot seem to keep items frozen in the freezer despite having it on the coldest setting and a few times there has been ice in beverages in the fridge portion. So not only am I frustrated that the refrigerator/freezer are not working properly but it has not started to wreck my house also when then water has penetrated down into the basement. As I looked on the internet to see if this was a problem only I was having, I was appalled to see the amount of individuals that this was happening to. I bought this Whirlpool gold refrigerator as I thought I was getting a good product but I am very disappointed that with all the reviews I read that a recall has not been issued for this problem. I will be calling Whirlpool tomorrow to see what they say. I know I am past the warranty date but I hope they are willing to stand by their product and provide customer service that would help a dissatisfied individual fix the issue at hand. I will write back with another review after I have spoken with them so I can also let you know how helpful or not helpful their customer service is.

FRIDGE HAS BEEN TROUBLE SINCE DAY 1
By Unhappy Customer
from Binghamton NY
We bought this product in 2010 and have nothing but problems with it since day 1. First problem was motor, it burned out. That had to be replaced. Then the arm in the ice maker breaks 2 x, that had to be replaced. Now, the fridge part does not keep cold. We have to take all the food out and let the freeze defrost. This has happened about 5 x now. The fridge (top part) doors seem to be hot too. I would not recommend a Whirlpool or Maytag product EVER.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

We have this product for three years. Started from few weeks ago, the ice is formed at the bottom on the freezer floor and water drain out on to the floor every few days. I trusted this Gold name.

Whirlpool Model GX2FHDXVA03
from Buffalo, NY
Unit is approx 3-4 years old; for the last year the freezer has been collecting water on the floor of the freezer drawer that needs to be chipped out every 2 weeks or water will drain out on to the floor. Not the refrigerator will not cool properly (too warm). If you empty the unit and shut off for 24-36 hours unit will cool properly for about 10-14 days then repeats cooling issue. I still have our old Kenmore refrigerator in the basement (about 15 years old); and it still runs like a charm. After seeing these reviews it appears I was a fool to trust the Whirlpool name. Never again...fool me once.

I bought this 4 years ago as a dream!! My old one was loud and too small. My husband passed away and I was fortunate to have some insurance money for new appliances. I loved it the moment it was plugged in and quiet. Wow! Technology!! Then within a couple of months the ice started forming. I always assume it's my fault. So I would just get down on my hands and knees like a contortionist and chip away. For the last 4 years!!! I guess you could chalk it up to grief, it does terrible things to a person. Anyway, just getting around to looking it up. I am NOT the only one!!! How about that? What I would like to know is if I get this fixed will it stop? Or buy a new non Whirlpool(my parents always said "buy Whirlpool"!!!??? I am nearly 63 and getting too old to be chipping out the ice. Help please!!! P.S. I think my electric bill is running really high because of this...it makes sense. I won't say I would never buy another Whirlpool. I would like to see if there is a response to this problem from the company.
How Can I Fix the Freezer Leak Problem?
By Guitar Guy

We really like this unit--except that several months ago, water started leaking from the freezer onto the wood floor. Apparently there's no drain/drain pan?I've heard Whirlpool will provide something to fix the leaking. How can we get that?
This refrigerator is a nightmare!
from New Jersey
We've had this refrigerator for 4 years and have had so many problems with it. It seems that after the first year now every few months the refrigerator just stops staying cool. We have to empty it out and live out of a cooler for a few days until it starts working again. We've had the motherboard switch replaced but it keeps happening. On top of this, every few weeks we find a puddle on the floor of the kitchen because the freezer freezes up all over the walls and floor and water leaks out. We've lost so much food because of this and I am so frustrated especially since I emailed Whirlpool Gold about this and never heard back. My other appliances are Whirlpool Gold and they're fine but I feel like we got a lemon of a refrigerator and it's costing so much money. No wonder why this product has been discontinued!
Defroster issue; noisy
from Bucks County PA
Refrigerator is three years old. As noted by other(s), there is an issue with the defroster drain getting clogged causing ice to form on the freezer floor. I had mine repaired today at a cost of $250 + tax. The repairman said this is a common problem with this model. I have never neeed a repair with any other refirgerator I have owned and will think twice about purchasing Whirlpool products in the future. In addition, as also noted by other(s), the unit is quite noisy. I am hoping there was a connection between the defroster issue and the noise and that both problems have been resolved but I will not hold my breath on that one.

Buyer beware of freezer problem!
By betsy ross
from Philadelphia, PA
Water accumulates on freezer floor. Company provides a fix kit only when you call for it. Labor and installation is on your dollar, supposedly up to $100, but repairers actual charge is $200. Whirlpool does not reimburse you. Otherwise a good unit.
