Our previous model was a KHHC2090S which had a 16" interior depth, #I think# true powel levels, a menu driven touchscreen and a ton of features. Unfortunately, it had ventillation issues and was discontinued. The 1857 is the nearest existing mate to our Architect series II range. It looks beautiful. Fit and finish is top notch. The door closes with the precision of a Mercedes. However, the electronics are like something out of the '80s. Power levels are created by the hard cycling of the magnetron, just like any other microwave you can pick up at Walmart for $50. For $700 I expect inverter technology. Relays click and clack in an age when quiet solid state relays #SCR's# could be subtituted for only a few dollars more. Menus are old school fluorescent display with very slow scrolling. The convection feature does not overheat the side of the unit as bad as on the old one. So, you can effectively bake with the thing. Overall, I feel the $700 went mostly to style, but it does look good when showing off the kitchen. Absolutely not a value.

This microwave cooks very well. The convection feature also works very well and I am pleased with that. However, these "pros" are overshadowed by the "cons"....the wording on the display panel is pretty small. I didn't realize it until I found myself having to squint to read it. If you are at the stage where you are just beginning to need "cheaters" to read, this is not the oven for you. The fan that comes on during the convection feature is loud. Very loud. I had it replaced, twice, and the technician acknowledged that the design is poor. I saw it myself while he was fixing it - it looked like my sister's Easy Bake Oven when we were kids, with the belt drive mechanism that ran the fan. Surprised this ever passed a quality inspection of any sort. I would expect that level of quality if this was a Wal-mart special, not for a name brand like Kitchenaid. If I had to do over, I wouldn't buy this product. I had a GE before this that had similar features but was clearly better engineered. I won't be a repeat customer. Oh yeah, I checked the reviews on similar microwave/convection in the Whirlpool brand (same family/company), and there is no difference.

Awesome little oven
from Clinton, TN, United States
I purchased this to use on a daily basis to cook and bake meals. I was very skeptical thinking it wouldn't meet my expectations since it was a microwave and convection oven combined. I'm pleased to say that it works wonderfully.
Great value. Works well. Looks good !

We were attracted to this unit when it was offered at a great price. We are experienced with similar units in our RV and summer cabin. This unit works very well. It was easy to rotate the blower for rear exhaust. We are very satisfied and it looks good in the kitchen. We have had a programming issue or two.
My wife's new microwave

I bought this microwave to replace an older KitchenAid unit that was about 7 years old. Got a great price on this and it was installed within 2 days. Love the microwave. You can cook food in many more ways than the old one. Haven't tried too many things, but used it for baked potatoes twice and it works great. Looking forward to cooking something more complicated in the future.

I can't stand this microwave

I inherited this microwave in the house I bought, and after living here for less than 3 months I am replacing it. The "sensor" cooking for reheat, potato, etc. are AWFUL. I put in two potatoes and as I was preparing the rest of the meal I was waiting to hear the microwave beep that the potatoes were done - that's part of the point of sensor cooking, that the microwave takes care of the work and I don't have to think about it. About 10 MINUTES later, the potatoes were still cooking!! I opened the door to find two potatoes turned into hockey pucks. Same with Reheat - it overcooks EVERYTHING, to the point that I don't use the Reheat "feature" any more. And it drives me NUTS that at the end of cooking time it doesn't just revert back to the clock, it always asks to "add more time." I wish you could turn this off, but doesn't matter - I will be VERY HAPPY to replace this with a GE in the next 2 weeks. This microwave is the worst ever.

I bought this microwave about a month ago and absolutely LOVE it! The features are fantastic, it is quiet and stays clean easily.
quiet, nice size, good power
We purchased this in late March 2014. Nice appliance. We don't like that there isn't a way to pause cooking...like a 'stop' button. The only way to do so is to open the door while running, which seems hard on the motor. Overall, this is a great purchase.

Purchase was made so we could have a vented to the outside exhaust fan. This unit does not cut it! The exhaust fan will BARELY hold a half sheet of paper towel up at the exhaust vent AND makes 10x's more noise than our old microwave. The 4 fan speeds are a joke, there is a slight difference in speed between high and low but the 2 speeds in the middle are the same as high with a added hummm noise.
This product does so many things

I have used my microwave as a steamer for veggies and they turn out absolutely delicious and to perfection each time. In addition I use the microwave as a second oven for entertaining and cooking for larger group. The convection cooks evenly and the foods come out as in a normal bake oven, but in a shorter amount of time. Love, love this feature. I can entertain 20-25 people with the use of this as a second oven. Of course utilizing the microwave as just as microwave works very well but I love the steamer and convection bake features this product provides!
