Sony PRS900: NICE, but needs improvement
Reviewed by JNYC (Frequent Traveler, SONY LOVER, Engineer, Student, Gearhead) from New York, NY on Jan 05, 2011

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I predominantly use it to store reference PDFs and PDF Books. I also like making Notes and Drawings. The Mp3 player and Audio book option is great. The Reader could use a lot of improvement: - The NY Times downloads are not the same as buying a real newspaper. The Articles seem edited down or stripped-down (minimal). -If your Reader isn't on with 3G for a day or 2 you don't get the Newspaper downloaded for those missed days (I think it will only download the previous day's Paper but nothing older that is missing). - It's hard to navigate when reading the times and some Books. - The battery dies quickly when the 3G is left on. - The Reader tends to lockup when you power it up, which needs to be reset a few times, especially during and after a download. - The touch screen sometimes makes weird vertical lines when drawing something. - Background of the screen is dark which gives you a poor Contrast to the Lettering.. not as Black and White as a real Book. I'd look into Apples' iPad but I hate MONOPOLIES. I'm sure there are a lot of restrictions with the iPad as well as a poor battery life.. I will wait and see what is developed. I would buy it with a 30 day money back Guarantee and return it if you don't like it. Ahh... PAPER! Nothing will replace a GOOD REAL BOOK!
Cons: Anomolies when drawing, NYTIMES downloads suck, No Color pictures, The system freezes A LOT, Contrast is poor, No security, Background is Dark, Short Battery Life, Zoom Feature is oldschool, Glitchy Touch Screen, Cannot Rename Files, Books are expensive, Battery Dies quick w3G, Complicated Controls, Cannot Sort-Custom View, Newspaper DL are limited, SLOW to react at times, BookNames rely on MetaTag
Best Uses: Researching a Book, Organize Book Collection, Travel, Drawing, Boomarking book sections, Searching Terms and Words, Daily Use, Making lists, Home Use, Bookmarking Newspapers, Commuting, Consolidate Books into 1, Jotting down Ideas
Pros: SD CARD ProDuo Slot, Good Sound Quality, Load up any PDF, It's a Sony, Highlight Bookmarking, Lightweight, FREE 3G service downloads, Really cool Note Taking, Powerful, Bookmark Lists, Durable, Bulky but safe TravelCase

I've really enjoyed the reader

Overall, I enjoy the reader and would purchase again, two improvements I would like to see in future versions are: 1) adding a clock, 2) brighter screen, I'm not sure if that is the correct term, but lighting placement is critical.
Best Uses: Home Use, Travel, Commuting, Daily Use
Pros: Lightweight, Easy Controls, Long Battery Life

Intuitive and easy to use
Reviewed by Quig (Practical) from Lansdale, PA on Mar 22, 2010

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
I owned a Kindle for a day...and sent it back -- kludge software, non-intuitive controls (slidebar instead of a joystick, no touch screen control), etc. etc. On the other hand, I find the operation of the Sony Reader almost completely intuitive. The touch screen works perfectly for turning pages and other operations. Books download almost instantly and the Reader holds your place in each book you are reading and unlike the Kindle which shows area, the Sony shows the real page number. I like, for example, the option of seeing either the single entry or the whole page in the dictionary when you double tap a word. The one problem of course with all these readers is screen reflection and glare. But it's rather easy to turn it slightly to eliminate most of this. At first I hated the gray background in all these readers but in using the Sony I find that this appears to be easier on the eyes. All in all I love this little Reader; however, I wish the price had been more reasonable.
Pros: Durable, Long Battery Life, Easy Controls
Best Uses: Travel, Commuting, Home Use, Daily Use

Wonderful size, weight and design with built in cover. Touch screen works well, but returned because screen difficult to read. Will purchase again when contrast imporved. Also, why can't it access the general Internet for more than purchasing books?

Cons: Screen quality poor

We are all accustomed to computer screens which are back lighted and difficult on eye strain. Ereader screens fortunately are easy on the eyes. [...] Because Sony sells a double LED light with special cover it provides adequate light in low ambient light conditions but should be brighter. Use of accessory type "Mighty Brights" is ok but inconvenient and the clip-ons over-weight and unbalance the ereader.
Pros: Great Interface, Sony has accessory LED, Improves Functionality, But LED only barely ok, Lightweight, Durable, Easy To Use, Need good ambient light
Cons: LED good for low light, Need to get LED, Dark screen but print ok
Best Uses: Travel, Daily Usage, Home Use

The PC sync software is easy to use, but crashed on my PC. Had to reinstall on another computer because the reloading attempts were unsccessful. Good screen size, very thin and light weight. Beats carrying a bunch of books around. Pretty much like having your library with you all the time. Like the ability to purchase wirelessly and with PC interface. Wish it had a web browser.
Pros: Great for taveling, Compact, East to add books, Easy To Use, Lightweight
Cons: Sync software issues, Occasionally locks up

This is my first eReader so not too much to compare to. Pros: -Easy to use, read, navigate, get books etc. -Love getting free, just released eBooks from my library (can't do that w/ Kindle), buying books is cheap too -Note taking and highlighting is great -Battery life is good -Comes with cover, travel case and A/C charger (need to pay for all of those with other eReaders) Cons: -The screen is a little shiny, but it has not been a big problem -3G connection is not fast, but not too slow -No magazines on Sony Reader Store
