iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot - 76817

Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robots are designed especially for the hairy situations that pet owners face. The Roomba systematically cleans up to four rooms on a single charge and gets into hard-to-reach areas like wall edges and beneath furniture while avoiding stairs and other drop-offs. Roomba automatically adjusts from carpets to hard floors and back again. When the cleaning is complete, or if the battery is running low, Roomba returns to its compact Home Base to dock and recharge. Two interchangeable cleaning bins - a Vacuuming Bin and a High Capacity Sweeper Bin - provide the option for everyday vacuuming or heavy duty cleaning in hairier, dirtier, high-traffic areas. A Replacement Brush Kit - an extra Bristle Brush, an extra Beater Brush and an extra Sidebrush - allows for easy replacement and cleaning of the brushes. Using clean, hair-free brushes ensures that Roomba always cleans at peak performance. Two brush cleaning tools - a cylindrical tool and a bladed comb - provide fast and efficient removal of hair and debris from Roomba's brushes. Two replacement filters help trap dirt, dust and dander inside the robot.

Features:

Standard Features

  • Vacuums dirt, debris, pet hair, dust, allergens and more from carpets and hard floors
  • Counter rotating Bristle Brush and Beater Brush work together like a dustpan and broom
  • Sturdy Bristle Brush digs deep into carpet fibers to grab dirt, debris, pet hair and more
  • Powerful vacuum sucks large and small debris into the large, bag-less bin
  • Fine filter traps dust, pollen and tiny particulate inside the bin
  • Cleans the whole floor, under and around furniture, into corners and along wall edges
  • Detects dirtier areas and spends more time cleaning them
  • Spot Clean provides quick clean-up of spills and concentrated messes
  • Automatically senses and avoids stairs and other drop-offs

I bought two Roomba 562 Pet Series robots, one for upstairs and one for downstairs. I hate lugging the vacuum cleaner around the house, and we have too much furniture and "things" on the floors, so vacuuming is a REAL chore. My Roomba's are a blessing.

I live in an old house where electrical outlets are a rarity and we have to use extension cords and power strips everywhere. I don't have optimal spaces for the docking stations, but so far it's working pretty well. Roomba 1 has a little trouble getting out of and into its space sometimes because it's tucked into a corner.

I have not yet programmed a schedule, because it's simple to decide when Roomba should work and punch its button, so that particular feature is not so important to me.

I'm also not overly concerned about Roomba's inability to vacuum in the small spaces because it's just so nice to have the main floor clean with not too much effort. You do need to clean the brushes, bearings and especially the spindles fairly frequently, but I feel it's a small price to pay. Besides, it's easier than cleaning a regular vacuum's brush and dealing with belts. No screwdriver needed!

I just allowed Roomba 2 out of my room today to clean the linoleum, and although it does have a sensitive bumper, it DID bump the animals' water dish enough to spill it. Luckily I was right there to wipe it up so as not to harm Roomba. They're not supposed to be subjected to liquids.

I love these things so much that I hope they last a long time. I worry about overworking them! I think iRobot should work next on some Baby Roomba's that can get into the small spaces.

Be warned that when your Roomba's are new, they will not be a time-saver because you spend your time just watching them work! It couldn't just be me, could it?

P.S. I was just about to submit this review when Roomba 2's right wheel became stuck. There is nothing in the manual that tells how to fix this, so a call into service is in the immediate future. I've been using the robot for about two weeks every other day or so.

This is a step by step experience analysis. We are a working couple with 1 - 80 lb Pure bred German Shepherd. Normally the house is vacuumed once a week. Purchased Roomba for use on the main floor - 250 SqFt short hair carpet, 150 SqFt Linoleum, small hall. Purpose of the unit was to keep the kitchen free of fur as we are getting a second LARGE dog soon.

- Purchases Feb 27/2010. Roomba 565 Pet series.
- Same day, after it indicated it was fully charged we set it loose to test its limits.
- Within 1 hour it was stopped and complaining for brush attention so we cleaned it and decided try giving it a pre-cleaned room to maintain. We put it back on charge.

Feb 28/2010
- The entire floor was vacuumed with our Dyson Pet-vac.
- Immediately the unit was set loose to clean and it began picking up material the Dyson didn't!!
- Immediately the unit began collecting fur on the OUTSIDE of the unit as a static charge built on the plastic body. This fur would be dumped in the kitchen when the unit bumped into metal objects causing it to loose static charge.
- As it traveled over the carpet, it would randomly dump clumps of the fur it collected in a trail behind it. The fur wasn't being fully deposited in the collection bin but rather collected in the space between the brushes & bin with the excess being shoved back into the bin and some falling to the floor.
- Let the unit run its full cycle and then began the clean up.
- The machine collected about a palm full of material which I could squeeze down much smaller.
- Roughly another 15% of the quantity that stayed in the machine, was spread out on the floor in clump trails.
- The kitchen, previously fur free, now had whisps of fur all off the floor that had fallen off the machine. They were too light to sweep and needed to be picked up by hand (I shoulda thought to vacuum them up)
- Another 5% of the collected material was wrapped around the axles of the brush and beater bar and spread out on the brush itself.

March 1st/ 2010
- 3AM - The unit was scheduled to run which it did to its end. I woke, cleaned roughly the same amount of material from the machine as before both in the collection bin and off the brushes. I also had to clean up sporadic debris trails.

March 1st/2010
- 1PM - The unit was set loose again through and complete cleaning cycle. Again the same quantity of fur was collected and a similar mess was made. It does occasionally go over areas where it dumped, again and clean some of it up.
- Once again, the unit entered the kitchen littered with fur clinging to its plastic shell which it began dumping after it bumped the fridge (A metal ground source that absorbed the static)

The unit is generally unremarkable. It has 4 bottom sensors that help it detect stairs and dirt, sensors in its front bumper to allow it to detect come objects and the bumper itself. Other than that its a basic turtle type robot that finds it way around by aimlessly wondering around until it bumps into things.
Being a programmer I was able to detect and admire some of the intelligent coding that was used to help it track baseboards and find its way out of tight spots but also disappointed that no effort was made to allow the unit to learn the terrain from all that bumping around.
The unit has static problems and with all the plastic and brushes running against the carpet, it quickly starts looking like a dog itself. The static problems seem to be what prevents the fur from being pushed well into the debris bin and thus results in collection and entanglement in and around the brush as well as the sporadic dumping. The process I had to go through with each cleaning made me feel like a university student caring for a prototype.

We will be restricting it to the 150 Sqft kitchen floor as it is still too far in the development stages for anything beyond that.

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

We couldn't keep up with the Golden Retriever hair. It was always all over the tile. We live in South Florida and a lot of our floor is tile. When we first started to use "Chomp" we couldn't get over the amount of ground in dog hair and dirt that was being removed from the carpet. And I had been using an Electrolux upright on the carpets. For the first week we had it, we ran it on the carpets every day. The carpets feel clean and look so much newer. The plush look is back. The house feels so much cleaner. We no longer have the film of yellow dog hair on the tile. Not to have to take the time to vacuum is amazing especially since vacuuming made my back hurt. It does require maintenance. The robot has to be cleaned often, but that it easy. Cleaning it takes a fraction of the time it did to vacuum. We debated whether to get the 562 or the 572 because the 572 has two bins. We got the 562. The second bin wouldn't have mattered as far as the dog hair goes because it is the brush that gets filled up with the hair that has to be removed. Chomp is much quiter than any standard vacuum. You can do just about anything while it is running and the sound level is ok. In addition to using it during the day, we program it to run at night after we go to bed. It is so amazing to have clean floors and not to have to spend the time vacuuming. When these first came on the market I thought they were not a serious appliance. Now if they can just invent an irobot to do the dusting!

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

I've had it for about 5 months. I love it, but there are some cons. It eats up the fringe on my rugs and it doesn't do a good job cleaning along the edge of the rug, where the rug meets the hard wood floors. But, on the plus side, my floors have never been so clean, because I hated vacuuming, so I never did it. Now, every room gets done at least once a week. So, I love my Rosie.

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

Have had this roomba for over a year and still LOVE IT.
Advice - BUY YOURSELF a LARGE SEAM RIPPER from a fabric store. The seam ripper is a perfect cleaning tool for the brushes.
I bought the pet series because of 2 cats, but mostly use the smaller bin - found the pet bin doesn't have the DUST FILTER! Works great with the regular bin. Picks up more dust and debris than I would have ever imagined. Frightening to see how much dirt and dust is on the floor and carpets after only a few days. I have always been lazy about vacuuming, and having Roomba lets me be lazy AND have a clean floor.
Con - After a year, the battery is not holding it's charge as long. I used to be able to vacuum most of our small house 1200sq ft on one charge. Now I have to recharge midway. Still, its WONDERFUL, MARVELOUS, AND DELIGHTFUL and I am planning to get another for my office.
We bought stock in iRobot - I believe this company is going places!

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

I can't imagine what I would do without it. I have dark hardwood floors in all my common areas, and three WHITE pets (2 cats and a dog), before I bought Pimento, I was using the swiffer sweeper every night, every night!
Now I have it set to go off at 2pm daily and my house looks great.
I only use Pimento in the common areas (which includes large area rugs), and use my Dyson pet hair vacuum on the bedrooms once a week.

I have 2 complaints (but I think both are not fixable):
        1. Sometime I find it tangled in something, a small rug, or once a low hanging curtain ( I don't know how that happened)- and becuase of that it doesn't finish and it actually burned up one of the brushes since it didn't stop itself.
        2. I have to remember to clean it out every day, if I don't it won't clean during it's scheduled time. it will start and then give up.

Still, one of the best purchases I ever made!

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

We had two robots for two large floors of our home and they have been doing a great job for four years now. I only had to change the batteries about once per year and a few parts. There are things that can be said but nothing is perfect and in four years I am positive there would be more improvements. I love them soo much that I am afraid to go to new robots as long as these two are still doing the job. Being kind of a clean freak I consider the Roombas the most helpful devices we have around the house and we have many gadgets.

Only fro some reason this model do not have compatible lighthouse and I would love to use one. I got so exited that I was planing to buy scuba but it require different virtual wall and then it would look "funny" with these contraptions all over my floor.

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

Recently bought the Roomba, tried it for three weeks, overall it's great if you want to steal a little break or your are just too tired to lift a limb, but it's definitely not for people looking to replace traditional vacuuming

Human hair: hair gets stuck on both the main brush and side brush, iRobot gives you a cleaning tool for main brush, not the side. The side brush does such a fantastic job spinning all your hair in circling them around the base of side brush, it's a pain trying to remove them. I'd also rather not deal with hair tangled in dirt, dust and all the unknown things I was trying to remove in the first place with the Roomba.

Pet hair: I have two cats, Roomba can't keep up with cat's hair and randomly leaves balls of hair around the apartment which I have to pick up after he returns to base to recharge. He puts me to work while he rejuvenates.

Getting around: I have a lot of small/low furnitures thus lots of corners around my apt. Due to all the corners and things he bumps into, it takes him much longer to cover all areas, sometimes he doesn't even go over some of the areas at all. Roomba also from time to time goes into death match with my furnitures when he think he can fit under but he really can't and I have to step in to save him so he can stop making awful loud struggling noises.

The one feature that I liked about Roomba is probably the spot clean function, saves the hassle of breaking out a traditional vacuum for one spot. Although it's never 100% clean with Roomba.

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

[...].We just tested it in the living room and in the kitchen (on the hard floor) and were fascinated. It did not get stuck, not even once. In the end it navigated its way from the living room back to the base in the kitchen! The floor was recently cleaned, and Roomba still picked up a lot of dirt and white tiles in the kitchen looked so clean as if I had washed them! We have a dog and a baby, so we needed something that would eliminated the need for me to daily clean all floors. Of course, Roomba is somewhat big in diameter to get in all places between the furniture, and while it could go under our coffee table it was still too high to get under the sofa. It reached well under most of the kitchen counters, there were just some spots where Roomba could not get in deep enough (the brushes could not reach and Roomba's "body" was too high). We have a medium size house and kitchen and living room are large. Roomba was able to clean it all, and the bathroom on one charge with no problems. I wish we would not have to clean the Roomba after each cycle, but I guess it is as good as it gets. When opened for cleaning: the air filter compartment was full of dust, the vacuum bin was half full, and the brushes were fine even without cleaning. It is a great product for daily cleaning. You still would have to clean once week to reach in those spots, where Roomba could not.It comes with virtual walls, not the lighthouses. To me - I see no need in the virtual walls - if you want to block the room - just close the door, and I miss the lighthouse functionality of programming Roomba to finish one room before going on to the next one. You can get it in the 572 model, but it is even more expensive, so we chose to stick with the 562.Overall, I am very impressed and regret that it took us so long to make up the mind to buy this thing. Now we just need to budget for a washing irobot, though I think it cannot reach into as many spots as Roomba, so it would not be able to eliminate the need for me to wash the floors. We considered just buying Scooba, because it could do both get the dust and wash the floors but opted for Roomba in the end because Roomba can reach into more corners and appears to clean more thoroughly. The test run was great, we'll see if it continues to work flawlessly.

Comments about iRobot Roomba Pet Series Vacuum Cleaning Robot:

I've had the Pet Series Roomba for about 2 1/2 years. The first one I received was a Christmas gift in 2008. This one was great! It would run every day and clean hardwood floors and the carpet very well. I loved it, until it started acting weird. It would get clogged very easily and I would have to clean it every day. The brushes finally just stopped working. I called and complained and got a replacement Pet series Roomba. What a horrible replacement this one was!!! The transition from the area rug to the hardwood floor was horrible! It leaves such a mess behind that every day, after the Roomba runs, I still have to vacuum. I called and had this replacement Roomba replaced and still having the same issues. I'm so annoyed at this newer replacement that I don't even want it any more. I paid [$] for this thing and feel like I just flushed my money down the toilet. Currently I'm on my 2nd replacement pet series Roomba and just completely frustrated and done. The newest issue is that it doesn't even pick up the animal hair off the area rug!!! Are you serious! I got this PET SERIES ROOMBA for the animal hair that it can't even pick up off the rug. I'm so beyond frustrated with this machine. I'm so mad that the original one doesn't work cause that was the best product thus far.
