Pros: Excellent video quality, outstanding zoom capabilities, Cons: For the price, this camera should be at least a 12MP camera, bulky for a point and shoot camera. Video is in .MOV format only, not easily compatible with older computers and software. Background: I've used in the past the Nikon Coolpix S6000 (at 14.2MP), the L12 (at 7.1 MP) and another Coolpix at 3.1 MP for which I can't remember the model. All excellent cameras that lead me to the P100. Main reason for selecting the P100 was the 1080p video capability while still producing pictures with high MP. I'm just a normal dad and fisherman who wants memories of decent quality considering today's technological advancement in photo and video. I got the camera 3+ months ago and since then has been used for family gatherings and a fishing trip as well as many experimenting pictures. In summary, this is what I can say about the camera. I like its video capabilities more than I do its pictures. I have taken many pictures and I still haven't come up with the bright, crisp pictures that my previous Nikon's used to produce. The video is outstanding and so is the zooming. You can take pictures and video from subjects really far from you and get decent results. This a good compromise between video and picture capabilities from the same device. But if you make a living out of your camera, then you probably already know this not the right camera for you. If you just want to have decent video and pictures without the expense of 2 pieces of equipment, this might be a good camera for you. Then again, so is something like the S6000. The advantage you'd get from the P100 is then the zoom and 1080p stereo video. I have read many negative comments from people dissatisfied with this camera. What I've noticed is that a lot of those are disappointed that they're not getting DSLR quality out of the P100. Well, the P100 is NOT a DSLR, it looks like one, but it's essentially a point and shoot for the common folk, hence the disconnect between expectation and delivery. Being overly happy with the results of the camera, my only suggestion for Nikon would be to revise the MP in the pictures to maybe 12MP. Also, the camera produces inconsistent picture files in size. Some can be 3MB while others can go to 4.7MB or 2MB. The S6000 almost always produced files of about 2.7MB in daylight illuminated conditions.

Had this camera for about a year. This camera incorporates many features. The 26x optical zoom was one of the main reasons why I bought this camera, however, some of the other features had problems that make it an unreliable camera. Auto focus is not reliable, a sharp focus of subject being photographed is not always obtained. In the video function, camera screen blanks out a couple of seconds before a picture is displayed, if your subject is moving, you will have to relocate subject on your display. This camera has subject tracking, however, the photo taken of the subject being tracked is never in sharp focus. The flash is not auto mode. Sometimes indoor photos get over exposed even when the flash is off. Many features but not a camera for those one shot photos.

having a problem with picture shake on movie mode
from Florida, USA
Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P100 Black 10.3 Megapixel Digital Camera:
Have the camera a couple of years take good photos I notice in move mode when using the zoom the picture shakes from the motor. I contacted Nikon customer service even though its out of warranty and they had me send a sample. They reply was that was normal but if i wanted it fixed it would cost me .If its normal why would it need to be fixed? I do not think nikon designed a camera to have the lens shake when using the zoom. I've been thinking about moving up to a D-SLR but after reading about the horrible customer service on the oil spotting on the D 600 I'll look at Canon. i would feel confident if nikon would fix or replace the defect.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

very clear instructions
Japanese products instructions used to be laughably unclear. Now they are written in excellent Englisg, and very easy to understand. The instructions only add to an excellent product.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

The picture quality is downright disgraceful. Pick any other camera but this one. The extra features aren't forth the poor picture quality

I have had this camera for just under a year and I can't believe the quality of the pictures. I have taken every kind of photos imaginable from macro to moonless nightshots and have gotten consistently excellent shots. There has been the odd hiccup here and there, but so has all my other electronics, but not enough to not recommend this camera to my friends. Don't listen to the naysayers, just buy this camera. You won't regret it.

I bought this camera as a gift for myself and boy was I dead wrong on suggesting this gift for myself ..... what a piece of junk? Does not focus correctly all the way out on the zoom, camera is very shakey and photo's are blurry. Even if this camera had a shorter lens like a 21x it may be better in handling and focusing. Photo's shot in sunny daylight look Okay, but a bit washed out; forget about photo's indoor they are absolutely terrible, the color is way off scale. My theory is the Nikon & Canon are Rivals to each other and it seems that they have to put out a camera to compete against each other. The digitals made back in 2005 were great with the CCD Chip, today with the CMOS sensor they are JUNK, I would not recommend Nikon to anyone! Sony & Panasonic are the Frontier for Digital Camera's.

The Nikon Coolpix P100 is a great camera. I sought the zoom capabilities and ease of using the auto pre-set modes and manual modes. I have shot 7000 photos in the past year since purchase utilizing every setting imaginable. I love this camera for a point and shoot. I entered 8 photos in the local fair this year and took 3 first place and 1 third place ribbon. I am hooked on Nikon and will be purchasing a D7000 or D5100 this next spring!

This is my first Nikon, and probably last, I will ever own. Although it has many features and a great owners manual, the consistency of quality photos it not there. I am not a professional photographer, but am not a novice either and have had many difficulties with this camera, having it in for repair 5 times in a year since purchase. Better off spending a little more and going with a DSLR

One cannot expect d3s results in regards to photo quality.. However, if Nikon decides to design a Bridge camera such as the p100 then Nikon management is responsible to sell a product which includes the basics. The p100 produces less than sharp photos and the ability to shoot raw files was not included in the design. A poor management decision.

This is a great, camera i would recommend this as a "first camera" for anyone who is an aspiring photographer. I am an avid photographer, though i am just starting out under aprenticeship of my mother, i say that choosing this camera to get started was one of the best decisions i have made as a photographer. The camera has great quality and great features including the 26x zoom, and the manual mode is great, which is where my camera stays set most of the time. although the manual mode is wonderful, i wish the camera had two scroll wheels, each separate for aperture and shutter speed, but all is well. Team Nikon forever!
