First off, lets start with good things coming from this little camcorder. Sony makes good camcorders and there is no double about that. These days, it can be tough to weigh out all the options and choose one that mostly fits your wish list. You can be exhausted from having endless hours of reading & research online :-)). For me, there are a few features like wide angle lens, great stabilization, lowlight performance which swayed my decision towards this Sony model. Ive also owned a prosumer Sony DV camcorder, but due to the bigger size and bulky-packed accessories, it has kept me from carrying the camcorder with me most of the time. So, I wanted to have a lot smaller camcorder but still give me the best possible image quality to carry around my kids and on vacation trips. Having a wide angle lens is necessary for me because I was able to get more image in the each shot and in tight spaces. I generally dont abuse zooming control when shooting, so 10x optical zoom is enough for me. Picture quality produced by this camcorder is just great. The color and exposure are automatically balanced quite well for both outdoor lighting and indoor lighting conditions. The iAuto works wonderfully, especially if you are shooting children activities. Lowlight noise level is very low for a small CMOS (smallest in its class), in my opinion. Auto white balance works pretty sleek. Ive noticed it gradually adjusts (which I like) when lighting condition is changed from indoor to outdoor and back to indoor. Auto focus is quick and accurate. Motion capture works nicely in good light condition and produces not too blurry moving images. Image stabilization with active mode works so great for a small camcorder like HDR-CX550v. If you have a steady hand, you can still make smooth video while walking. Sony IS Active Mode really helps making some of my shots are viewable, which otherwise would be hard to watch without it. Im glad Sony decided to add electronic view finder back to this model. I like to have EVF as a backup to LCD and know it can be useful in certain shooting situations. The 3.5 high-resolution LCD screen is another good upgrade for this camera class. Touch screen navigation is easy and responsive. Id like how small platform and clean design of this flash model. I like the layout of the inputs & outputs with protective covers (accept the SDHC/Memory stick cover).Manual controls are so limited I dont bother trying it all but manual focus. Partly because auto mode works fine in most cases, so lack of manual control is not a huge miss for me. Thought, Id just like to have some control of the image when needed instead of full auto all the time. In addition, Sony is behind in this flagship line when it comes to native progressive mode. It makes sense when some people point out that Sony holds back on these features to protect their professional lines. I wonder how much longer they can hold while other rivals are doing those things for awhile. Having an ultra-wide angle lens might have caused a bit unusual lens flare (referred as laser-like blue dot in different forums) in certain shooting conditions as Ive experienced. It would be great if Sony can provide (free of charge) a simple lens hood to help reduce the problem. I hope its not too much to ask for a camcorder in this price range. I know Panasonic include one in the package. In conclusion, Sony HDR-CX550v is still a great camera despite a few shorts. I have owned a few Sony electronics and trusted their quality products. But Sony still needs to take this high-end consumer race seriously for being the in the lead. Other big names are about to pass and close to passing Sony. It was a little tough but I made my decision. And hopefully, I wont be regretting soon.

I don't know what the other reviewers were saying about poor video quality, but at 1080P the quality was great. Perhaps they couldn't figure out how to set the camera to 1080P because the interface is confusing. Overall the camera would be fine for the average consumer if the price was around $650-$700. I would recommend this camera to a friend but I would tell them to wait till it comes down in price.

When I first turned on the camera I had no idea how amazing the quality was until I actually replayed the images on my 60" HD TV. I am an artist and was looking for a good camera to help me document my process in creating my sculptures and installations. I was completely blown away by how steady the picture was compared to the other models I have tested. I have tested this camera outdoors and in very low light and it truly performs. I am very happy to find that Sony is focusing on making technology that truly competes and separated itself from the smartphones that are out there. This camera truly reminds us why it is important and worthwhile to spend money on good quality products. I feel that Sony truly stepped up on this one. The price is just icing on the cake. I have had a good quality handheld cam corder from a reputable manufacturer from Japan but this new Sony HD Handycam device is easier to use and the picture qualiity appears far better This could be a matter of new technology eclipse the old but it seems more simple to use and more sophisticated as well The zoom lens has a very good response and image stability and image quality My first impression is that this is a very good device for the average person to use with ordinary day to day recording, the only caveat is to remember to select the HD video or, the MP4 video for a recording format, The MP4 is for things like Facebook and other social networking sites
dissapointment all around

this is an expensive and big dissapointment that does not work with i movie despite what they say. It requires a converter in order to work and even then sometimes does not transfer over. this is a lot of money for such low return. I will be selling this for a Canon product that is much better with i movie.
This is a great camera

This camera is amazing. I've done weddings, travel, photos riding an AmTrak train, macro images. The firewire allows me to simply copy the video clips to an external hard drive and/or my comuter video files. You may need to purchase software that "read" the HD mts clips. Photos have stunning clarity. Very pleased. wish it was on sale when I purchased it.
Possibly worth it.

Have "grown up" on Sony: from TRV900 through to XDCam. Budget restraints forced this purchase, and the picture quality and ease of use has blown away client & DoP respectively. Virtually a point & shoot camera when on auto settings, it has passable low lux capture as well. Given Apple's Final Cut Pro updated codecs, the footage is converted straight off of the camera through "Batch Capture" in fcp 2 upwards (many thanks to Wade at TVNZ for pointing this out, saving me numerous hours on TOAST conversions).
good easy to use family camcorder
good picture quality but not as sharp as competing models .for the price sony should give lens hood to avoid blue dot in sun light and firmware upgrade to record 1080p,60p,24p. or atleast make them available for purchase for the people who want them.we dont buy camcorders every year to get these upgrades
what do you want me to put in here?

Anyway, this is the forth time I installed the software, I come back and could not find it twice the first time, but this time I cannot download the previous videos from it because it does not even know it has those videos stored in the memory. It only sees the present pictures!?

Works perfect with Imovie 11
Wasn't informed enough from the get go about the incompatibility with Mac. Talked to Sony for an hour which resulted in removing SD content off the camera which was inhibiting the HD content from downloading on my Mac. That worked for a day. Called Apple, they suggested downloading Imovie 11 from the AP store. Works flawlessly now!!! I moved, ( not copied) all my projects and events to my external, which they suggested before installing the $15 upgrade. Thanks Apple
works great on Mac
works great on Mac. Imports right into the most recent iMovie with no problem.
