I purchased the Whirlpool 250 model from ABT over seven years ago and ran it on its highest fan speed continuously without any problems during that time, so hopefully this 510 model will be just as reliable. However, I'm not too concerned as the motor has a 5 year warrantee that ABT will fulfill if needed.

I decided to buy this 510 model as the pollen season was approaching for added allergy protection. After several hours of research on the Internet, I discovered that I should probably have a more powerful product to deal with allergies. Without question, the 510 model specifications with its HEPA filter could not be matched by any other consumer product in its price range (or far above it) for its pollen air cleaning power. For example, my 150 square foot room was cleaned by the 250 model at 11.2 air changes per hour with a CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 224 for pollen. The 510 model provides 17.7 air changes per hour with a CADR of 354 for pollen. In other words, it provides 58% more cleaning power, which gives more value than the 50% increase of its cost compared to their 250 model air purifier at ABT.

You must keep in mind, that if you are especially concerned about pollen, all air purifier specifications for maximum effectiveness are based on the highest fan speed setting. Thus if you want to lower the fan speed at night, you will not get the maximum pollen cleaning results.

Overall, this model does what you want it to with a carbon pre-filter to remove heavy particles like dust and pet dander, which also extends the life of the HEPA filter for catching those very fine pollen spores. Other manufacturers often have expensive and complicated filtering systems, which probably have questionable value added to the basic carbon pre-filter/HEPA filter combination. I vacuum the pre-filter monthly and change it every three months due to mostly pet fur and dust that it traps. Unfortunately, like most manufacturers, the indicator lights for filter changes are only based on time of use, and not the actual condition of the filters. So you might want to change them more often, especially if the pre-filter gets really dirty fast.

The trade-off for this extra cleaning power is a bit more noise, but also a breezy room. To this point the 510 is about as noisy as a room air conditioner, at its most powerful turbo speed setting, producing a white noise similar to using a fan. My guess is that most people can get used to this sound at night – which can actually drown out street and other noises for those living in noisy city apartment areas. In my case, with a small room, the breeziness acts to better distribute my air conditioning, so I keep it at a lower setting, and I imagine it may cool the room a bit in the winter months. Also, I can't light my cigars with a match, but need a torch lighter to deal with the breeze. In sum, I highly recommend this product for allergy sufferers who need to use nasal sprays and pills most of the year.

House guest for 2 weeks had a high sensitivity to dust, etc. Bought unit because initial/normal cleaning was not addequate. After 2 days, guest said unit corrected previous allergic/dust irritation.

Bought this when my girlfriend with asthma was moving in to get rid of the remains of the cat dander in the house. Within a couple weeks, it was completely gone. Just went around stirring up the corners, dusting, etc. and this device cleared it out.

It's been running nightly in the bedroom for well over a year and has required little maintenance other than replacing the filters every so often.
