Onkyo HTS3300 HT 5.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package - HTS3300B

Redefining Entry-Level Packaged Home Theater with HDMI™ 1.4 and HD Audio

If you’re looking for a future-ready receiver-and-speaker package that won’t break the bank, your search may be over. Meet Onkyo’s 5.1-channel HT-S3300—a system packed with so much advanced technology that it redefines entry-level home theater. As with every A/V receiver in Onkyo’s 2010 line-up, you get the latest iteration of HDMI—version 1.4. Three HDMI inputs let you hook up, say, your Blu-ray player, game console, and cable/satellite box—all of which can be output via a single cable to your connected high-res display. Not only is HDMI 1.4 compatible with next-generation 3D video, it also enables a convenient Audio Return Channel. On top of this, the HT-S3300 supports lossless HD audio formats from Dolby and DTS—previously the domain of mid-range to high-end receivers only. But that’s not all. The HT-S3300 also provides an overlaid On-Screen Display function for easy adjustment of settings; a Universal Port for one-cable connection of peripherals; Audyssey equalization; four gaming audio modes; and a fully immersive, beautifully balanced 5.1-channel speaker set.

Features

HDMI™ 1.4 Support for 3D Video and Audio Return Channel

The three HDMI 1.4 inputs on the HT-S3300’s A/V receiver let you simultaneously connect high-def sources such as a Blu-ray player, a gaming console, and a cable/satellite tuner. A single output then sends a pristine signal to your connected highresolution display. As the latest version of this connector, HDMI 1.4 adds the exciting possibilities of 3D video and an Audio Return Channel. 3D video is the next big thing in home entertainment, with movie, game, and broadcast content on the increase and 3D-compatible TVs on the near horizon. This future-ready system also offers the convenience of an Audio Return Channel via HDMI. Audio content received directly by your HDTV’s tuner can be sent “upstream” to the A/V receiver, without the need for a separate S/PDIF audio cable.

Decoding of High-Definition Surround- Sound Codecs

The HT-S3300’s A/V receiver can decode Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™—two lossless formats that enable delivery of a bit-for-bit soundtrack identical to the studio master track. These codecs, previously available only on mid-range and high-end receivers, take advantage of the high data capacity of the Blu-ray format.

Convenient Overlaid On-Screen Display via HDMI

Changing your A/V receiver’s settings is now more seamless than ever, thanks to Onkyo’s new overlaid On-Screen Display (OSD) feature. On-screen set-up menus appear overlaid on the video image you’re watching. This means you can adjust the settings immediately, without having to switch back and forth from a blank screen background.

192 kHz/24-Bit Burr-Brown DACs Improve Jitter Performance to Deliver Clearer Sound

High-quality Burr-Brown DACs (PCM1690) work to optimize analog audio performance on the HT-S3300’s A/V receiver. These DACs perform advanced 24-bit signal processing and support sampling rates of up to 192 kHz, while displaying high resistance to clock jitter and offering a 113 dB dynamic range.

EX.Bass for Deeper, More Dynamic Bass

Onkyo’s proprietary EX.Bass function boosts lowfrequency output at two separate points: 40 Hz and 80 Hz. At low volumes, EX.Bass creates a deeper, more dynamic bass sound for your music and movies. When the volume is turned up high, the boosted bass automatically returns to normal levels.

A Suite of Audyssey Technologies for the Ideal Listening Environment

The HT-S3300 comes with three Audyssey technologies.

(1) Audyssey EQ™ automates the speakerconfiguration process and employs a pre-set correction filter for each speaker, reducing the acoustic interference caused by a typical listening room.

(2) Audyssey Dynamic Volume™ automatically compensates for volume fluctuations in different audio content—for example, during commercial breaks—while optimizing the dynamic range.

(3) Audyssey Dynamic EQ™ maintains a consistent bass response, tonal balance, and surround-sound effect at different volume levels, so you can enjoy the natural dynamics of your content regardless of the volume.

My primary use for this device was with a PC running Windows 7 64-bit and I had some problems which is what my review will focus on. When plugging the receiver in via a stereo wire, the Dolby ProLogic II shined beautifully transforming my 2 channel audio into a brilliant 5.1 soundstage (after minor tweaking of the receiver settings).

However, when I upgraded to HDMI for full native 5.1 sound I had some issues. The biggest issue is that you lose Dolby ProLogic II completely. Under HDMI you can still use the Onkyo presets which are front channel oriented or you can set it to play on all speakers which makes audio sound washed, cutting the volume down significantly.

I'm unhappy with all those options so I concluded the best option is Direct mode which puts the computer in control of each channel. The drawbacks listed below apply only to operating in Direct Mode with a PC:
    1. Unless you find a tweak, for which I haven't, 2 channel audio files will only work on the front 2 channels and no subwoofer. (Video files and discs that have native 5.1 audio will perform fine under Direct mode.)
    2. For some reason all flash videos seem to be very buggy with Direct mode. The audio constantly cuts in and out. I've tested it out using multiple websites and with multiple browsers all using the latest version of Flash. I am forced to switch the receiver out of Direct Mode to watch.
    3. Direct mode cuts power to the speakers after a second or two of silence which results in a loud click sound from the receiver.
    4. Since your speakers are always off when not in use, when you start to play any sound in Direct mode the receiver cuts off the first second or two of audio while powering up the speakers and again, it makes another annoying click sound in the process.

So why do I give this setup 4/5 stars? The speakers are powerful and the sound is great when its all working. The subwoofer provides excellent low frequency bass that rocks the house. Especially when playing a few THX Bass Test mp3s. It'd be great if Dolby ProLogic II was available for HDMI connections because then I could listen to my 2 channel mp3s under ProLogic and go back to direct mode when I want to listen to a 5.1 source. A set top box (like a cablebox or bluray/dvd player) wont suffer from any of these problems. Their sound is constant so no clicks, and since they usually don't have Flash support, that wont be a problem.

Bottom Line: Read the entire manual and take the time to setup ProLogic II to your liking (I prefer to make the soundstage wider which can be done if you play around.) It is great for your cablebox and dvd player but PCs are very complex which will leave you frustrated because you can't seem to have your cake and eat it too. BUT YOU WON'T FIND A BETTER SOUNDING HOME THEATER IN A BOX FOR THIS PRICE. It is hands down the best deal you are going to get and so I recommend it to anyone buying on a budget.

I laid out the system, and went to set it up and it wouldn't program while anything other than TV was selected. When it did get to programming, it would take one change and then freeze up. Had to unplug to reboot just to get the system to turn back on. Wouldn't turn off with anything other than TV selected.
    Speakers were not that great.
Bass wasn't crisp and overshadowed everything with it's crackling.
Product was returned within a week for being defective.

Hint: If it seems like it is taking you too long to understand the manual, systmem or instructions.......call Onkyo customer service for the answer to save time. System is the best sounding system I have ever owned (Sony and others). More features for the money and more features then I need at this time. I am very happy with the system and the price I paid. Good value for the monry.

Comments about Onkyo Home Theater Package:

I love the sound! I bought this system to replace my old Sony Surround System, which was not HDMI-compatible, and I could immediately tell the difference! The sound is so much crisper and realistic. Sometimes I will be sitting on the sofa watching a movie alone and I will hear a sound behind me, and believe that there is actually someone or something behind me to where I have to turn around and look! Very realistic. I actually disconnected my old Sony system and connected the Onkyo by myself, which is a real feat since I am technically challenged! However, the actual on-screen set-up, once it was connected, was not as easy for me as was my old Sony system (i.e., not as user-friendly). It took me a few tries to get the sound the way I wanted it.

I mostly wanted the Onkyo because I enjoy watching movies, and preferably in blu-ray. So I wanted a sound system that would make the movies sound as great as they looked. And the Onkyo HT 5.1 does exactly that! I am sure the longer I own this product the more I will learn about what it is capable of doing. But after owning it for only a couple of weeks, it is already awesome! I definitely recommend this product to anyone looking in this price range for a home theater system. Believe me, I did my homework and researched for quite a while. In the end, the Onkyo was by far the best deal on the market.

Comments about Onkyo Home Theater Package:

This system's sound is very clear and loud. If you are worried about the passive sub woofer, don't be. I had to turn the bass down so I do not disturb my neighbors. I am very impressed with this system. It is well worth the price. I did a lot a research and ABT has the best price.
