What is best about the product - it does what is claimed for a reasonal (low compare to competitors I saw) price. We live in a very humid enviornment and I have it it the garage/workshop and it does its job. It took 1 day to get me to 50% humidity and it holds it there no problem. How long will it last is my unknown.

This unit was recommended by Consumer Reports. The fan can be set on LOW because it changes to HIGH on its own, when needed. Even LOW speed is too loud to be in same room where you have a TV however. I use with a hose and there is no Green Slime build up like that reported by those purchasing some other brands. Display shows real time humidity; not your setting. It is accurate to about +- 5 so you may want your own humidity gauge somewhere else in the room. Unit is smart about removing the water container - it doesn't shut down right away. It waits a minute to see if you put it back before any alarm or shut off occurs. Water container must be in place even when using the hose. Reminder light to clean filter is another smart feature that lights up after every 250 hours of use.

I pulled this thing out of the box, plugged it in the outlet and it worked right away! Like magic. Previously had a Kenmore model which quit working after 5 good summers in my basement(which from the other reviews, sounds above average....are dehumidifiers really expected to last only 3-5 years?). This GE model is smaller, lighter, more effective, and has the same features...the only minor negative is that the fan is slightly louder but it has to make some noise circulating all that air. I suppose the true test is how long this will last. I'm hoping to get at least 5 years, but we'll see. I wish the manufacturers would just disclose this up front and tell people the expected life of the unit has an upper limit (whatever that may be). Perhaps they should throw an "hours meter" on the units to show total accumulated running time (such as on boats or tractors) and then people could measure the use accurately.

Pulled a huge amount of water out of a basement in a very short period of time. An unusually humid summer put us in need of such an appliance. I spent alot of time researching and chose this product. Bought this in June 2010 and it has been running nonstop since June 22. Humidity went from off scale (max is 80%) down to 50% in about 1 week. Now bounces between 50-60% depending on weather and what is going on in the basement--humidity goes up when washer or dryer is run. Used in unfinished basement and utility room so has direct drain setup next to furnace--very convenient. Run fan on high and is pretty noisy at that setting. Also it really does throw out some heat (measured at 100 degrees F) but that is in the laundry/furnace room so doesn't matter much. I agree with other reviewer suggesting that the unit take humidity down to 5% below the setting before shutting off so that it doesn't have to run continuously. I'm hoping that once I get the basement insulated and finished it won't need to run as much. Still it has done a great job and I have recommended it to several other friends. Probably will buy another one when this one drops dead next year.

I bought this to dry out a newly finished, carpeted basement, approximately 800 sq ft, mostly one open room, that became damp with the summer humidity. This product took it from 90% relative humidity to 60% very rapidly. It is quiet enough that it's not bothersome to run while my daughter is playing downstairs, and has a large enough bucket that it only needs to be emptied once every day or every other day. Despite it's capacity, it is very inconspicuous. The settings are easy to use and understand, and very easy to adjust the target humidity up and down. The only very, very minor gripe I have is that it occasionally cycles on and off very rapidly when the ambient humidity is around the target; it would be nice if it simply ran until the humidity was 5% below the target, then shut off until it was 5% above the target before turning back on. Overall, though, very satisfied. Can't comment on electrical efficiency or durability, as I have only had it three weeks.

I use this product for my summertime damp basement. The product is relatively quiet compared to my older unit. I also like the energy star rating. The handle make the emptying of the bucket easy for my wife. That being said I was used to a larger container with my older unit and it needs to be emptied about every 12 hours or less. I finally hooked up a short garden hose directly to the unit (which the unit has accommodations for) I would highly recommend this unit.

I was originally looking to purchase the 50 pint model (ADER50) but [...]decided to purchase this larger capacity model. I use it in my finished basement. I don't know for sure what my square footage is, but it's a typical single-family house basement. This unit kicks butt! At the time of purchase it was $35 more vs. the 50 pint model. It works great. It's loud (so what) and it throws off a good amount of heat (so what). I turn it off when I'm in the basement. I like the 2-hr and 4-hr timer options. My previous dehumidifier didn't have this feature which I've grown to like. Pretty easy...plug it in and turn it on, that's all.

The GE dehumidifier has worked fine to date. My experience with these appliances is they last about two years if you are lucky. This is my first GE. The humidity sensor is very accurate and the unit maintains your settings adequately. I have it in the basement and it works for the entire house. I live in southeast so the unit will get a work out just to keep up. The water container is a bit awkward to pull and empty but if the unit keeps working like it is now for the next two to three years - great.

I've been using the dehumidifier to take the moisture out of my basement, which gets pretty damp in the summer. While I've used it with the fan settings at all speeds, it's most efficient at HI, although the HI setting is not nearly as quiet as the two lower settings. I use the hose rather than the bucket to drain off the water. The "clean filter" reminder is a plus; otherwise I'd go all season without checking it, which, of course, reduces efficiency.

I also like knowing that the coils will not freeze in the winter (I hope that this is true it is currently summer) I purchase this unit primarily based on its energy star rating and consumer reports rating. I also used the personal reviews of others to decide between this unit and another one from a different manufacturer. I have only owned this product for less than a month but I am very happy so far. BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
We use this in our damp (but not usually wet) basement. Due to a large storm and ground squirrel activity, we got a few inches of mud in the basement right after we bought this. The dehumidifier really helped to dry that up quickly. Under more normal usage, the fan turns off when the humidistat stops calling, which is good. I installed it with a meter on the outlet and the unit runs about half the time, whereas the old, smaller one it replaced used to run 24/7 (and use more Watt-hours) and it was not as dry down there. So overall we're happy with it. If you are thinking about a medium, I'd recommend you go with a larger size like this one instead. The large and medium units have the same plastic case (and footprint), just beefier working parts inside the big one. The only reason I only gave 4 stars is because we haven't owned it long enough to know about longevity. I expect a unit of this cost to last a long time, we will see about that. One negative: when the unit arrived, it did not work. We figured out that the shut-off switch, for when the tank is full of water, was not properly seated. So the unit thought the water tank was full and the dehumidifier would not kick in. Once we snapped the push-button switch back into place it worked great. [...] it is a very minor glitch with no relevance to long-term function, but we all expect a $200+ appliance to just work right out of the box.

My basement was getting very humid and damp. I purchased this dehumidifier and within days it went from a relative humidity of over 70% to around 50%. I was impressed. It isn't quiet but not overly loud. I can hear the fan running constantly but the condenser only kicks in when the humidity is above the set level. You can hook up a regular garden hose (not included) for continuous drainage and that seems to work well. Unlike other dehumidifiers the hose connects to a port int he side of the unit not off the drain pan. So far it has been excellent but it has only been 3 weeks.

Cons: Noisy

We've had some very, very humid days in the last month -- way beyond the norm for this area. We bought this machine to replace a Kenmore which had worked well for years. This GE unit has been extremely effective in keeping our basement at a pleasant level of humidity. Like all dehumidifiers, it makes noise but it's no noisier than any of 3 others we've had over the years. We empty it twice a day (morning and night)and if we forget, the blinking light reminds us. At this stage, we're more than pleased with this purchase.

One year ago my wife and I purchased a GE AHR65LM dehumidifier to tame the dampness in our finished basement. Due to the size of the basement (~1200 square feet), we knew just one dehumidifier probably wouldn't do the trick. As of January 1, 2010, GE stopped making the AHR65LM and replaced it with the ADER65LN. From the outside, the two look identical. [...] The change was mandated by the US government and affects all air conditioners and dehumidifiers. The new one uses R-410A refrigerant. They apparently also lowered the MSRP during the model change. So far the ADER65LN has been just as effective as the AHR65LM. The two units working in tandem have kept our basement humidity at a reasonable 45% even during a damp spring.

Basically the same loudness as previous models I have owned. Really like the digital display. Removes water really well. Like the air discharge out the top of unit. Only can give it an excellent rating if it lasts many, many years. Wish it had a temporary off button with automatic turn on. Had that before and it was nice when we watched movies in the basement. Don't have to worry about turning it on again after the movie. This one has delay shutoff??? Why would you want that?

Unlike most dehumifiers I've owned, this one has a separate hose attachment that is not part of the bucket. With the hose connected the unit will sometimes fill the bucket instead. Not sure why that happens but it is a problem if you leave home for a week and find out the bucket has filled and the unit then shuts off even though the hose is connected. Unit does not have an automatic on/off feature; a big disappointment

We are using this product in a basement where we also have a TV room. This dehumidifier is easy to use, energy efficient, quite effective in removing moisture but too loud. I am planning to buy a second unit as our basement is big but I am going to get a different brand that is quieter so that we can leave it on if someone is also watching TV.

This replaced an old [...] that we had for 10-15 years to keep the basement dry. It's quieter and I like the feature where you hook the hose on the side and then it doesn't run into the water pan where stuff seems to grow. Our house is open top to bottom and it seems to handle the load and still doesn't run all the time. It maintains a 5$ humidity range. For example if you set it for 50%, it takes it down to 45%, shuts off and comes back on at 50%.
