I have two of these. The first one I bought died prior to a year. GE's customer service made getting a replacement easy. I'm hoping it was just a fluke that I got a bad one. I'm waiting to see if they last. They are very effective at keeping the entire house dry (one in the house and one in the basement). They are somewhat noisy, but that may be unavoidable. I don't know how they compare to other, similar models.
Pros: Effective, Easy warranty service

It was hard to find in the specs that the demumidifer would shut off both fan and compressor. We were pleased this model does. We only need the dehumidifer in the basement when it rains. It just rained for 3 days straight and it worked great. We do use a hose with it and decided to put a tee in the hose and it does drain better. Hope it gives us over 20 years of service as our old dehumidifier did.

We use this dehumidifier in our unfinished basement in Georgia, to keep it dry. This is our 3rd dehumidifier and so far, it works the best. It's quieter than other models, has a better connection for the drain hose (threaded, not a slip on, so no leaking), blows air out of the top, which makes it easier to place the device and cuts off automatically when the desired humidity is reached.

I am a consumer reports subscriber and very carefully selected a dehumidifier. So far the appliance is working without a hitch. The hose is draining all water away and the reservoir inside the unit is completely dry. It's removing a lot of water. A lot of reviews for dehumidifiers state that they fail within 6 months to a year so I chose to purchase an extended warranty for the product. It's been running now for approximately 45 days.

This dehumidifier is the absolutely berries. It produces about eight gallons of condensate per day. It's far more quiet than my other four year old unit. It has a little digital readout that gives the current humidity and it can be regulated as to how how much drying is desired. When pouring the condensate out of the container you must be careful because it contains a lot of water and it will spill and splash a little but except for that one drawback I can highly recommend this particular unit.

Bought this 5 weeks ago for our large (>2000sq ft) basment. It is VERY effective and quickly brings the humidity down in the entire basement to about 45-50% from its natural state of ~80%. This unit is a replacement for a failed Danby dehumidifier (just stopped working after 3 summers of use) which never came even close to controlling the humidity as this GE product does. I attached a hose to drain into the floor drain, so I don't have to empty the bucket. The machine is not whisper quiet, so may not be great for living areas. The bucket is easy to use and to empty, but somewhat small capacity--which is why it's easy to use!

I've always relied on Consumer Reports as one of my research sites. I purchased my first dehumidifier 6 years ago and it ran true to their ratings. My basement is quite cool all year, so it got a constant workout. I recently decided to upgrade, about 6 weeks ago, and again relied on CR for ratings. CR gave this machine good ratings. So far the machine has run flawless and I am quite impressed with the speed at which it draws moisture from the air. Controls are quite simple and reasonably quiet for basement use.

Once I got the hose connected it is working fine. You will need to get your own hose and it was a bit of a problem getting the metal hose fitting to not leak when attached to the plastic fitting on the dehumidifier. 3 tries and I had it. Since it was in the crawl space the rest of the challenge was the lack of light and the tight space. But all well and dry now.

GE should be ashamed of selling such a terrible unit at such a price and then not standing behind it!

I previously had a 45 pint Whirlpool unit for 8 years that generated a lot of heat, as well as occasionally froze and was generally ineffective unless I constantly monitored and thawed it. Much to my delight, this GE unit dries 1000 square feet effectively without excessive heat. I read many reviews prior to purchase and expected it to be at least as noisy as my old unit, if not louder, however, it is in the basement and I do not hear it on the first floor. When I am in the basement, it is much less noisy than the average AC unit, and is much quieter than my experience with units in the homes of friends and family. Additionally, I have noticed a significant decrease in electrical usage over the last 2 months since installing, despite the increased rainfall/moisture levels this summer.

This is the first dehumidifier I have bought in 15 years. If I had known how much better they work these days, I wouldn't have waited so long to get a new one. Our 1500' sq. basement was so muggy during the summer months even with the old machine running at full capacity. The GE ADER65LP had the humidity level to <50% from over 80% in under 5 hours. I needed to change the condensate reservior 3 times, which is just over 6 gallons. I was amazed at how fast it made our basement comfortable. Now that the moisture has been removed, I only need to run it for a few minutes daily to maintain ~40% humidity (very nice for the midwest in the summer). It was certainly worth the price. The only downside is the weight (almost 50lbs). The wheels work fine on hardwood but you must pick it up to go over carpet. If you plan on drying out multiple rooms and need to move it frequently, I would suggest getting a smaller model.
Best Uses: Any low ventilation area, Dank Basement

We had a terribly damp basement due to moisture that came up thru the floor. Nobody ever wanted to use the family room down there because it was always cold and damp. Also because it smelled "like an old basement". When we first plugged the dehumidifier in, the humidity measured 85%! It's now at 50% and it's like having a totally new addition to our house. The air is clean smelling, the temperature is slightly warmer and the humidity is no longer an issue. An extra side benefit is that the clothes I hang up to dry are dry in no time at all!. I highly recommend this dehumidifier.

Works well with a ten foot section of hose that drains directly into a floor drain. The catch is that all dehumidifiers seem to work well initially, but many seem to fail just after their one year warranty expires. I hope that will not be the case with this model. I was reluctant to buy this because of a prior bad experience with a GE refrigerator in 2001 that required 2 service calls in the first 6 months and failed again in 5 years. I was convinced to buy this by Consumer Reports evaluation of this model and many user reviews on the internet.

I bought one of these a little over a year ago (6/14/2010) and it did a good job of bringing the humidity from out of range to 50% in about a week. I ran it continuously until I shut it down in Nov and it kept humidity down to 50% during that time. I started it up in April 2011 and it did OK for a while then it started switching on and off regularly with little output. I should have requested a replacement then as it was not keeping up with the humidity but I waited too long. I wanted to buy a second one thinking that the humidity was just high this year (70%) but Abt was back ordered. Finally I went to a local store the other day and bought the GE ADEW65LP a newer version of the ADER65LN. I plugged it in and it brought the humidity down from 70% to 45% in a few hours! I guess the old one will be making a trip to the dump soon. Every review I've read suggests that these units crash and burn after about 1 year--usually right after the warranty period ends so if you turn it off for the winter make sure you crank it up early in the spring and demand a replacement if it doesn't work like it used to.

The GE ADER65 dehumidifier removes a lot of water from the air but is always working towards a humidity target of 50%, even when I have set it to 65 or 70%. As a result it is using more energy than I would like, and because I disposed of the shipping materials, I will have to put it on a timer to reduce its run time. Apart from this it works very well. The unit moves a lot of air, even on low, so makes noise and is best suited for a basement or other unoccupied area. Seems to make less heat than the unit it replaced. I am using the hose to drain into a 5-gallon bucket and hose connection is secure and well positioned compared to my prior LG Unit.

Generally very happy with the unit. It pulls a lot of water out of the humid air in the house. So far, my only complaints are that it can get somewhat noisier than I would like, and it cycles back on too rapidly after reaching the set point and cycling off. There should be a timer function to prevent this or the humidistat shouldn't be so sensitive. Its just an annoyance. The water pan is a bit awkward, but not that big of a deal. After a couple of times you get used to it. It does hold a lot of water. I'll be interested to see how this unit holds up long term.

Combine that with the consistent Midwest Spring rainfall so far this year and we had quite a muggy basement. Within a week this dehumidifier had cleaned up the mugginess and the air quality is much better. The GE dehumidifier seems to be energy efficient. It dried the basement air so mold should not be a problem. This machine moves a lot of air, so it is not very quiet. It produces a steady ''swooshing'' sound.... no compressor noise. I suppose this is the trade off for energy efficiency. The condensate tank has a nice handle, so it is easy to empty. The GE ADER65LN is a take it out of the box and plug it in machine. Simple to use. Well made. It is most efficient on high fan. Lower fan speeds put stress on the compressor, make it work longer to do the job. I put it in the basement at 58F and 75% humidity. It shortly dried it out to 60% humidity, which is fine for preventing mold growth. At this setting in that environment, it used about 7kw hours of electricity per day. Not too bad. Keep a check on the water pan, it fills fast, auto cut off works perfectly. Low temp operation is great. This is the best personal dehumidifier I have used in my 40 plus years of using dehumidifiers.

I purchased this dehumidifier to replace a Danby that had lost it's coolant after about 3 years of use during the summer months only. The unit is being used in a 2000sf unfinished basement and it controls the humidity well. I really like the engineering on the GE. The fan runs only when needed, while the fan on the Danby stayed on all the time. The noise level is also a bit lower on the GE. I connected a drain line from the unit to my sump pit, which is very easy to do, so I never have to empty a container. I've had the product for 6 months and am very pleased thus far.

I purchased two of these units to control high humidity levels in my bedrooms. They work well. No more musty odors. The humidity sensors in the units are not spot on, but close. I have both units set for 60% humidity and they automatically turn on and off to maintain this level. They do seem to turn on and off more frequently than I would think is needed. I run both units on the low fan setting and they seem to do fine at removing moisture at this setting. I watch TV and sleep in the same room with the unit working. I do have to turn up the TV volume some as these units are not wisper quite, but not as loud as other dehumidifiers I have owned. I usually empty the condensate bucket once daily. It is easy to remove and dump, although I advise dumping it into a bath or shower to avoid spillage. I did alot of research on dehumidifiers before purchasing these units and I have not been disappointed.

I used this dehumidifier after I found mold growing on my basement walls. After cleaning it up and installing the dehumidifier, I had no mold reappear. We bought the product 5 months ago and it still works well. The water pan would fill up every 3 days or so. I was amazed with how much water collected in the pan. I installed the garden hose to drain directly into my basement sink, which was great, so now I can forget about it, except for the filter cleaning every few weeks. To use the garden hose extension, I needed to raise the dehumdifier, it was heavy, but manageable and my sink can support that weight. Though it has the energy star label, our electricity bill went up (we have the dehumidifier running 24 hours), but can't compare the energy use to a non-energy star that also runs 24 hours. Overall, I am very happy with this choice and would recommend it.

This unit was recommended by Consumer Reports. The fan can be set on LOW because it changes to HIGH on its own, when needed. Even LOW speed is too loud to be in same room where you have a TV however. I use with a hose and there is no Green Slime build up like that reported by those purchasing some other brands. Display shows real time humidity; not your setting. It is accurate to about +- 5 so you may want your own humidity gauge somewhere else in the room. Unit is smart about removing the water container - it doesn't shut down right away. It waits a minute to see if you put it back before any alarm or shut off occurs. Water container must be in place even when using the hose. Reminder light to clean filter is another smart feature that lights up after every 250 hours of use.

I pulled this thing out of the box, plugged it in the outlet and it worked right away! Like magic. Previously had a Kenmore model which quit working after 5 good summers in my basement(which from the other reviews, sounds above average....are dehumidifiers really expected to last only 3-5 years?). This GE model is smaller, lighter, more effective, and has the same features...the only minor negative is that the fan is slightly louder but it has to make some noise circulating all that air. I suppose the true test is how long this will last. I'm hoping to get at least 5 years, but we'll see. I wish the manufacturers would just disclose this up front and tell people the expected life of the unit has an upper limit (whatever that may be). Perhaps they should throw an "hours meter" on the units to show total accumulated running time (such as on boats or tractors) and then people could measure the use accurately.

Bought this in June 2010 and it has been running nonstop since June 22. Humidity went from off scale (max is 80%) down to 50% in about 1 week. Now bounces between 50-60% depending on weather and what is going on in the basement--humidity goes up when washer or dryer is run. Used in unfinished basement and utility room so has direct drain setup next to furnace--very convenient. Run fan on high and is pretty noisy at that setting. Also it really does throw out some heat (measured at 100 degrees F) but that is in the laundry/furnace room so doesn't matter much. I agree with other reviewer suggesting that the unit take humidity down to 5% below the setting before shutting off so that it doesn't have to run continuously. I'm hoping that once I get the basement insulated and finished it won't need to run as much. Still it has done a great job and I have recommended it to several other friends. Probably will buy another one when this one drops dead next year.

I bought this to dry out a newly finished, carpeted basement, approximately 800 sq ft, mostly one open room, that became damp with the summer humidity. This product took it from 90% relative humidity to 60% very rapidly. It is quiet enough that it's not bothersome to run while my daughter is playing downstairs, and has a large enough bucket that it only needs to be emptied once every day or every other day. Despite it's capacity, it is very inconspicuous. The settings are easy to use and understand, and very easy to adjust the target humidity up and down. The only very, very minor gripe I have is that it occasionally cycles on and off very rapidly when the ambient humidity is around the target; it would be nice if it simply ran until the humidity was 5% below the target, then shut off until it was 5% above the target before turning back on. Overall, though, very satisfied. Can't comment on electrical efficiency or durability, as I have only had it three weeks.

I was originally looking to purchase the 50 pint model (ADER50) but [...]decided to purchase this larger capacity model. I use it in my finished basement. I don't know for sure what my square footage is, but it's a typical single-family house basement. This unit kicks butt! At the time of purchase it was $35 more vs. the 50 pint model. It works great. It's loud (so what) and it throws off a good amount of heat (so what). I turn it off when I'm in the basement. I like the 2-hr and 4-hr timer options. My previous dehumidifier didn't have this feature which I've grown to like. Pretty easy...plug it in and turn it on, that's all.

I've been using the dehumidifier to take the moisture out of my basement, which gets pretty damp in the summer. While I've used it with the fan settings at all speeds, it's most efficient at HI, although the HI setting is not nearly as quiet as the two lower settings. I use the hose rather than the bucket to drain off the water. The "clean filter" reminder is a plus; otherwise I'd go all season without checking it, which, of course, reduces efficiency.

BOTTOM LINE Yes, I would recommend this to a friend.
We use this in our damp (but not usually wet) basement. Due to a large storm and ground squirrel activity, we got a few inches of mud in the basement right after we bought this. The dehumidifier really helped to dry that up quickly. Under more normal usage, the fan turns off when the humidistat stops calling, which is good. I installed it with a meter on the outlet and the unit runs about half the time, whereas the old, smaller one it replaced used to run 24/7 (and use more Watt-hours) and it was not as dry down there. So overall we're happy with it. If you are thinking about a medium, I'd recommend you go with a larger size like this one instead. The large and medium units have the same plastic case (and footprint), just beefier working parts inside the big one. The only reason I only gave 4 stars is because we haven't owned it long enough to know about longevity. I expect a unit of this cost to last a long time, we will see about that. One negative: when the unit arrived, it did not work. We figured out that the shut-off switch, for when the tank is full of water, was not properly seated. So the unit thought the water tank was full and the dehumidifier would not kick in. Once we snapped the push-button switch back into place it worked great. [...] it is a very minor glitch with no relevance to long-term function, but we all expect a $200+ appliance to just work right out of the box.

We've had some very, very humid days in the last month -- way beyond the norm for this area. We bought this machine to replace a Kenmore which had worked well for years. This GE unit has been extremely effective in keeping our basement at a pleasant level of humidity. Like all dehumidifiers, it makes noise but it's no noisier than any of 3 others we've had over the years. We empty it twice a day (morning and night)and if we forget, the blinking light reminds us. At this stage, we're more than pleased with this purchase.

One year ago my wife and I purchased a GE AHR65LM dehumidifier to tame the dampness in our finished basement. Due to the size of the basement (~1200 square feet), we knew just one dehumidifier probably wouldn't do the trick. As of January 1, 2010, GE stopped making the AHR65LM and replaced it with the ADER65LN. From the outside, the two look identical. [...] The change was mandated by the US government and affects all air conditioners and dehumidifiers. The new one uses R-410A refrigerant. They apparently also lowered the MSRP during the model change. So far the ADER65LN has been just as effective as the AHR65LM. The two units working in tandem have kept our basement humidity at a reasonable 45% even during a damp spring.

I just purchased this 3 days ago and it has been great so far. [...] Directions were clear and simple. [...] In 3 days it took my basement from a humidity of 75 to 50. I could feel a dramatic difference. It is a little noisy but since it's for a basement I don't care.

Basically the same loudness as previous models I have owned. Really like the digital display. Removes water really well. Like the air discharge out the top of unit. Only can give it an excellent rating if it lasts many, many years. Wish it had a temporary off button with automatic turn on. Had that before and it was nice when we watched movies in the basement. Don't have to worry about turning it on again after the movie. This one has delay shutoff??? Why would you want that?

We use this in the basement and the effect on humidity has been considerable and immediate. It's also amazingly quiet (not that it needs to be quiet in our unfinished basement). Would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet, effective, and accurate dehumidifier.

Unlike most dehumifiers I've owned, this one has a separate hose attachment that is not part of the bucket. With the hose connected the unit will sometimes fill the bucket instead. Not sure why that happens but it is a problem if you leave home for a week and find out the bucket has filled and the unit then shuts off even though the hose is connected. Unit does not have an automatic on/off feature; a big disappointment

I like the electronic readout for the humidity. I have a damp basement and the prior unit ran 24 hours a day. This unit runs less than half that time and is more efficient. The most important thing is that the basement stays at 55% humidity[...]

We are using this product in a basement where we also have a TV room. This dehumidifier is easy to use, energy efficient, quite effective in removing moisture but too loud. I am planning to buy a second unit as our basement is big but I am going to get a different brand that is quieter so that we can leave it on if someone is also watching TV.

I first tested it in an area that I thought was dry and in 2 hours the bucket was filling up with water. I am installing it in a damp basement with a hose connected to a drain. You would have to empty bucket several times a day if you don't use a hose to drain. Nice piece of equipment.

This replaced an old [...] that we had for 10-15 years to keep the basement dry. It's quieter and I like the feature where you hook the hose on the side and then it doesn't run into the water pan where stuff seems to grow. Our house is open top to bottom and it seems to handle the load and still doesn't run all the time. It maintains a 5$ humidity range. For example if you set it for 50%, it takes it down to 45%, shuts off and comes back on at 50%.
