I bought this some time ago to dress up my Artisan mixer. I think it looks great and works just fine. Of course it *is* heavy, but that's because it's solid glass. And that being said, you have to treat it as such. Glass breaks. Glass chips. However treat it with care and it'll last. The grey base unscrews from the bowl so you can put it in the microwave when needed, just twist it counterclockwise and it comes off. The lid it comes with is a nice touch too!

I have had my glass bowl for a couple years and I love it. It's great for all kind of mixing tasks but especially for cakes and breads. Because it's clear it is easy to see to make sure that everything is mixed in; no flour or liquid lying unmixed in the bottom. It is also great for measuring bread rise because you can clearly see when the dough has doubled, with or without the measurement marks on the side. BUT it is so easy to break the bowl just securing it into the mixer stand base. The optimism way to secure it brings the spout in such close contact with the back of the stand that the slightest touch can chip or crack the spout. (See pix) I'm so sorry that mine has chipped and cracked just from regular use. I wish this had a better design.

Mostly Happy with mine
By Euni the Cake Lady
from Mechanicsville, VA
I have had my mixer about 6 months. I now average a cake a week (everyone loves lemon pound cakes). I find the bowl heavy but then again I'm 80. Donna the Dough Girl's review caught my eye. I have the opposite problem. My bowl locks with the handle close to the mixer but has not cracked. Probably because I have to be careful not to mash my fingers. The other thing is, I am left handed! That coupled with the fact that it's heavy causes me to be more careful not to drop it makes me exercise caution. Seating it requires a second effort sometimes. Otherwise I am happy with the bowl. The only other thing is my switch doesn't move easily from setting to setting.

I was gifted a bowl for Christmas as I only had the metal bowl. I could never get the bowl to sit in place and it would move around so much so i had to hold it with both hands and only on the lowest speed. I received a replacement bowl after contacting kitchenaid. Sad to say the same thing happened. It won't lock into place. For something that costs so much money I am really disappointed.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Beware of the glass bowl
By Sad in nc

I love love love the 5qt mixer i purchased but it came with the glass bowl which looks very nice and is handy for seeing your ingredients but the 3rd time it was used the very bottom where the bowl locks in cracked with tiny shards of glass getting in my finger.I have wanted one of these mixers my whole life and after spurging on the purchase i am disappointed in the glass quality and wish mine had come with the metal bowl. Now im stuck with a 300 counter decoration or spending 60-70 to buy a new bowl or using it without it being locked in place.

I love my glass bowl. I have seen the reviews about the chipping problems but, I have not had any chipping problems. The only problem I have is difficulty in snapping it into place. It takes a bit of maneuvering unlike the stainless steel bowl which snaps right in, otherwise I love the size and find no problems with it.

I've had this bowl for years and never had a problem... until the plastic piece that holds the base down broke. Now the bowl is useless as far as using it with the mixer. I've looked online to purchase a replacement and can't find one. I can buy replacement lids, but not the plastic base.
Glad to learn it was not just mine
I upgraded from the 4.5 quart to this mixer and the glass bowl broke the first month. I thought it was just me! The bowl has functional problems. First - it does not attach to the mixer very well. It takes multiple tries and does not feel sturdy in the base. And as a result of juggling to get in the pour spout hit the machine and it cracked the bowl. I now use my 4.5 quart metal bowl - although the whole reason I purchased was for the larger capacity since I use very often. I did call Customer Service and they are shipping a new one - I just wish I could have replaced with Metal bowl. I am very nervous about using the glass bowl again but really do need the larger size. I am disappointed I will have to ultimately purchase the metal bowl and spend more money - but do appreciate Kitchen aid replacing the broken bowl. I would recommend the mixer but not the glass bowl.

So sad- broken glass bowl after 4 uses
from Ocala, FL
I am so upset-- the bowl cracked after a couple uses. I carefully hand wash it every time. I put it in the standing mixer. Then a few minutes later we heard a popping/cracking sound and looked over to see a crack in the glass. Something about the pressure of locking it in place stressed the glass. I would not recommend this glass bowl.
I've had my Kitchenaid mixer with this glass bowl for about 5 months now. While using the mixer the silver cover from the top attachment spot fell down into the bowl while the mixer was on. My bowl immediately Shattered everywhere and the mixer jammed up and stopped turning. I called Kitchenaid customer service and they are sending my a new one since mine was still under warranty. Good job to customer service but this bowl needs to be more sturdy. I am looking into getting the stainless steel bowl now.
