First was color, then HD. Now get ready for the third wave – Full HD 3D

Tremendous developments have driven TV technologies from the 20th century until today. Among them, color TV and high definition (HD) TV were two major advances. Progress was achieved in recording media as well, from tape to DVD, and then to Blu-ray Disc™, with Panasonic constantly leading the way in both TV technologies and recording media. Now, Panasonic presents a third breakthrough in the form of Full HD 3D – and totally redefines image realism – with advanced image technologies that aim to bring more lifelike viewing experiences to us all.

Frame Sequential Technology Full HD Signals for Each Eye

The technology in which the left-eye and right-eye 3D images are sent to the viewer is key to the 3D image quality. For this, Full HD 3D uses something called Frame Sequential technology. First, the plasma display panel, which has a number of inherent advantages for moving picture resolution, was further advanced to allow images for each of the left and right eyes to be alternately reproduced at the rate of 60 frames per second (fps), making a total fps for both eyes. Viewers watch the images through high-precision 3D Eyewear*, which open and close the left and right shutters in synchronization with the alternating images. As a result, a separate 1920 x 1080 full-HD image is sent to each eye. This addresses the image quality problems and blurring that were common to previous 3D systems, and creates sharp, crisp 3D images.

* Included with each VIERA 3DTV is one pair of 3D Eyewear necessary to view the 3D content. To share this experience with others, additional 3D Eyewear may be purchased separately.

VIERA CAST™ Enjoy Online Content on the Big Screen with a Wi-Fi System

VIERA Cast™ is powered up with Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand which allows you to stream movies. You can also access YouTube™, Picasa™, and other Internet sites from the special VIERA Cast™ screen. With the Wi-Fi system, you do not need to use a LAN cable to enjoy this exciting web content.

*Netflix unlimited membership required. Service on Viera Cast TV will be available summer 2010.

True to Cinema Picture Quality

Even with large capacity Blu-ray media, the great volume of master movie data cannot fully be saved onto a single disc. Master data must first be compressed to fit to the capacity of a disc, and the key to decode this compressed data faithfully to the original is to know what the master data was. Panasonic has a long history of research in image compression technologies and has authored many of the Blu-ray Disc movies at Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory working together with Holloywood filmmakers with understanding of their intention. By incorporating this accumulated knowledge, Panasonic Blu-ray Disc Players are able to reproduce movies faithful to the original. This provides true-to-cinema picture quality, enabling the reproduction of the nuances, touch, and atmosphere which the filmmakers intended.

PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus

PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is a high quality image-processing technology developed to precisely process each pixel of the Blu-ray Disc video signal in the vertical direction. It reproduces color data with twice the accuracy of conventional systems to keep colors faithful and sharp

New P4HD Enhanced Full HD Upsampling

With the new P4HD Enhanced full HD upsampling, the standard definition movies in DVD also approaches full HD quality. The picture is intelligently analyzed to have the best matching process done on each pixel.

Adaptive High Precision 4:4:4 More Vibrant, Smooth and Truthful Color Reproduction

The DMP-BDT100 reproduces the color signals in horizontal directions with higher resolution. Not only Full-HD movies in 1080p, but concert and documentary films saved in 1080i are now reproduced with greater details than ever before.

0.5 Second Quick Start Stress Free Ultra Fast Booting

The boot time from standby to power-on has been greatly reduced from prior models, allowing ultra fast 0.5 second booting. With this improvement, movies can now be enjoyed with less stress by less waiting time.

* With Quick Start on.

VIERA Link™ Eco Function Smart Energy Saving with VIERA Link™

The DMP-BDT100 excels in features such as the VIERA Link energy saving functions. Blu-ray Disc player automatically turns on/off depending on the TV status.

*Available for 2009 VIERA with HDAVI control 2 or above compatible products.

I have had numerious Panasonic products going as far back as tha early 70s. This player has allowed me and my family to enjoy our extensive DVD collection. All other players, to include exspensive products just could not make the cut. If you are the type of person who needs a player costing more than $700.00 thats OK, but you are truely missing a GEM in the BD80K. The value and cost that Panasonic works for is clear in this player. Thanks Panasonic

Quality machine with 2 drawbacks: Does not have Netflix and Viera Cast is disappointing. Needs to have a company like Netflx or true DNLA connectivity. Viera Cast has not been finished in years. Users can get more internet features on gaming machines and there are so many other alternatives to cable such as Netflix, Hulu, or PlayonTV. BD Live is great and the Blu-Ray features are excellent. I do not think I would ever consider a product with Viera Cast on it in the future. I purchased this product after reading an article that said Netflix was going to be added.

Freeze Problem

By

from Minneapolis, MN, USA

Pros

  • Inexpensive

Cons

  • Did not meet expectations

Comments about Panasonic Full HD 3D Blu-Ray Disc Player:

This unit would be OK if it didn't have the freezing problem that many have mentioned previously. I'd have no problem giving it a much better review if this issue was fixed. I long ago installed the latest Firmware, but that didn't resolve the issue. Maybe the problem is hardware related and can't be fixed by a Firmware upgrade?

Comments about Panasonic Full HD 3D Blu-Ray Disc Player:

I have had my blu ray player for over 2 years now and use it on a daily basis. It still works great! It has a compact design which fit into my entertainment unit with room to spare. It loads, reads, and plays discs very easily & the quality is good. I don't use the extra features because I only use it for discs so I can't attest how those work. The only drawbacks are occasionally it will not shut off & has to be unplugged to reboot, but works great again. I would also improve the design of the remote control because I've accidentally hit the wrong button because they're so close together. Overall, I'm very happy with my player and would recommend it for playing discs.

Disappointing Buy, Mr. Freeze is Warmer

Comments about Panasonic Full HD 3D Blu-Ray Disc Player:

This player had been with me for three years, but I had to replace it. It regularly froze while playing BDs or using the Netflix app. I called customer service within the warranty period only to get a factory reset as the solution. That never worked for longer than a week, no matter how many times I tried that. Only cutting the power would recover the unit. I thought its simplicity and functionality would have made it a solid Panasonic product, but I was wrong.

Comments about Panasonic Full HD 3D Blu-Ray Disc Player:

I thought this was a wise buying decision but I was wrong. To play a blue ray dvd you need to insert the dvd, wait for the system to lock up, unglug the unit (it will not turn off at this point), plug the unit back in and then you can watch a movie. To stream Netflix or Hulu Plus â€" good luck. 90% of the time the options for NetFlix or Hulu Plus (which came pre-loaded) are not available. In fact nothing is available except for the ‘Settings’ option. Some times you can unplug the unit and then the options for NetFlix or Hulu Plus will be there but do not count on it. If you would like to see what a poorly designed piece of technology looks like â€" then this is the waste of money for you. You can have. Really. It's out by the dumpster.

We found good reviews of this product and decided to purchase it based on low cost and good reviews. Our experience, however, was not good or consistent with those reviews. Quick lost of cons: -it freezes all the time, only option is to turn it off, wait, then turn it on again -a black box appears over half the screen and disappears again randomly -extremely slow response time -remote doesn't always work I wouldn't purchase again or recommend. The constant freezing of this unit is ridiculous.

Comments about Panasonic Full HD 3D Blu-Ray Disc Player:

I thought it was just me, until I read the other reviews. I finally decided to join the rest of the world and upgrade to HD ths past March and bought an HD TV and this Panasonic Blu Ray player with the intention of streaming netflix and getting rid of my dish service...after only a week I was having problems. I tried to return the Blu Ray but couldn't find the receipt. I googled the problem and found out a firmwarm update was needed- ok 1 for technology 0 for me... That did not resolve the issues of the picture going in/out while Netflix or a DVD was playing. Or the player being "frozen" to the point I have to unplug it and cannot use it again until the next day. This is ongoing issue. Especially frustrating when trying to watch a movie with the children or work out

This was my first smart blu ray DVD player and it acted up from the beginning but I tolerated it. 8 months later it finally went out on me. I tried everything from trouble shooting to get it to work again but I'm done trying and will throw it away today when I purchase a new one that isn't Panasonic.

I have had to power cycle the player on average of once a week. It's very slow to respond to remote commands. The Youtube channel freezes the player 25% of the time, and leaves the player running with no means to stop it. Same with Netflix. We use it mainly for Netflix, and I like the app interface, but the hardware issues make this a bad choice. I have a feeling it's all based on overheating, and boy, does this player get hot. Just save up the extra $50 and get a better player.
