The Canon Power Shot SX130SI is a very professional, high-end compact digital camera that offers a lot of the same features as a professional DSLR (digital lens single-reflex camera). It's very easy to carry around and it doesn't draw as much attention as a bulky, full-size Canon EOS Rebel (which is a great feature when you're on vacation or sitting around lots of strangers). The other things I really love about the Canon SX130SI is that it has image stabilization, it can take high-definition (HD) movie clips, it can take 28-mm wide angle shots, and it's extremely user friendly for both amateur and professional photographers. When you turn on the camera, its huge 3" LCD screen automatically tells you the purpose of every function on the camera and how to use them properly. You don't even have to read the camera's instruction manual, which is very cool. Although the camera has tiny control buttons, they are placed very conveantly for easy operation. I think it's the perfect camera for taking professional photographs of people and subjects in very calm environments. The Canon SX130SI also has a special "Positive Film" setting, which allows you to take pictures as though you were using 35mm film. Professional photographers know that 35mm film can capture more detailed, vivid colors in a photograph then a traditional digital camera. With the Canon SX130SI, you can take amazing pictures that look like they were captured by 35mm film. I use the "Positive Film" setting on my camera a lot and I absolutely love the results! The Canon SX130SI also has some very cool time delay (self-timer) options that are worth mentioning. First, you can set the camera's self-timer between 0 - 30 seconds and also set the number of pictures you want the camera to take automatically from 1 - 10 shots. Secondly, the camera has a Face Self-Timer that will only release the camera's shutter after it detects a new face in the lens. Thirdly, the camera has a Wink Self-Timer that will only release the camera's shutter after somebody winks at the lens. If the Wink Self-Timer is set, and there are no people in the shot, the camera will not start shooting until a person enters the shot and winks at the lens, which is perfect for happy couples or even James Bond. If you don't want to wink at the lens, you can set up the Canon SX130SI so that it will automatically take 1 - 10 pictures after someone smiles at the lens. You can do this without even having to set the shutter button on the camera. All you have to do is turn on the camera, set it on Smile Shooting Mode, and place the camera on a tripod or a flat and level surface. When someone enters the shot and smiles at the lens, the camera automatically starts shooting. When the person stops smiling, the camera stops taking pictures. If the person smiles again, the camera will take another picture (and so on) until the camera batteries are dead or the memory card becomes full. The possibilities for using the Smile Shooting Mode or the Wink Self-Timer are endless! The last cool feature I want to mention about the Canon SX130SI is its Miniture Effect shooting mode. The Miniture Effect takes a digital still picture of a object or person and then automatically blurs the top and bottom portions of the image to produce the effect of a miniture model. This is a fantastic feature that is really cool and fun to experiment with. Unfortunately, the Canon SX130SI is not waterproof, shock proof, animal proof, or even kid proof. You don't want to use it while taking pictures of a bear in the pouring rain and you don't want to give it to a 6-year-old child. Even Rambo wouldn't carry this camera with him on his next brutal military adventure, unless he's just having lunch at the White House. Rambo would probably be happier carrying the Canon Power Shot D10 into a war zone. The Canon D10 is waterproof, shock proof, snow proof, sand proof, and pretty much "combat proof" in many ways. The Canon SX130SI can not take pictures in RAW format. It can only take pictures in JPEG format. However, considering the lightweight and compact professional features of the camera, it really doesn't matter. There are a lot of great photo editing software programs that can transform all of your digital photographs into negatives (which is very similar to the RAW format) and then you can store the negative images on your computer. Overall, the Canon SX130SI is a camera can meet the needs of almost any photographer. It's worth every penny! I wouldn't trade my camera for any other digital camera in the world! I love my camera and I love the way Canon makes them!

This camera takes excellent images, better than the SX30IS I also purchased (Compared the images side-to-side: The 130 has truer color and less noise than the 30 which has too many MP in a sensor that small, but that's for another review). Unfortunately, Canon did away with a viewfinder on nearly all of their P&S. If this camera had a viewfinder, it would be perfect--portable, light, great zoom range, and great photographs. But without the viewfinder it's difficult to take images in low light without shake, and the large LCD + only 2 AA batteries means it goes through batteries quite quickly and without recourse. In previous models, the 1100 IS for example (a decent little camera for its price), I could switch to viewfinder when the batter was getting low to extend the shooting life. I travel a fair amount and I don't always trust the circuitry of the countries I visit to not blow out a rechargable battery, but I know I can get AA's anywhere in the world. Having AA's is a huge bonus and I love that Canon has kept some of the AA's in its arsenal, but in a big LCD without the viewfinder, it makes it a liability. Ultimately, I got too frustrated with the lack of viewfinder in a double-A and had to return the camera. Had it had that viewfinder, it would have been a sure-fire favorite. One other thing: the lens is a little slow, making it hard to get depth with a wide aperture. I understand the zoom length necessitates a higher f/, but the SX210 and 230 have smaller bodies, a longer zoom, and a faster lens.

Comments about Canon Black PowerShot 12.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

I have used many different cameras like this and I think this one is specifically nice to use. For people who want to go more advanced, there are manual modes like aprature and shutter speed priority which work pretty well. For beginners, the camera is also great because of the guides and good explanations that pop up. However, regular alkaline batteries don't cut it at all. All this this time I have owned the camera, I've used advanced lithium batteries but don't worry, they are not hard to find. Also, at first, the camera seems to be slightly heavy and bulky but you get used to it over time. One more note, I have dropped this camera off counters, on ship decks, and on asphalt many times and it has nicely survived them all.

Comments about Canon Black PowerShot 12.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

Ive had Canon Power Shots for several years .. good service. The short battery life is compensated by the fact that you can get Lithium AA batteries almost anywhere. BUT.. be careful.. easy to scratch lens and the battery door latch ( plastic) will easily break if the camera is dripped on its corner.. even from a few inches . No replacement and this will make the camera virtually useless.

Highlights 1: Decent image quality for this price range (I can tell Best In Class) Well controlled Chromatic Aberration, Purple infringement and very low distortion level. 2: Impressive 720p video quality with rich colors and detail and very clear sound. 3: Acceptable battery life if you use high capacity rechargable batteries (2500 mAh Ni-MH is the best for this camera) Cons 1: Very annoying vertical highlighted line in night video recording if the light source placed in the frame. 2: Low resolution LCD that you cant see any detail specially if you want to manual focus. 3: Very slow and noisy zoom function while recording video.

The left side of every picture taken is blurry beyond recognition, the right side is much clearer, I've changed settings, etc. to see if the picture would get clearer and perhaps it was the user error/problem, I've read the manual, changed settings and done all that I can to make the full picture crystal clear. I'm very disappointed with this camera, I have a ticket into Canon, we'll see if they stand behind their product. This is the first time I've had problems with Canon, generally the cameras have been excellent.

I'm glad I got this electronic device. I still can't believe I found a nice digital camera. I like that is packed with great features. My favorites 12x digital zoom, 28mm wide lens, 12.1 mega pixel, huge LCD, and video recording with great sound. The main reason I got this camera was mostly luck and the price.

I use the camera almost exclusively for my business of inspecting houses. I also do on occasion use it for leisure, shooting family, outdoors / nature photos. I have bought several camera over the years of all different brands in the same price range. The Canon has out performed all of them considerably. I am VERY hard on cameras, taking several hundred photos a day in all types of whether and conditions. So far the Canon is still going strong after a year and tens of thousands of photos. It's an all around great camera and a super value. I highly recommend the SX -130.

I use CHDK with the SX130 IS and develop images which are typically indistinguishable (when shot at ISO 80) from those from a DSLR. If you can still find this model in stores (it has since been replaced by the SX150 IS) grab it! One more thing - use "hybrid" (also known as "pre-charged") batteries in this camera and you will typically get 300 shots per charge.

I've been using this camea for 2 year now. When I first received it, I thought it was wonderful, but thats only because it was my first camera. I found the product very useful. The image quality is great and its very lightweight, but the battery life runs out in about 10 minutes with the camera being on. The zoom quality is terrible, whenever I zoom in it does not focus so I completely gave up on that. The only person I would recommend this to is someone who first experiencing with a camera, if not then I suggest a better Canon camera that would suit you. Have a good day.

6/9/12 - I've been using this camera for over a year now and have come to some pretty clear conclusions and what I would like in the next camera I buy. All of the features that are described on this website are clear and work as described except two items. Auto-focus under low light circumstances is better than other companies I've tried but with the camera on a fixed tripod and the band or players on stage, sometimes it tries to refocus and it takes approximately 1-3 seconds. For the the cost I think its better than the others but could be better. The sound it pics up is incredible for even loud places like bars or festivals. I've actually used the sound as another track for mixing when i needed to catch the audience perspective. The biggest complaint I have is the governed 10 continuous minutes of HD movie shooting. When I'm recording my kids plays, I have to ask them where I can start and stop the camera within 10 minutes so I don't miss parts. I have a 32G card inserted so I could easily go longer than that if the camera allowed. Also the battery life is about 15 minutes when shooting HD movies. I don't do it unless I use the power cord (not supplied). Also, the camera cannot switch from battery to AC without shutting down and restarting.
