This Refrigerator Water Filter is used in Whirlpool®, KitchenAid®, and Maytag® side-by-side refrigerators with filter access in the base grille. Simply turn the Refrigerator Water Filter 1/4 turn to remove and replace. While retaining beneficial fluoride, this NSF® Certified Refrigerator Water Filter reduces chlorine taste and odor, particulates (class II), lead, and mercury. The contaminants or other substances removed or reduced by this water filter are not necessarily in all users' water. Replacing this Refrigerator Water Filter every 6 months ensures clean, safe drinking water. Replaces 4396547, 4396163, 4392857, 4396919.

This filter is one of the easiest to replace once you get it started. Filter tends to need a pair of pliers to get started but otherwise easy to replace. I have a whirlpool fridge and it has a lousy location, on the bottom near the floor. But I went shopping at all the online retailers I could find alot of them and some have good prices but horrible shipping charges. This includes [@]. I found ABT to have the best overall prices and my filter is always in stock and if I forget to replace I get a reminder e-mail from ABT. I will return again and again. It's like finding a great fishing hole, you always want to return time and time again.George

Anyone who owns the Whirlpool side by side refrigerator for this model knows if you do not change the filter promptly it leaks water under the refrigerator. Short of getting a new refrigerator we make sure the filter is changed regularly. The filter works great just a poor design of the refrigerator.

Whirlpool water filter

Great product, only one thing that I would consider a problem would be the replacement part. The filter is easy to install, the current filter in the Refridgerator does not come out easy. you must apply some pressure to disengage it. In doing so you might damage the plastic holder that sits ontop of the filter. Becareful as you dont want to break this off and be stuck with a filter that wont come out of your Fridge!

Replaced the old filter easily. As soon as you disconnect the old filter, be prepared for some water to run out of it. I suggest using a couple of paper towels or a bowl.After installing the Whirlpool filter, I only needed to run a couple of pitchers of water through before the water was crystal clear.Abt had these quality Whirlpool replacement filters for a reasonable price. When I ordered this product, I was not sure it would fit my particular model of refrigerator, but it fit perfectly. I have not had the water analyzed for chemical properties, but it tastes good. Ordinarily, our water has a moderately unpleasant taste directly from the city, but this filter takes that out. I was able to save about 20% by purchasing here instead of my appliance dealer.

One caution - After the new filter is installed the water from the refrigerator door will not shut off until the filetr is full of water. Watch for spurting and uncontrolled water flow. Have a large container to catch the new water until it stops.

Did the job but...

I was a little apprehensive when I first opened the box and compared the shape of this filter to the one I was replacing. It inserted and locked in just fine. The problem was that when I went to use the water dispenser on the fridge, the dispenser would not shut off as it normally did and ended up leaking about half a glass of water on the floor before it stopped. I suspect that replacing the filter got air into the line and caused this problem. I wouldn't blame on the filter entirely but beware! Otherwise this did the job and saved me about ~$15 if I got it a my local store (rhymes with "Beers") The water tastes considerably better, well worth a little spilled water on the floor!

The filter came in it's original box, unopened. Extremely easy to install. My 9 year old daughter was eager to inform me on how she already knew how to uninstall the old one and install the new one. How's that for simple? We use it mostly for drinking water and ice. Also, we use it for anything else in the kitchen; cooking, making coffee and tea, etc. The water and ice taste great.

If you have a Whirlpool/KitchenAid refrigerator with one of these water dispensers, you are well-aware of using/replacing this filter. It does what it is supposed to do. However, if you have hard water, water drips from the dispenser will dry and leave a white residue, which is tough to wipe clean. We have a water softener, and this still happens. Aside from that, the filter is a filter! One last comment: Removing the old filter from the front base of the refrigerator is a real pain in the you-know-what. It is ALWAYS a struggle to twist the old filter, so that you can pull it out and replace it. Not fun at all. The manufacturer should correct this problem.

Product worked as described and install was painless. This is the first time we have changed the filter in the 1+ years since we purchased the Whirlpool fridge brand new. The filter replacement indicator indicated it needed to be changed out much earlier but there does not seem to be a difference in taste in the water even after a year of not replacing it.
