Panasonic Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera - DMCFZ40K

Powerful 24x Optical Zoom Hybrid Digital Compact Camera with HD Movie Recording

  • *35mm camera equivalent: 25-600mm

The DMC-FZ40 is a 14.1-megapixel hybrid digital compact camera that combines a powerful optical zoom and creative options including manual operation. The newly developed LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT lens in the DMC-FZ40 extends its optical zoom range from 25mm to 24x, 600mm equivalent.

The powerful 24x optical zoom* can increases its power to 32x equivalent with the Intelligent Zoom function taking advantage of the Intelligent Resolution technology maintaining the picture quality even using digital zoom. Combining Sonic Speed AF with a high-speed start-up gives the FZ40 the industry's fastest level of response which helps to catch even the most fleeting photo opportunities.

The manual control of FZ40 elevates the operability even higher with the incorporation of new jog dial. A focus button lets users change its settings quickly according to the shooting condition. Users can enjoy creative shooting not only in photo but also in movie, utilizing a host of options including Creative Movie mode and My Color mode. *Equivalent to 35mm camera:

25-600mm. 25mm Ultra Wide-Angle LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens with Powerful 24x Optical Zoom for Ultimate Versatility in Both Photo and Movie Recording

The FZ40 features a high-quality LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT 25mm ultra wide-angle lens with a 24x optical zoom(35mm camera equivalent:25-600mm). Comprising 14 elements in 10 groups, including 3 ED lenses and 2 aspherical lenses with 3 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit realizes the outstandingly compact body while passing Leica's stringent standards to deliver exceptional optical performance suppressing distortion at wide end and color bleeding at tele end. Thanks to the newly incorporated Intelligent Resolution technology, the Intelligent Zoom is available with the FZ40 which extends the zoom ratio by approx. 1.3x maintaining the picture quality even combining a digital zoom. This means the 24x optical can virtually extend to 32x equivalent. Furthermore, the Extra Optical Zoom function extends zoom power to 50.6x (at 3-megapixel resolution) by using the center part of the large CCD to bring subjects even closer.

Enjoy Easy Shooting of HD Movie in AVCHD Lite with Advanced iA(Intelligent Auto) Mode

The DMC-FZ40 is capable of recording high quality HD Movie in AVCHD Lite. The AVCHD Lite feature almost doubles the recording time in HD quality compared with the conventional Motion JPEG and excels in the compatibility with TV and other AV equipment. The picture quality is greatly enhanced thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology. The DMC-FZ40 also features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio.

  • *Continuous recording exceeding 2GB is not possible when recording motion JPEG. Remaining time for continuous recording is displayed on the screen.
  • *Use a card with SD Speed Class with "Class 4" or higher when recording motion pictures in [AVCHD Lite]. Also, use a card with SD Speed Class with "Class 6" or higher when recording motion pictures in [MOTION JPEG].
  • *SD Speed Class is the speed standard regarding continuous writing.

The Evolving iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode Makes Every Photo Blur-less

Panasonic incorporated the Intelligent Auto mode in pursuit of the ultimate ease of operation and the reduction of misshots. In the iA mode, the camera does all the work, leaving you free to compose shots and capture moments. Just press, aim and shoot.

The hand-shake component, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed, is recognized as a low-frequency vibration, for which the new POWER O.I.S. is particularly effective. This greatly improves the quality of shots taken with high zoom and at night or indoors where a flash cannot be used, or where the photographer doesn't want to use a flash because it would spoil the mood. It captures beautiful photos in situations that previously resulted in blurring.

The Face Recognition function remembers registered faces to give an appropriate AF/AE on the people while removing the unwanted red-eye. The Intelligent Scene Selector automatically selects whichever of 6 Scene modes - Macro, Portrait, Scenery, Night Portrait, Night Scenery and Sunset - that best suits the shooting situation.

Intuitive Manual Control and Creative Option

The excellent manual controllability is an advantage of DMC-FZ40, making it stand out against standard compact cameras. The newly adopted jog dial enhances the operability together with the focus button on the back of the camera.

In movie recording, the DMC-FZ40 goes further than simply recording HD movies. Apart from the movie recording capability of conventional digital compact cameras, the DMC-FZ40 also features a Creative Movie mode, which lets the user set the shutter speed and aperture manually to make even more impressive movies. Changing the shutter speed brings special effects to movies, which is especially suitable for shooting fast-moving subject. The ability to control the aperture is convenient when there are several subjects at different distances and it is desired to have each of them stand out.

My Color mode, which is popular in the LUMIX G Micro System cameras, is a special option that gives free reign to the user's creativity. With a variety of options including new Pin Hole, Film Grain, High Dynamic and High Dynamic B&W, the My Color mode makes it easier and more fun to create interesting, expressive images by shooting images with most intensive color, brightness and saturation parameters. The popular My Color mode is available also in movie recording giving the user a wider range of expressive possibilities to explore together with the Creative Movie mode.

Comments about Panasonic Black 14.1 Megapixel Digital Camera:

I waited for about 3 years to find the camera I wanted that was a P&S camera with good zoom, long exposure ability, and HD Video capabilities where you could zoom while recording. We have been very happy with this camera and the quality of photos and video. (The sound is impressive also, ie. we were recently at a concert and sitting right in front of the speakers. The audio I expected to be somewhat distorted due to the high volume and bass, however it was nice even volume.) My wife loves this camera so much that she says it's hers. There are a few things we have yet to figure out, but haven't taken the time to do it, like getting the memory to remember the my preferences on the 3 custom settings. I do wish that there was a firmware update that would include an intervalometer. I think this is the best camera I have owned and the quality of photo still continues to please. For the price, we consider this to be a great camera at a great value. As with most P&S cameras I've had experience with, it does have some difficulty focusing in situations where lighting may confuse the sensor (ie. in a concert, darker room but spotlights on subject.)

I found the movie button so even with the camera body I would miss it when wanting to shoot a movie. I carefully used 5 minute epoxy and put a small drop with a tooth pick right on the red depression of the button. As the epoxy started to dry I turned the camera upside down so the epoxy formed a small bulge. Now it is so easy to find the button. Love the camera, great movies, great pics, I can literally put the lens right next to an object and get a pic. Great videos of close up movies of mom feeding hummming bird babies in my atrium. See "startech" on "You tube" to see how great this camera works.A well built and easy to use camera, I especially like the grip, so easy to carry or hold the camera.

I have a more expensive camera then the FZ40, but when i head out the door for some footage or just to catch the sunrise or sunset I always find myself fetching for the lumix FZ40 becuase of the ease of use and fast set time and extremely fun camera to just have fun taking photos. night shots, day shots or just videos of friends and family, this compact is easy to use and fun, it also allow me full manual control over all the setting for those shots i don't want to miss. If it breaks or stops working for some reason, I would definitely buy another one just like it.

I like to go out and take photos to everything that I see. I want to learn how to use manual mode before I jump to a DSLR and this is a great camera for that purpose. It has an extensive user manual, but you will find many interesting features that improves your creativity and quality of your photos.

This is the successor to the FZ35, and offers nearly negligible improvement. The zoom range was increased slightly at both ends, but the wider angle is cropped when recording video.. The pixel density was increased at the expense of more noise in low-light. It adds a rear dial which is not adequate for fine adjustment in focus. The zoom mike and slight rearrangement of controls are the only other enhancements that I have noted. It is a fine camera by any account, as is it's predecessor the FZ35. If you really need something that this camera doesn't offer, you probably need to move up to a higher class of camera, such as a DSLR or pro-grade camcorder. But here is my wish list of things I might like to see in the next model. 1. The full wide-angle image while recording video. 2. Pixel count REDUCED, to reduce noise and processor load. I think 9:16 should be the native format, since it is the format of the best monitors and TV screens now. 1080 x 1920 with 4 subpixels, means that 829440 is all the pixels one really should need in this class of camera. 3. Manual-focus assist available while recording video. 4. A touch-sensitive lens ring. When in manual-focus mode, touching it activates the manual focus assist. When in automatic focus mode, it controls the zoom. 5. A manual focus assist which highlights the focal plane just like the camera does when playing back photos. 6. Customizable, variable zoom speed. 7. Able to take photos while recording video, with flash if I want it, and automatic removal of the flashed frame from the video. 8. Periodic saving of video while recording. While in creative movie mode, the shutter-release starts recording, or saves and starts a new file if it is already recording. The shutter-release never stops the recordingâ€"the movie button is used for stopping. 9. An option to have both the viewfinder and the LCD display simultaneously, or at very least, able to switch back and forth while recording video. 10. A customizable user menu, for quick access to the options I use most. 11. A lock for the diopter adjustment. 12. Time-lapse and stop-motion video recording. I love the camera as it is, and you won't be disappointed if you buy it. This is just a list of features that might be real improvements, rather than simply inflating the numbers with more pixels and more zoom, but without improving quality or usability.

I owned a DMCFZ18K for several years and really loved it. When my daughter asked for a good digital camera for her birthday, I jumped at the chance to give her my camera and purchase the DMC-FZ430K. The HD video and 24X zoom would give me everything I need in a camera. Also, the camera, like the FZ18K is loaded with features usually found in more expensive camaras. I often use my own settings rather than the A1 automatic settings. I especially like SCN. I use the SCN sunset for striking true colors. The CD instruction manual is 223 pages but provides much vital information. I print out pages that I think I will use often. I notice that after reading reviews of products, I often end up purchasing Panasonic. In addition to the cameras, I own a Panasonic TV, phones, electric shaver, and hair clippers. I don't go out of my way to buy Panasonic, except for the camera, it just seems to work out that there products are better.

Bought this for Christmas as a gift to the family. LOVE IT!!! Battery life is AMAZING!! Other cameras needed new batteries after a few flash photos. We took over 200 with ours and have yet to see the battery indicator even out of full range! I love the different modes, pinhole, black and white...they make for very interesting photos. Overall this is by far the BEST camera we've ever owned and we're fully enjoying it. All the controls are slightly intimidating at first but once you get used to them all you have to do is point and shoot.

After reading one review here that you can't get repplacement batteries, I was not going to buy this product. That is until I checked 2 places & both carried replacement batteries for this camera. Please do your own research & check things like this out. I'm in Canada & the batteries are easy to get.
