Great! Would like a tweak or two though...

******************************************************* Would like a new firmware update to...Read complete review

******************************************************* Would like a new firmware update to include the following two items: 1. Offer the user the ability to change the behavior of the Fn and the AE-L/AF-L buttons. I really don't like "press and hold" to activate or use. It should be press once to activate (similar to the Av/Tv button) and, to deactivate, either take the shot or press again. I own a DSLR and love using exposure lock. I simply hit the button once and then take my time to frame without an obligation to hold down the shutter in focus. Also, it would be cool to simply hit the Fn button once to enable zooming through the popular preset focal lengths for the rest of the day (love the presets by the way!). 2. I realize there's some logic for putting a cap on speed and aperture due to exposure limitations, but I would still like to have full control while in manual mode and choose say 1/4000 at any aperture setting I choose. Fix these two issues and it becomes a flawless kit! ****************************************************** For those not sure, the camera works as advertised. It really is an advanced P&S that behaves very much like an SLR. -Low light is unbelievable, even hand held. However some images do come out with yellow splotches. -I absolutely love the flexible focusing it has to offer. Manual focus is done right on this camera, so much so that I find myself wishing it were on my DSLR. Like any other P&S camera I've come across, you will have problems focusing in poor light or on flattened/un-detailed surfaces (like a plain wall). Also, focusing is difficult when pushed to the extremes of a focal length. Again, this is normal (every lens has its optimal distance between it and the subject that must be maintained for a sharp focus). In general, the AF assist lamp, the distance you keep yourself from the subject and the other focusing modes help you get it right. So far, I can't complain! -Thank God they added customizable settings! This camera would be a nightmare without them. The camera has a memory for each mode, as well as a My Menu that comes in quite handy thank you! -White Balance offers three user definable settings. Again, this was done right. Quick and easy for the user to meter and adjust. -The flash is awesome. -Navigation between menus and picture write times can be slow however. -This camera is exactly the right size and weight, and I love the attention to detail like, for instance, the neck strap it comes with (this is worth more than the folks at Nikon can imagine). A little warning for first time Nikon users, the menus will take some getting used to. To be honest, until I painfully took the time to thoroughly read through the manual (like twice), I wasn't sure I had made the right purchase. Things that I would've liked when purchasing a high-end travel mate camera: 1. I understand telescopic folding lenses make the camera compact when retracted, but they also make the camera susceptible to damage. Either guests, in the heat of excitement, hold the camera like a sandwich and force the lens motor when trying to see their photo, or it accidentally gets turned on in your camera bag. I would much prefer a fixed lens with all internal focusing (even if the trade off meant a lower focal distance). This is a travel camera for me, and even a fixed 35mm would've been fine. 2. While on the subject of lenses, I also don't care for the retractable lens cover. Again, it's a matter of time before someone puts a thumb through it and it stops retracting. A simple lens cap would've been better. 3. All metal body and weather sealing to protect against rain and the elements (something tells me the back panel is made of plastic but I could be wrong). 4. A slightly larger optical viewfinder. 5. Love the ND filter. I know this is pushing it, but, would also love a polarizer. In conclusion, this is Bauhaus quality. Love the retro-styling and superb functionality. I feel like a kid again, armed with a toy camera and ready to discover the world all over again...I'll be posting plenty of samples to be shot in Saint Lucia this January in the many popular photo forums found on the web!

This is my second one in less than a month. 500 shots and the lens protector blades stopped closing and opening completely.A common issue on that model. Fought with Nikon for replacement, the second one starts vibrating and never stop when trying to focus. What will I have to do to find one that works OK? No problem if I leave it in my gadget bag. Happens every day and unpredictable.

Good image quality and packed with features, disappointing responsivness

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

This camera is a portable, robust, and sleek. It is absolutely filled with options and settings to fool around with as well as professional features such as the PSAM modes. The image quality is decent with vibrant colors. 7.1x zoom is more that enough to satisfy anyone. HOWEVER! The entire thing is botched by a sluggish internal computer/firmware or whatever. Everything is quite slow: autofocus, write time, menu navigation, playback, etc. This was very disappointing. The version 1.2 firmware only helped a little bit. Some features are limited as well: only 720p video, 1.3 frame burst (can that even be called a burst?) and changing the ISO is very inconvenient, having to go into the slow, sluggish menu, and then twiddling dial. Not only is the system slow, but it is also glitchy. In the PSAM modes, the aperture and shutter speed dial menus are glitchy, appearing to scroll up when they are scrolling down. It is quite hard to explain but the overall effect of this is a confusing onscreen popup dial which covers 1/3 the screen. Nikon had the right idea but somehow messed it up with the firmware. Perhaps the 7800 is good.

Excellent value and quality.

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

I have only owned Nikons for five decades. I purchased the P7000 when it was first released because of its ability to take RAW/NEF images. Within the constraints of its lens it takes excellent quality images and it has way more features and functions than I will ever use. I am still learning about its many features and it is so handy to use. I process my images in Lightroom and Photoshop and I use onOne, Topaz and NIK software on my Macs. I am always pleased and I am often astonished with the results. I suppose I will upgrade to the newest version of the P7000 series some day - 1080 HD video and Wi-Fi would be nice - but I don't know if I will ever get a 'Big Boy' body/lens again.

Initially great. Too many problems as it has aged.

By

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

I purchased this camera to avoid hauling my dSLR everywhere I went. Based on the level of control, it was very good at what I wanted. However, within months the lens cover began to stick and still does to this day (common based on searches of prior reviews). You have to press the sliding portions down with your finger when powering up. Additionally, around one year of ownership, when the battery drops to below half charge, the camera has trouble focusing appropriately (I've had too many fuzzy pictures to count). I love the control this camera provided. Overall, however, I would not have purchased now that time has moved on and its functionality has dropped. This is my 4th (of 5) Nikon camera and the worst of the lot.

Inevitable lens cover problems

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

It's just a matter of time before this camera's lens cover will stop opening all the way. Search the internet reviews and discussion threads: It happens to everyone. Until Nikon admits that this is a manufacturer error and offers to fix the problem, I have to rate this otherwise great camera as "Poor."

good camera at night

By

from Anaheim, CA

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

I bought this camera because it looked like it would take good pictures in low lighting situations which none of my point and shoots seem to be able to handle. It arrived the day I was headed to a party at night so I took it along, I couldn't see anything without my glasses on so I just winged it and left it on auto and got some really nice shots. Imagine what pictures it could take if I could see what I was doing and had time to read the manual.

Needs more accurate viewfinder and in-camera HDR

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

No one can see the LCDs of digital cameras in bright light so people fly 'blind' as far as composition goes. Just because I'm using an optical viewfinder doesn't mean I don't care about the edges of my pictures. Also, so often the dynamic range is outside the abilities of D-Lighting controls. Same is true for my D7000. Nikon: put in in-camera HDR for the traveler so we can get both the bright cloudy backlighting sky and the Tetons correctly exposed in the same shot. If you'd done that I'd have been the only one of 43 on my tour to be able to take decent photos in difficult lighting.

nikon P7000 is a great camera for the beginner and a super backup camera for the pros

By

from Sint Maarten in the caribbean

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

Using the p7000 gives me the edge over most point and shoot cameras as it does not slow you down while shooting and the delay in focus is minimum unlike most point and shot cameras I would like to see a bit more accessories for this camera to augment the usefulness of the camera itself in the world of photography.

Wonderful Camera

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

So far I've been very impressed with this camera. I wanted a camera with full manual control and did quite a bit of research before finally settling on this one because it seemed to be just as good as its competitors, but considerably cheaper. I received it with firmware 1.1 already installed, so I don't know how slow it was before. It takes about 5 seconds to write a RAW file, which is the same as my sister's DSLR. With a class 10 memory card, the write speed was cut to 3 seconds. I don't notice a delay when I am shooting. I've found the menus very easy to use and I love all the dials, it's a pain to go racing through menus looking for important settings just before taking a shot and the dials on this camera fix that problem. The video seems adequate and I'm glad the camera doesn't have in-camera HDR because the quality usually isn't the best. The view finder is extremely important in sunny weather, I just have to remember that the last quarter of the picture is missing. It might have been nice to have a rotating LCD screen, but they break easily. The rotating screen on my friend's Canon broke very quickly. All I wanted was a camera that takes very good pictures and is easy to carry around. The Nikon P7000 more than fits the bill!

Great Camera but some defects

By

from Norway

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

This Camera is perfect to use when my bigger D80 is unpractical. It takes nice pictures and you have all the adjustments you need. The only problem iI can see (wich I hope Nikon will fix in the future) is that the camera lens cover (curtain) doesent allways open 100%. This problem doesent efect every owner but Ive got it and it is a Waranty case but still irritating. The conlusion is, buy it. its worth the money! I have stopped using the D80 because the P7000 is all you need.

Compact, But powerful P7000

By

from Kansas City, MO, USA

Comments about Nikon COOLPIX P7000 Black 10.1 Megapixels Digital Camera:

Full featured professional grade tool. If your a beginner just use the auto mode to get great shots. For more advanced shooters this camera really gives some great high quality images. I have enlarged to 16x20 with good results at ISO100. Up to ISO 400 enlargements to 11x14 are stunning. Firmware is alittle quirky and sometimes its like trying to coax a drunk into a taxicab for a ride home.... but once you learn how to get your bracketing and macro modes to work you'll get great results. The qaulity of the images you get out of this little jewel is well worth the effort to work around its issues. I went to a Media Professionals Seminar at the Nelson last night. Greg Gorman was the speaker and presented about 100 of his images. Anyhow, setting up on the stage taking time lapses of the crowd assembling at this Canon sponsored event... was you guessed it... a Nikon P7000. Must have been sort of embarrasing for Canon. Anyhow, this is a great little camera and I see SLR photo's that are not as good as what I get from this camera. Yes for magazine or poster size work its not up to that level but for most everyday street photography this baby rocks.
