If you're looking for a rough and tumble, easy to read, easy to hear, reasonably intuitive cell phone, this phone is for you. I was almost scared off after reading many of these reviews, but I'm glad I took the chance. I've owned this phone for over 3 mths now, and am completely satisfied. At 55, I appreciate the customizable features. I easily created a large legible display, selected a fairly loud and distinctive keypad sound, and moved the features I use most to the 4 position rocker switch, and customized the "shortcuts" menu to carry only the features I use. My previous phone was a Samsung, so the phone seems fairly intuitive to me. Because of the large external speaker, "hands free" use while driving is easy. The graphics are a quantum leap ahead of my previous phones, and besides their great functionality, are visually appealing. The phone is fairly large by todays standards, which I like. It feels good in your hand, and the key pads are large and easy to use. Battery life is long. I use my phone primarily for texting, and going a week between charges is not uncommon. Regular voice call use will shorten that to about half. Its operation has been glitch free so far. I bought the phone for it's ruggedness. I tend to break phones and so appreciated the tough outer shell, beefy hinge, and having the keys and display safely inside. The access panel for the battery and flash card has an o-ring seal and a tough, metal, coin twist latch that keeps the cover on and the battery in place. This phone goes on remote mtnbike rides and gets thrown in a sweaty jersey pocket with tools and keys and such, where it's likely to get roughed up a bit in a tumble, and I have complete confidence that it will provide communication for me when I need it.

The software for this phone is utterly useless. The provided CD just links you to the website. Even after downloading and installing the software my PC cannot find the drivers for it. Now I cannot even fully remove the software, and only half of the total data package for the recommended drivers can be removed. Bottom line is you won't be able to upload/download anything to or from your phone with your PC. Perhaps if you get an adapter for the memory card and remove the card each time you want to transfer something to or from the phone. Which is a pain in the neck. I'll be returning this phone before the 30 day period is up.

One tough mudder.
from Ohio, USA
Ive had this phone for years, beat it up, mistreated it, normal real life scenarios, heck the kids lost it in the pond and we had to call it to find it, seen and heard it under water, after pulling it out I answered it, worked fine dried it with my T shirt put it in my pocket and 4 years later it still works. Absolutely the toughest phone Ive ever seen.
I've had this phone for over a year now and I love it! Works great and very reliable. Battery life is awesome too!
Not as advertised
I picked out this phone as a birthday present. It has good write ups and so far I found these few problems. The phone was said to be open source. And it does answer calls on my service ( other than AT&T) and will do texting. Other than that it is a brick. If you don't have AT&T for service all the other capabilities are worthless. The PTT button I noticed is a big pain but I fixed that with a bit of Clear sealer around the edges. I have noticed that I have to re charge it almost every day though and will be purchasing a new battery for it. Hopefully that will solve that problem. I do like the feel of the phone. Being thicker and easier to handle. the Speaker works very well. It's like Getting a quote from an Insurance company. They say OPEN SOURCE But only part of it is open. Samsung really needs to make a phone like this that will actually work on all GSM systems completely. Haven't thrown it at anything yet but there is still time .
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
The Rugby II has good features but

The Samung Rugby II has many good features that are easy to use however the voice dial is cumbersome to use. It renders this function almost useless. Good rugged phone ,good battery life, and good features.
It can take the Sea

I'm impressed by how waterproof the phone is. Twice I been into the Ocean with the phone in my pocket. Both times I thought it was a goner but it continued working. Complaints are screen can't be seen in bright sunlight and I have poor reception off shore which I feel that's more a problem of my service provider.
This is a good basic phone.

This phone is a good value for basic phone use. It is durable and reliable. The only problem was that difficulty hearing on it. I now have a Samsung smart phone which I love, although it costs much more for the phone and service.
I like the phone a lot but it is difficult to text because of the phone design with the keyboard. The phone is durable, great reception, easy to operate, and very durable. I just hate trying to text because it takes so long!!!
Sturdey and better than most.
from Tamaqua Pa
GOod phone but I wish it had the same power as my Tundra. Any other phones would be junk in a week or two with me.. Good size not bad to use.

I have never had a cell phone I love as much as the Samsung Rugby II. I have a problem with hearing but that's no problem with the Rugby. I love the alarm option. If you're low on power, you can turn your cell phone off and the alarm feature isn't affected...it still wakes you at the time you designate. Fantastic feature! Would highly recommend this make / model over the smart phones (which I've also had).
